Maybe in the past they were. Now they're mainly a political tool. Afghanistan has little to do with our freedom of speech. I don't approve of the war at all and I find it ridiculous that we were upset with the Soviets just 25 years ago or so for fighting with the exact same people.

I also don't like having a constant professional standing army and I think it would be great if like non-nuclear proliferation treaties we had non-military proliferation treaties.

I think you misunderstand the difference between afghani's and extremists. Most Afghani's just want to be left alone like anyone...and that excludes the extremely religious. The majority of unorthodox afghani want their children to have an opportunity to grow and learn and CDN troops are doing there best to provide hospitals, schools and a facsimile of all the things we blatantly take for granted..

Unfortunately for the Afghani people their country has become a staging ground for extremists. I do agree that by being there we are presenting a target and an opportunity for fundamentalists to strike out but at the end of the day no one, no where deserves to be raped or minimized because of their sex or beliefs...and yes we have a responsibility world wide to enforce this. You can't enjoy the fruit without having to take the time to pick it.

If a nation is defending it's own soil, dropping bombs seems to be somewhat counterproductive. Any other nation (and obviously we're into theoretical territory here) that wants to occupy us would need ground troops to do so. Bombs are large and general, ground troops are precise and maneuverable.

I like the idea of Utopia too but my practical and pessimistic side tells me it's just not going to happen. We may desire peace but too many other factions have no desire for it at all. Decommissioning our army completely would be like an invitation for anyone to come in and rape our country....well, more than they already do anyways.

This is simply not true. American history is filled with incursions right from their beginnings in the late 1700s... and this has little to do with the blatant abuse of minorities of a population by the majority in countries like Afghanistan...and why it is important that we fight on their behalf.

I think you're not getting my argument which is that we have no business interfering with the affairs of others just as nobody had any business messing with our affairs as we developed as a nation. It never works and it always causes animosity.
