I am 100% behind the NHL initiative to curb hits from behind and head shots. Make no mistake about that. When I heard there would be a hearing I knew James Wisniewski would be suspended for his hit. And having been suspended before you had to figure it would be more harsh. The repeat offender aspect of suspensions is highly debatable on a player by player basis. Some players are "dirty players" while other players have been suspended for more isolated plays. I think we all know the difference.
But looking at the hit below...I don't see this as even a dirty hit.
In Wisniewski's case, we are looking at a talented player, a top paid UFA defenseman this past summer, and a huge part of the initiative taken by the Columbus Blue Jackets in their bold attempt to make a push this season.
What I didn't expect was 8 games and what equated to one of the largest loss in salaries in NHL history (almost $540,000). That is steep! Way steep! And in my opinion over-the-top.
I know the NHL has said all previous suspensions don't come into play under Shanahan and that he is allowed to do as he pleases. Which I think is a great start. If this is the case then shouldn't Shanahan also examine the suspensions in Wisniewski's past to see "just how bad a repeat offender" Wisniewski really is. This suspension just makes Wisniewski's history even worse. And clearly when you see the play, you see Wisniewski didn't even see Clutterbuck until the last second. He reacted. Wisniewski was following the play. Clutterbuck didn't have the puck.
Everyone involved is saying the same thing, but talking to people last night at the Flyers/Rangers game everyone felt 8 games was way high for the infraction and the NHL is just using Wisniewski and half a million bucks to "make a point."
I think this suspension is wrong and should be somehow appealed.
As I see this play Wisniewski is following the play as #61 on the Wild is skating across and Clutterbuck comes flying in causing Wisniewski to react and pull up his hands. I think this is a very questionable suspension at all. Eight games?

I think if the Jackets deal Savard, they're nuts, but I would happily take him off of their hands. Matt Calvert, too. He may be small, but trust me, there's no quit in the guy and he's as creative as they come. I'd give anything to have a guy like that on my team. But then, the Oilers already do... he's just a bit more, er, experienced...
My Ryan Smyth story? Sure. I lived in Leduc (just south of Edmonton for you folks who don't know the area) from the end of 2002 till the end of 2006. I was thrilled to finally be living in the same city as the Oilers I grew up cheering for, and took every opportunity to catch a game with the season ticket my coworkers and I would share. Sure, figures we wouldn't renew the playoff seats one season as there was NO WAY the Oilers were going to beat Detroit in 2006, but I did manage to land a seat in one game in every round (including a Finals Game 6 seat that probably cost me more than the whole damn playoff package would have. Worth. Every. Cent.). It's the first round seat, though, that the story centers around...
I tried and tried for almost half an hour to land a spot for either Game 3 or 4 against the Wings on Ticketmaster, and just when I thought all hope was gone, a seat in the front row behind the goalie (Roloson twice) for Game 4 popped up. I snagged it, of course, and that night, I dressed up in my finest WHA Oilers orange jersey and blue hardhat and headed for the game. For those who don't remember, that particular contest did not go the Oilers' way, courtesy primarily of the officiating job perpetrated by one Marc Joanette, whose style of running a game consists of calling as many penalties on one team as he can (the Oil, in this case) until the game is out of hand, and then evening up the sheet in the last five minutes when it no longer matters. The only instance where this wasn't the case, however, happened right in front of me: Ryan Smyth and Chris Chelios were jostling in the corner, and Smyth managed to bait Chelios into taking a shot at him. It was pretty blatant; Joanette had no choice but to call it. As Joanette signalled for Chelios to head for the box, Chelios let go on Smyth with a verbal tirade while Smytty just grinned at him, knowing full well he'd pushed the old vet right over the edge. At this point, I'm up against the glass, giving Chelios a tongue-lashing; I've had no love for the guy since he brutalized an alumni of my hometown Brandon Wheat Kings, Brian Propp, way back when, and I remember vocalizing my wish that another ex-Wheatie, Ron Hextall, had finished the old man off when he had the chance (I'm not usually given to that sort of thing, but what he did to Propp was truly despicable).
Game ends with an Oiler loss, and everyone heads home, not even thinking that a Game 7 in the Stanley Cup Finals was even possible. I come back to work a couple of days later, and the boys let me know that there was a photo of me in the Edmonton Sun from that game. Sure enough, there's Yours Truly, up against the glass, snarling at Chelios, while Joanette is telling the perp where to go and how to get there and Smyth is smiling that "gotcha!" smile at him. I thought, "you know, that's kinda cool", so I stopped by the Sun offices and ordered a colour reprint of the photo. This in itself was quite the memento from a Cup run that captured my spirit in a way it hadn't been since 1990, but I would get the chance to make it even cooler: just before we were to move to Regina at the end of '06, I noticed that Smytty was doing a signing at a Ford dealership.
