- You can't have a country without a strong economy. You can, these days, have a country without a massive military industrial complex. Ask Japan who only has a defense force and refuses to intervene in anyone's affairs.

- We can't afford to police the world and we have no right to.

- You can't just roll in to a nation that is centuries behind and expect to do anything but permanent harm and cause permanent ill-will.

Your position:

- Let's go get them and show them how to live. We can definitely police the world. It's realistic and we can afford it.

- Massive debt is not such a big problem. We can continue to fix up the rest of the planet and drag them unnaturally into the 21st century.

- Let's fight "them" over there instead of here. Because they were coming on their camels to get us.


So please, let's not pretend the Taliban and the Afghanis are a hair's width away from taking over the planet like Hitler was. WW2 was the last war that was actually worth fighting and it was against an actual nation that was aggresively taking over other nations.

No I've never called you naive, nice twisting to suit though. You've misread my position and simplified it to suit your argument.

I'm indifferent to Islam as a faith and believe that like any of the major religions, the vast majority are not into forcing their ideologies down other peoples throats. I lived in the Middle East for a long time and found the vast majority of people to be kind, generous and welcoming. Its the small minority of fanatics that are worrisome. Forcing views on other people is what I'm talking about here...and they may not be riding camels over here to invade but they sure as hell did a good job riding airplanes over.

If the pursuit of providing these people with basic infrastructure and education to make their own choices is a bad thing then this is one fuct up planet...and why wait for another Hitler like regime to come into place.

I'm suggesting that these people require an infrastructure that will allow them the basic human rights: freedom from oppression, the right to education, healthcare and the tools to create a benevolent society. I will maintain that as a 'have all' society', we have an obligation to help out where we can. I agree with you that Africa requires a lot of help....the US alone produces enough basic foods to feed the world a few times over...the waste alone in our society could do the job. The de-bureaucratization of many of the Aid agencies would go a long way to making it a more economically feasible effort.

To suggest that we can't help all countries, and therefore shouldn't help any does strike me as more than a little isolationist.

I also don't like the idea that a nuclear capable country like Pakistan has become a staging ground for the implementation of a radical ideology. If by not doing anything, we allow this situation to escalate to a point that it becomes comparable to the Nazis, aren't we just being ignorant to the lessons that WW2 taught us?
