You're a Tampa fan, so you must be stupid naturally. You came into a Habs blog and posted an idiotic comment that ended with "Enjoy Mr. Gomez". As stated by you, which in turn makes it a shot at the Habs. Maybe you should back a couple of pages and reread your post and then you'll understand. And no, there are no apologies on my end for you to accept.

Sorry where does my loyalty to a sports team play into my genetics? But I won't continue to argue with you, I understand on a dark day in Montreal that you have alot of emotions.

Enjoy Mr. Gomez.

I can't imagine there are any Montreal fans at all that are happy with this deal...

Now that Gainey has overpaid for a second line center, I wonder if he will go get a #1 center, since it is what we needed in the first place?

Gainey really should be fired. Gomez production/contract isn't worth Higgins alone, never mind the fact we threw in mcdonagh.

Bob must go.

I was shocked when I saw the deal. Actually, pissed is a better description.

But then I got to thinking. At this exact moment, who obtained the better player in the deal? We did, hands down. The future will pass judgment on Higgins and McDonaugh. We will also see if the Rangers gave up too soon on their players.

We have been criticizing Bob for seemingly sitting on his ass and he pulls this one out of the blue. The cap hit sucks but we obtained a really good centreman, who is an upgrade over Koivu, Pleks, Lapierre and yes, even Metro.

The night is not over and according to Boivin, we are spending to close to the cap so let the good times roll.

P.S. I promise to wait until 2:00 p.m. before torching Gainey's Hummer.

I think I may agree with you. Shocked. Pissed. All of those things. But who knows what McD will be? Seems we got all we could out of Higgins, so like Ryder and Streit and Ribeiro, let him flourish elsewhere. Valentenko didn't want to play for the Habs, so no loss there. Janek? hehehehehe!!! I say, let's wait and see.

The only thing that blows about this deal is the cap hit. Gomez is an upgrade to last year's centres.

Is it great? No.
Is Bob done? No.
How do I know? His Hummer isn't burning.

Straight up Higgins for Gomez it's a great trade. We get something we need, not tall sure but strong and with hustle and a boat load of points, for something we don't really need.

The McDonagh part is what's confusing but I guess the organization wasn't pleased with his developement and hae decided Subban Weber and Fischer are the prospects to spend time and resources on.

Show of hands: How many have seen McDonaugh play since his lack luster performance at the WJC? I'll try to count them among the thousands of crickets that are about to start chirping.

Perhaps. But it could have been worse - we could have gotten a slow, filthy, washed up defenseman.
Also, and I am sure I speak for most, it's umlikely we care much about what you think. I know, I know, you're just here to talk hockey.

Hey now. I'm going to have to ask you to please respect the fact that after any trade or signing of any kind in Montreal there is the customary 24 hours of self mutilation and mass suicide. Please respect tradition. All will be back to normal tomorrow.

I think we will need more than 24 hours. We're spending to the cap and have like a gizzillion dollars in space. This must be what Yan feels like when he walks through his poppy fields.

At first, I hated it!!! The more I think about it, not that bad!!!
The more i was thinking about it, Lecav would have a bigger impact but that contract was for another 11 years while this is 5 years for basically the same cap hit!!! Is he overpaid, yes! But unfortunately, this is the only way to get quality players here!!!
The way i look at it is, is the team now better at the C position which was their biggest need or worse??? Better and who else could they have gotten??? In the end, I think he is a Jacques Martin type player, plays both ends of the ice!!!
Funnily enough, the french media seem to like it!!! I thought they would crucify BG!!! As fpr the fans, they either hate it and want to see BG go or are happy that they finally a quality C who happened to have a below average season last year!!!
I'll wait for the season to make my judgement, till then, I'll remain impartial!
They just said on RIS that Gainey probably has another trade coming!!!

In a cap world players are not measured exclusively by their talent, but also by the dollar value that they represent against the cap. Gomez at 7.5 is not nearly as valuable as Higgins at the 2.5 that he's gonna get. Nevermind that we threw in Mcdonough who at 22 still has a chance to develop into a solid NHL d-man. If this were a beer league and the guys played for free I would agree with you...we won this trade. Unfortunately in a salary cap league this deal is an absolute ass ramming.

I guess I am going against the general feeling here in that I like this deal for a number of reasons.

1. Gomez is the best center we have had in Montreal in a long time.. no disrespect to Koivu, but Gomez is an impact player, has won 2 Stanley Cups, is an excellent penalty killer with great speed who can score and make plays. And he is gritty and tough. He brings a missing dimension to the Habs and we can build around him.

2. Higgins was pegged as probably a third line winger and maybe will have a career best 30 goal season. But overall... Gomez is an elite player and Higgins is a good player.

3. It would have been nice to sit back and wait for McDonough and Valentenko to develop and maybe play in the NHL someday... two big what ifs. Both were far from the NHL and with Subban, Webber and O'Byrne all developing at faster pace... they were expendable assets which had to be included as there is no way the Rangers would ever trade Gomez for Higgins straight up.

4. Cap hit... with Koivu more than likely gone, and Lang probably finished, we replace $9.5M in two aging vets with a 29 year old signed for 5 years at $7.35M. It is the price to bring in a top calibre, all-round center.

A good trade for the Habs. We will be a better team next year because of this trade... keep going Bob.. we need to sign several more character players and add a bit more size and grit and we may actually have a chance at competing next year in the playoffs.

I don't think that it is that bad but apparently, Bob has another deal done or close to it. Should be interesting.
