Well, the main use of radar is tracking commercial flights - by and large, they don't try to fly that low because they want people on the ground telling them that if they land it will be as a fireball.

Things under 5,000 feet have to fly a lot slower, and are generally speaking, pretty visible. So unless you happen to be a country that can't afford to actually monitor its airspace (when a jet drops out of Radar in this country it tends to get noticed) the system works pretty well.

Just to throw some more glucking in here-

These guys are used during military operations, and can detect things moving on the ground through radar, as well as things in the air(above and below the aircraft)

Also, ships that are in open water have a very low radar floor, and can usually pick up other boats.

???

wouldn't you want people to know where you re when your plane's on fire?

I just can't think of a situation where an airline would say yeah we don't really need to know where our (frank)ing $25 million dollar airplane with 300 people on board is just go dark for a bit

no no, it's for if the transponder is what's on or causing the fire.

apparently you have to be able to turn everything off on a plane in case it causes a fire.

they say fire is the thing pilots fear the most.

silly me, i fear dropping out of the (frank)ign sky.

very unlikely for a plane to drop out of the sky.

But if there's a fire that you can't stop, because you can't turn the thing causing it off... that's gonna make you drop out of the sky- while burning.