Off I went, wearing my white Smyth jersey with a shiny 2006 Stanley Cup patch freshly sewn to the front, and I got to meet him. He was as down-to-earth as they come, friendly and willing to chat a bit. After he signed the jersey, I pulled out the photo and asked if he wouldn't mind signing it as well. He looked it over and said, "Is that you there? That's so cool! What a great shot!" He autographed that as well, then I wished him luck for that season and went on my way. Little did I know that I would get to meet him again very shortly and under much sadder circumstances.
Even though I'd left town, I had made arrangements to return for my hero Mark Messier's jersey retirement ceremony. While I consider Messier to be perhaps the most complete hockey player to play the game, I thought of Smyth as the most Messier-like player the Oilers had since the Moose departed, in that he would do whatever it took to win, sacrificing his body in order to make plays happen. After first taking part in the civic ceremony to rename St. Albert Trail "Mark Messier Way" the day before, I found myself in the chair at my favourite tattoo shop to get some work finished before I headed off to the game that night vs. Phoenix. Being Trade Deadline Day, the radio was fixed on a sports channel, and the debate over Smytty's future raged on. At one point, it sounded like the deal was done and Smyth was staying put, but to my horror, information finally came out that it was not the case and Smyth had just been dealt to the Islanders for a package of prospects. I'd be lying to say I enjoyed the goings-on of the evening as much as I thought I would: while the night should have been entirely dedicated to honouring one of the greatest to play the game (seeing him holding the Cup that had eluded the '06 Oilers over his head was a sight I will never forget), it was obvious from the start that the players themselves (and, quite frankly, the fans as well) that something (read: someone) was missing. When the lights came up and the game itself got underway, the Coyotes manhandled the Oilers in the worst drubbing I've ever seen in person; Smyth may very well have been the heart of team as they never played so heartless before. This, of course, carried on for the rest of the season, and perhaps for a year or two more. My story, however, has one more chapter...
The next day, I was back at the airport, waiting for my flight back to Regina. As I entered the terminal, I noticed a large number of people crowded around something. The presence of video cameras and sound equipment suggested something big was up, so I approached and found myself watching Ryan Smyth's farewell press conference up close and personal. By that time, the media had played out every suggestion as to why this had happened: everything from Smyth demanded too much to Lowe wouldn't match the $100K difference on a new contract, but all in all, it didn't matter; it was evident from his words and the emotions displayed all over his face that it truly hurt him to leave this team and this city, and for whatever reason it was, the enormity of it all may have just finally washed over him then. As the press scrum broke off, he and his wife rose from the table and were starting to leave. I wrestled with an idea for a few moments, debating whether or not I'd be bothering the man in such a personal moment, but I called out to him from a few feet away. He looked up, and after a second or two, I could see the glimmer of recognition in his eyes. He said, "Hey... you're the guy with the picture, right?" I nodded, offered him my hand and a wan smile and said, "Yeah... um... best of luck on the Island, eh?" He returned the smile, shook my hand and said, "Thanks!", then they turned and headed for security.
As fans, we dedicate ourselves to both the ideas of "team" and "player". There are teams we like, and sometimes players we may or may not like ply their trade on that team. Sometimes we enjoy the player's work but either dislike, or are indifferent to, the team on which he plays. If we are lucky, the team and the player are on the same side, but on occasion, something occurs that results in a parting of ways. I am, and have been for many moons, first and foremost, a fan of the Edmonton Oilers. I've watched heroes come and go, but can't think of a time when a hero has come back again to this team (well, maybe Bill Ranford, but this is a bit bigger). Whether or not it makes sense financially, or whether he puts up the same numbers on the scoreboard, those things simply don't matter. I was on pins and needles all weekend during the Draft, not worried about whether or not the team would make the right choice and select Nugent-Hopkins, but instead waiting for the confirmation that Smyth was, in fact, returning to the Oilers. When that announcement finally came, I felt as though all was right in the universe; like finally getting that damned rock out of your shoe after having to walk on it for most of the day. When my friends and I drove north to Saskatoon to watch the pre-season game against the Blackhawks, and Smyth took to the ice, #94 once again on his back, all I can say is that it felt good. It just felt right. I had the fortune to not only witness his second First Goal against another team right in front of me, but captured the moment, albeit somewhat blurry, on my camera phone. Alongside him were Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins, two young players who will learn from him, both on the bench, in the dressing room, and most importantly, on the ice what it takes to succeed in this league, and maybe, just maybe, he'll stick around long enough to enjoy the ultimate prize with them. And aside from the family and friends who know him far better, no one will be happier to see that day come than I.
