Well, they aren't, so bikers have to take the sidewalk from time to time... I've had a bus force me right off the road... while I was on a bike lane, I've had cars edge me off on the side of the road, taxi drivers cut me off, idiots opening their doors without looking-forcing me to swerve blindly into traffic, cars turning without looking where they're going... it's far more dangerous for bikers to share the road with drivers than for pedestrians to share the sidewalk with bikers. It's also a hell of a lot easier for a pedestrian to step out of the way of a bike than it is for a bike to get out of a dangerous situation on the road.

To get out of a bad situation, sure. But no biker should ride permanently on the sidewalk. And yeah, you get the jerks who don't look where they're going or are just mindless drivers, and you get doored from time to time... it kind of sucks but you have to be hyper vigilant... even in a town with tons of bike lanes.

I bike where it's less crowded... if the sidewalk is empty, or close to it, I'm on it... especially if the street is crowded
