DD calm down.
McDonaugh was not impressing very much, and he might never pan out. Need I remind you of Josef Balij?
The Rangs probably wanted either Fischer of McD and the Habs are higher on Fischer - Connor603
i'm missing something then. i admit, i'm a stupid hockey fan and i know nothing about the sport. that is the only explanation.
neither McDonagh not Fisher should have EVER been a part of the equation. i don't get it. don't you people understand that we did NY a favour?? and in doing so, we not only gave them Higgins, but one of our top prospects.
i don't care if McDonagh was not impressing in the NCAA.
you don't just deal your top prospects for second liners on superstar contracts. this is an irresponsible trade and proves one thing: this organization has replaced Toronto as the club most hell bent on securing that 8th and final playoff seed year in and year out. that is our goal. nothing more. |

I think the problem is that every GM knew that the habs needed a bonafide center and were therefore asking for ridiculous return for them. The only option was to take on a problem that another team had (read Briere or Gomez).
Seriously, I like Gomez - he's a 2 way center with speed who thrives in a defensive system, which is what we're gonna get for the foreseeable future. His contract is @$$ but we can absorb it with the space we have and the numerous entry level contracts we'll have on the team.
I just like that we didn't give up markov+ to get the center we desperately needed. |

You people are crazy. Gomez's cap hit is $7.3 and Vinny's is $7.7. Vinny is way way better. Gainey is a loser. I cannot believe he made this trade. Gainey helped NY improve the Cap situation which will help them get Komisarek or whomever. Clearly Gainey panicked when he realized he could not acquire Vinny. Vinny will never be a Hab. Sinced we overpaid for Gomez (a piece of crap) overpaying for Vinny would of been better. - Champ
agree. would have been better off with Jokinen out of Calgary.

yep, we can absorb the contract, at the expense of other players who might actually deserve that money. and great, we landed a bonafide undersized second-line centre. exactly what we've been missing. Gomez is everything this organization has not lacked-- a second-tier playmaker. |

Our FAs don't even want to resign here due to the fisbowl existence of being a habs player. We can throw money at players and they won't come here. WE offered both Gomez and Briere equivalent contracts 2 years ago and they didn't want to come here. I can't blame em - terrible winters, hounded by the press and the taxes shave an additional 10% off their paycheck. |

oh no? like Koivu, Kovalev, Tanguay? the only one who didn't wanna come back is Komisarek. i can't believe people think of Gomez a top centre. i just can't believe it. he is a slight notch above Koivu. same size, not as gritty. makes twice as much for the next 67 years.
my issue is not with Gomez as a player. he's fine. these are my issues:
A) what we gave up to HELP the Rangers, one of our direct competitors
B) Gomez's ABSURD contract
C) he is exactly what we haven't lacked over the past decade: an undersized second-line centre
D) he could not be less interested in playing here
E) why not wait to see if you can get anything based in the UFA market? were 6 other teams in the bidding? the timing of this deal stinks.
whatever, i've made my feelings on this deal known. i think it's a joke. if this was the only move available, i'd have much preferred a full-blown youth movement. |

I must admit I agree with you there. This Gomez move will most likely just make us stay in the 7th-10th position of the conference which ain't a pretty place to be. Perhaps BG has something up his sleeve, I have my fingers crossed, but I'm not expecting anything groundreaking. |

i doubt it. Gomez takes up most of the extra cash we had to spend.
we can't make anymore trades, not after unloding Higgins and McDonagh. just can't afford another hit to our youth. |

The only thing i can see, that would have made Gainey do this deal would be, that Sather informed Gainey that he was going to offer Higgins a contract, that Gainey didn't want to match, but if that is the case just take the picks, they would have to be better then losing another d prospect for the mexican midget.
We are going to lose Komi, it would have been nice to give Mcdo a shot at the big club, but no we are stuck with OB playing with Markov.
I don't get this deal, I don't know why he would trade for that contract. Seriously Koivu is better for half the friggen price. Hell Jokinen would have been better and maybe we could have gotten some real D back in return aswell for those prospects.
I just can't see myself cheering for Gomez, but i guess it is better then briere. |

funny, 'cause we all made fun of briere. yet he's a more dynamic player than Gomez who would NEVER have come at the expense of Higgins and McDonagh.
earlier today, i mentioned asset management.
how's this for you....
2001 first rounder: Komisarek, gone UFA 2009
2002 first rounder: Higgins, gone in Gomez trade 2009
2007 first rounder: McDonagh gone in Gomez trade 2009
2008 first rounder: traded for Tanguay in 2008, who leaves as UFA in 2009
what have we to show?
Scott Gomez and Tom Pyatt.
outstanding. but please, tell me what a wonderful GM Bob Gainey is. |

Would of rather had that koivu guy out of Montreal.
This trade is stupid for a few reasons.
1. It isn't much of an upgrade over koivu
2. Koivu bleeds for Montreal and would of signed for 4.5-5
3. Signing Koivu would of left us with Higgins still. Higgins upside isn't far off from Gomez
4. You don't give up top prospects when your helping a team rid a bad contract
5. Koivu + Higgins >>>>>>> Gomez
Gainey should be let go, before does anything else

Honestly, I've been thinking about this and, quite frankly, the deal isn't that bad.
Gomez's contract is absolutely horrible, I admit. But the player for player deal is allright.
And guess what? I'm not the one paying for his contract. |

Could be worse. We could have put a package together for Heatley on to have him give us the finger like he's doing to Edmonton. Did I understand correctly that he refused to waive his NTC once this week and that Murray accepted a second deal with Edmonton? |

* starts crying the Lecavalier wont get traded to habs * - Juliefan4life
As retarded as this trade might be ( starting to justify it)
I can't believe TBAY declined the same offer PLUS Gorges and Plekanecs.
Seriously, it is pretty apparent BG was willing to shell out big time to obtain Vinny...
I still can't quite grasp the salary of Gomez. He seems to have a laissez faire attitude sometimes..... When comparing other salaries in the League we got bones hard for Gomez. You could have signed almost any player in the FA pool at 7.3 mil.
And why would BG go all crazy saying we need that BIG talented center...and then SETTLE for Gomez?
I'm going on gut instinct in believing that Martin had his say in this.
Expect Hossa to be a Hab. Trevor Timmons found him, Pierre Gauthier selected him and Martin developed him. There goes another 7.5 mil.. That's 15 mil out of 34.5 mil.....
With Komi defnitely walking, our D will be very small and soft. Let's hope O'byrne
has a breakout season.
This trade made me drink 3/4 of a 26 of Brokers Gin. Seriously. Been a while since I got that fcuked up. Argued all night long with my 2 homo neighboors about this trade. At least Gomez is "cute", And looks "hot"........
Happy Canada day gents!