To the "tl;dr" crowd: a story like this shouldn't be abbreviated and if you can't take the time to read it, your loss. To anyone who did take the time, hope you enjoyed it. This sort of captures what it's like for me to be an adult hockey fan; maybe you might have a story just like it... I'd love to read it! - Hicks76

Anyways, I'm out. You (once again, you know who you are) can all rejoice bcecause I mean for good.
This site is making me sick of hockey discussions. It started with Ek's retarded attempt at registering hits on his site with his rumors being 97% false, then came the trolls, and my breaking point was getting insulted and laughed at by members of my own fanbase because of the simple fact that I'm an optimistic fan who wears his heart on his sleeve.
Most of you will just say "Who cares?" and move on...or say worse than that. And that's cool, but know I won't be reading it because I'm closing my account NOW and will never be back. I prefer to discuss the sport and the team I love in face-to-face discussions with actual people.

well thank you, thank you very much I will tell you the story.
Like I said it was back in '73, Prissy and I were just divorced or soon to be divorced, see I was caught with "little Elvis" in the cookie jar and by cookie jar I mean Ann Margrets ass. It was a tough time to be The King, Prissy was gonna take Lisa Marie away from me and I was a little bit of an emotional mess. I'm not sure if y'all know or not but I used to have a bit of a drug habit and this whole divorce thing made it all a little worse. So there I am getting ready to go on stage, It's around 8pm and I just woke up with a little cocktail of cocaine, methamphetamines, and speed with a deep fried peanut butter and banana sandwich back. I always needed a little pick me up when I got to wakin' up on account of my nighttime regiment of zopiclone, heroin, ambien and deep fried cheese sticks which I need to get to sleep. Well there I am tweekin' a bit, starting to feel the ol' ham pumpin' in my chest and I bust out with my classic opener See See Rider and I start to feel a little queasy. My stomach is going a mile a minute and I am dry heaving harder than the time that I went down on an greaser prostitute after Cash went back door/front door on her. Everyone in the audience is screamin' and I'm halfway through I got a woman/Amen and I yells "Take it away JD" he starts singin' the chorus and I'm letting loose fried peanut butter sandwich stage right.
Well I try and get my poop together, but The King is feeling like a can of smashed bumholes. I'm gettin' ready to call the concert off when up comes my good friend Chuck Norris. Now just so you don't think I'm just here dropping names , Chuck Norris back then wasn't the legendary Chuck Norris of today, hell the kid couldn't even grow a beard yet and I was just starting to teach him Kung Fu. Well Chuck told me to man up and get back out there and quit being a little baby, I said, Chuck baby don't you forget who you're talkin' to, I'm The King baby and I roundhouse kicked him so hard that his brother became legally retarded. Well after that (and a few lines, quick puff of the reefer, two horse tranquilizers, and a chili cheesedog) I felt great and went back on to perform the rest of the concert.
Now I wanna say that I've always loved Nashville, I got treated better there than I did anywhere else in the world outside of Tupelo or Memphis. The people are warm and kind, the ladies beautiful and the nightlife amazing. I think it's a goddamn shame that they're gonna take your ice hockey team away from ya an move it up to Qweebec City in Canada, it truly sickens me. - TheKing

Yeah, sorry for supporting the team...Do you ever read any of my posts in their entirety, or are you blinded by the fact that I'm not a fairweather fan like a bunch of you? For someone who has Larry Robinson as his avatar, you of all people should know that supporting a team means sticking with the team through thick and thin.
I never said he was awesome, but there's no reason to sh!t all over a guy just because of his contract, especially when he got said contract with another team. Since his arrival in Montreal, he's been great with the media, the fans, and his teammates. All the young players have praised him in terms of being supportive and a good leader. Sure, it's not worth $7 million+, but if supporting a member of the team makes me delusional, then I'm fine with that.
Better than being part of the chicken little group who want to trade the team and fire the entire front-office staff when the team loses a few games, just to hop back on the bandwagon when they start winning IMO.
