I dont know about your urban area but around these parts most of the almost expired or expired food stuffs gets donated by the tractor trailer load to the local food bank for various charitable feedings of the homeless in the neighboring city, Although i think most of the carrot type produce is sent to the local biosoil recycling center

when i moved out of an apartment i shared with a buddy who turned out to be a thief and as white trash as white trash can be i took the scrubber thingy he does dishes with and his toothbrush and gave the inside of the bowl a good wiping down before returning the scrubber to the kitchen sink and his toothbrush to the toothbrush holder.

next time i saw him he was like 60% of his previous weight and i hope and pray every day that my actions gave him hepatitis at the very least.
