Blazing Saddles - jtswinehart
Any racism is Blazing Saddles is intentionally ironic. It's making fun of racism.
The subtext of Shrek is how much the rich, white, elite hate the dirty, white working class, and how the two sides find common ground in their annoyance with minorities, who are uniformly portrayed as weak cowards.
The derision in Shrek's voice every time he says 'donkey' is absurd, almost like he wants to call him n-word. And that scene where the Donkey gets his wish and turns into a big white horse? If you put it in slo-mo, you can actually pinpoint the exact second Eddie Murphy's integrity disintegrates. |

Gotta agree that Blazing Saddles plays more on laughing at racism than being racist itself, just the scene where every time Gabby Johnson goes to say "he's a n..." it's all he gets out. Frikkin' hilarious movie, and one I have in my library (along with Young Frankenstein). Never thought of Shrek as racist, but put that way I guess it could be considered so. Elitist maybe. Still funny as hell. |
