Not to sound like a broken record but it is clear player do not want to sign in Montreal as UFA's. Look at recent years for evidence. So to get 1st line players Gainey needs to make trades etc...
So obviously Gainey has been looking to make a deal. All you delusional Habs fans wanted Vinny. Do you have any idea what that would have cost? There is a reason why Gainey did not pull the trigger. I mean it would have cost any package of Higgins, Plekanec, Pacioretty, Markov, Subban, McDanagh, draft picks etc. It would have totally crushed the roster...
With this Gomez deal all you lose off the roster is Higgins. And maybe Gainey can get lucky and sign someone like a Gionta, or Samlsson from Detroit etc...And then he can resign maybe Kovalev or Tangauy...
This was a good move by Gainey in my mind. Like I said before, the only way to upgrade the team is through trade bc top guys always snub the Habs even when good offers are made, ala Briere...And all of you complaining about McDanagh. The kid is a prospect thats it. He is not a blue chipper that you know is gonna pan out. It is a coin flip and fact is he has taken steps back from what I have read. If he does pan out it will not be for like 3 seasons. Would you have been willing to deal with the roster the way it is, not sign any UFA's and wait for McDanagh in 3 years and lose Higgins eventually anyways...
Nothing makes you Habs fans happy, even a deal that instantly upgrades your roster!...You complain about the cap hit but they have the money to spend it on him, and have enough young guys to still have space available to sign a RFA like Kovalev or try to make a splash but inticing someone like Hossa to come play with a top play maker like Gomez. I just do not get you Habs fans at all...You cry that Gainey has not done anything, he finally does, and you cry like babies, even when the deal benefits your team. Thank God for you Habs fans, because it gives us other fans something to laugh at when our teams bounce out in the playoffs or miss the playoffs. - Racki21

Has all the justifying the trade sunk in yet? I see a lot of people calling Macdonagh not even a sure hit all of a sudden. Saying he hasn't come along as hoped, how long has he been used in the argument of prospect pools between the Habs and Leafs?
Pretty bad trade, but you never know, Gomez might tear it up in a new market. The crappy thing is, the new market is the hardest to play in. - weirdoh
There is a reason why in the Vinny discussions TB wanted Subban and not McDanagh. It is bc Subban has clearly surpassed him. |

WHAT? You have to be joking?
Destroying what team? The team that barely made the playoffs only to get their asses handed to them by a much better, and way more SKILLED hockey club.
What Gainey is doing is improving this team, and to do that it gets costly. We lost a D prospect, who cares. We have enough of them.
We have a better #1 C then we have had in years people. IN YEARS!
Give it a rest people. Gainey is going to fix this team up. I like the acquisition. If we are going to compete it'll be with skilled forwards. And yes he is expensive, but not as much as Vinny would have been and we would have lost a hell of alot more prospects.
We're better with Gomez as our #1 compared to any of our C's from last year. SO enough with this bashing Gainey stuff. HE is doing a fine job now. Keep improving the team Bob, I support you! - itsallfalse

We overrate our prospects, same as you guys.
Come on we all saw McD at the WJC, hes nothing special. mediocre size, very mediocre offensively, pretty good defensively. But hockeysfuture has him as our top prospect so hes awesome |

I guess it's all in who you ask. All I was saying was how all of a sudden there's a big push on that he's not the top prospect anymore. |

Why we never...... Don't feel bad, luckily Burke hasn't done anything stupid. Sure he got ripped for doing nothing, but I guess it's better than trading away Schenn or something like that. |

Maybe, if we sign a snipper like Gaborik to play with Gomez, it could be a good number 1 line.
Add Tanguay to that and we're in business... |

Gainey said something in his last interview about one or two trades possibly being completed today. That would give us more salary by removing some current players from the books. |

I was shocked when I saw the deal. Actually, pissed is a better description.
But then I got to thinking. At this exact moment, who obtained the better player in the deal? We did, hands down. The future will pass judgment on Higgins and McDonaugh. We will also see if the Rangers gave up too soon on their players.
We have been criticizing Bob for seemingly sitting on his ass and he pulls this one out of the blue. The cap hit sucks but we obtained a really good centreman, who is an upgrade over Koivu, Pleks, Lapierre and yes, even Metro.
The night is not over and according to Boivin, we are spending to close to the cap so let the good times roll.
P.S. I promise to wait until 2:00 p.m. before torching Gainey's Hummer. |
