You definitely need something to drink with it. Coffee or milk is my preference.

i was more commenting on the appearance of the cake and asking my good friend gramps a question than looking for a snarky response from a dwarf.

but to answer your question i could get by with some danish or pies without a drink if none were available, but this thing appears to be something that would just suck every last bit of saliva from your mouth. like there'd just be no use in even trying.

If I had to compare it to anything. Its basically an Italian version of a pound cake with a bit more flavor. OH and powder sugar. On some types. Italians can't make anything without powder sugar.

Not a fan. My Grams used to make them for every holiday. Can still smell them cooking though.

My Mom makes them for Christmas. Not nearly as dry as bakery made. She also makes a ricotta lemon cookie that is unreal. So good.

Now for the important question. Homemade raviolis?

i am slowly losing touch with the italian food from my childhood because my paternal grandmother died a few years ago and my mother (who wasn't italian, but was a hell of an italian cook) is also gone.

i also only associate with my mother's side of the family at this point and they are irish. i do however still have my sister who hosts christmas eve and does a few of the italian things. it helps that she married a guy named giordano too.

but yeah, i don't get things like homemade raviolis anymore.

we had christmas eve at our house when i was a kid and my mother was just amazing. i don't remember what half of the stuff was called and i probably can't pronounce it anyway. but i'll always remember what it tasted like.

Very true. Even with the recipe, no one can ever create the same flavors as the originals. All good cooks keep a little something to themselves.

A little background. Almost all of my Greek uncles married Italian women. So I have this insanely huge extended family. There were several in the mix who made those. Not a single one ever was as good as they look. Sucks describes them quite well.
