Eric Engels: Scott Gomez, A Montreal Canadien - EricEngels
The Canadiens acquired centre Scott Gomez, winger Tom Pyatt and defenceman Mike Busto from the New York Rangers in exchange for winger Chris Higgins and defencemen Doug Janik, Ryan McDonagh and Pavel Valentenko.
Absolutely terrible, what is Gainey doing?
How do they lose McDonagh in a deal fro Gomez? He's a cap anchor! |

Do you know anything about the NHL? It's a bad trade and a salary dump by the rangers.
I'm surprised your blogger hasn't commented iunless I missed it? - rune_74

Any Habs fan who is even remotely satisfied with this deal must be dellusional!! Gomez has the WORST contract in the league! 8 MILLION!
Good LORD. If toronto had done this, we would have never heard the end of it.
I had been hoping that Sather would be left looking like an idiot for those contracts, but Gainey just let him off the hook!? - mccraig
That's because Toronto has been handing out garbage contract sfor years, in case you've forgotten and made many awful trades. They finally pulled away from all that, good for you guys, finally. |

With all due respect, are you stoned? - weirdoh
Confused and about to get stone. This news as hit me... i didnt expect Gomez as a Habs.
Salary aside, I think Gomez is an upgrade over the squad we've had in the recent years. Gomez is a quality play maker. Kovalev will surely enjoy playing with him.... i wonder if Gainey realizes that we now need a quality sniper ? |

Wow you guys are fu+king idots, female dog two years ago when he didnt get him or dury or berie and yes it was the same money. So he now trades for him and theres the female dogn again. Your like a old lady.
I like higgins but the the word is he wasnt taken the offer and looking to go to abritration.
A prospect is just that till hes proven in the nhl, wasnt shown that his time was coming any time soon so lets see if its greener on the other side for him.
Scott is the type of guy that will be a good leader, learned from some of the best in NJ and will get back to that type of player again now that hes out of that mess in NY.
Its one day away from the flood gates and you idiots thinks its over.
Heres an idea, if you want a french Canadian super star go watch tampa, there in need of fans big time. |

I just don't know what to say, worst trade I've seen from habs since ribeiro-ninimaa.
Higgins is gonna be awesome in a defensive-agressive style team. Can't wait to see him with Callahan and Dubinsky. Mcdonaugh was close to our #1 prospect. What do we gain ??? A good OVERPAID center who'll struggle because he has no quality wingers.
If Komisarek gets traded, I dont even know why I'd root for the canadiens. - jdacosta
Well, you can start cheering for them again, because I am pretty damn sure Komi is NOT getting traded. |

when i first heard about the Gomez-for-Higgins thing, i was livid. i come home to find out Bob included Ryan McDonagh in the deal and got back 2 B- at best prospect. so not only did we take on an $8-million second-line centre and hand over a 3-time 20-goal scoring 25-year-old winger, but we also hand over arguably the best prospect in our system?
please, someone tell i am missing something. i have to be. did McDoagh get run over by a truck and no one knows yet?
this trade alone is a fireable offense. i have no words. i just can't believe this. i am embarrassed for Bob Gainey at this point. - DoubleDown
hey, join my confusion. I dont mind the player named Gomez... i'm just not sure as we speak if we are gettin' it in the hershey highway or if we are planning some riots for next spring.... |

God I would laugh if Gainey signs the Sedins tomorrow and Gomez ends up our 2nd center. Yes he is overpaid, but we had to get a center and no UFAs are as good as him except Henrik Sedin. Which is still a possibility. The cap is not going down and probably up in a few years. We had to have something to show to attrack UFAs tomorrow. A good winger will be more interested now instead of Plek as our best to offer.
Please please please please!!! - Habs Rule
I hope you're right. If he gets the twins tomorrow I will probably feel better.
But am I to undertand that making this trade is what is suddenly going to make UFA's want to play in Mtl? Really? |

Dont you Habs fans get it yet? Nobody wants to sign with Montreal as UFA's! It has been so evident in recent years yet for some reason you people just do not see it! Gainey has to make trades to bring decent players in because no person that has a choice wants to go to Montreal!...
So with that being said Gainey had to do something and he did just that. He took a roster player (Higgins) and dealt him for an upgrade of Gomez. Giving up McDonaugh is nothing more than a 50/50 chance that the kid turns out. I have actually read that he is not getting better to make the jump to the NHL anytime soon. Maybe he pans out maybe he doesnt but until that time comes for him this deal is a win for the Habs. Like I said, they just made their roster better...
Yah Gomez's contract is not a great one, but Montreal has enough young players to be able to take it on...
If they were gonna trade for Vinny it was gonna be players like Higgins, Pleks, Markov, Subban, picks etc involved. It would have crushed your team and you would not have been able to find suitable replacements in free agency bc like I said no one wants to sign there!...
Gainey in my mind did what he had to do and the only thing he could do. |
