Let's be clear. The debate at hand is taking away "businesses" ability to PARTIALLY write off things like tickets. In a town that is mostly GOVERNMENT jobs, it makes keeping and attracting the PRIVATE sector that much more important. The whole reason tax deductions like this exist, is in actuality to create more tax money revenue. It may sound stupid, but it works. Whether you are a small business or a large one, taking out clients or more importantly POTENTIAL clients to events like sporting events or concerts can make the difference between getting a contract or not. Getting those contracts increase revenue....which in turn increase and stabilize job markets, which in turn means more tax dollars. The fact of the matter, to save 15 million (which is not the real number) you are going to reduce the overall tax revenue that sports teams and arena owners can generate for you. In the process, you are likely to reduce the # of jobs, which....surprise surprise....reduces your potential tax revenue stream even more. You don't just affect a team, you affect the arena, the vendors, the employees, the community, which all adds up to LESS generated tax revenue for the government.
I fully support reigning in tax loop holes that large corporations use to drastically reduce their effective tax rate. However a move like this will in fact effect small business owners more than the corporations.
The whole notion that the jackass thinks that this might reduce the cost of tickets at Leafs games for "normal" people is laughable. The Leafs have Millions of people in the direct area to draw on to sell tickets to. These people aren't going to buy the suites though. IF anything this kind of play would only serve to RAISE ticket prices in Toronto. There is no shortage of direct market audience for the Leafs. IF TML loses suite $$ what do you think they are going to do. They are going to pass the cost on to the other consumers. It's pretty standard and basic business. To make up for a shortfall in one area you make it up in another. So if the ticket average in Toronto is $123, now....then if this tax deduction is removed I can guarantee the ticket average will increase to around $140....easily. For TML it's a simple supply and demand issue. Always has been, always will. The Leafs organization would be unaffected by this....but something tells me the Raps would be in tough and ther Argos and Jays would struggle as well.
Some would say, if businesses want to take out a client to dinner/sports/concerts then that's on them. To a point you would be right.....but the burden this proposal would then place on smaller businesses would be substantial. This proposal favours large, established entities. Simply put, this kind of tax deduction is invaluable to small business, as a lot of the time this kind of thing is a key marketing tool. Congratulations........you are going to hurt the small guys a hell of a lot more than the big guys. The small guys represent a significant % of the job creators, by the way.
You want to be fiscally responsible then close the Salary loop holes on CEO's and corporations. Make the entire amount earned taxable, not just the "phony" reported annual salary. If you do that, IF you stop corporations and CEO's from being able to say "I earned 5 million, but 4million of that was a 'bonus' so it's exempt from the majority of the tax code".....close that loop hole and you will see returns greater than this paltry sum you are currently proposing.
There are so many loopholes that can be closed that will do more for the provincial and national economy than this dumbass idea.
This is right up there with the genius idea of putting water monitors on rural private land owners wells and then charging them for it. Way to go dippoop....just another genius idea to add tour list. - Sens2k5

Somebody pointed out to me that Steve Simmonds (I do not read or listen to his commentary) wrote an article the other day, stating what I have been saying here for some time. Burke has done well at trading but has been horrible at free agent signings.
I like Brian Burke, I actually commend him regularly for not bowing to public opinion, but he does give a little come free agent time. The NHL has changed from years past, there has yet to be any great free agancy oportunities which he spoke of in his rebuild on the fly speach 5 years ago. There is no way he could have foreseen this barron free agent market place. So he has tried to force things by overpaying some mediocre free agents to short term big money contract, and hoped for the best.
Komisarek has proved to be a big body player that punishes the offensive opponents in his own end, but has struggled under the constant fast paced game that Wilson demands of his defense. Some have said that he has tried to do too much, in living up to his contract, but I argue that the system we play is the fault.
Schenn has struggled after he signed for a larger cap hit and although he is not really a free agent signing I have included for reason. He has also been one of Toronto's more physical Dmen, and also is accused of slow feet and poor judgement. I believe he has bee a victim of the system in which he plays which actually works against any physical defenseman that is used to playing large minutes.
Connolly was the runner up prize to Richards and has been a major disappointment. He has been relegated to a roll playing position and a penalty killer.
Armstrong has not faired well after being signed by Brian Burke. He has often been injured and recently been in effective.
Orr was not a great signing. I liked Orr in Leaf's uniform but Wilson apparently didn't, especially after his concussion.
Bozak and MacArthur have been a bargain.
When you figure our third line makes 11.25 million and produces what they have, I would say that is a Moneypuck fail, even if the stats vary from arena to arena.
When you figure
Our top line makes $11.15 million (no free agents) Bozak and Kessel were resigned
Our second line makes $8.5 million (Mac was resigned) Grabo & kuli will bolt because they will not get what Army and Connolly warrant.
Our third line makes $11.25 million (Army and Connolly were free agents Lombo was a throw in salary dump.)
Our forth line under $2.5 million
Bad signings effect performance and anger fans but also provide anomosity in dressing rooms. Do you want to work with someone who does half of what you do but make double? I know our players don't.
I commend Brian Burke for not caving to public out cry but I think he should have used the trade deadling to rid himself of some cancerous contracts.
MoneyPuck may not be relevent in hockey but anytime you put money vs production under the microscope you don't have to be an expert to see a problem.
Wilson's system, and Burke's cancerous free agent contracts may be the demise of the team he is trying to build. If he would have cut his losses with Connolly and Army for whatever he could get, it would have helped contract negotiations for Kuli and Grabo. He may have been clearing space for his youngsters, but he should have started them on the third line.- stevecarpetman

got hammered one night with my friends, was supposed to stay over his house...i hate sleeping at other peoples houses
tried to crash at his place, wasn't happening
get in the car like a moron, hit the curb on the way out of his development
get on the parkway and a minute or two later i feel a wobble
hmmm
i give it a minute, doesn't get better so i pull over (major highway, usually tons of cops and i am hammered)...go and look at the tire, yup..it's flat
pull hockey bag out of the trunk, take out fix a flat
put fix a flat on, push button, toad gets hit in face with fix a flat that shoots out of the tire that has next to zero sidewall left
toad makes decision to try and get home...12 more miles on the highway..late at night..summer, hammered
if i waited for someone i was screwed..hammered
so, back in the car, few minutes later the noise starts...hmm, can't be good
ka klonk ka klonk
that stops...now the screeching starts...awesome
i look in the rearview and sparks shooting out the back like i was the (frank)ing space shuttle re- entering the atmosphere
hmmm, coming up to the speed trap on parkway..awesome
somehow no cops see this (frank)ing light show
2 more miles till home
up and down a big hill, i get to the top at the end of it and look back..ball of rubber in the middle of the road on fire...remnants of the tire :O
i make it home, wake up at noon the next day
mom asks what the hell happened
"got a flat tire"
the rim makes the story, without the pic people don't get how (frank)ed up that ride was
and no, i don't drive like that anymore - Toad in Nj
