The penalty calling has been atrocious since the lockout and rule changes. I don't completely blame the refs for the problem though. I look at the game itself, and it is quite obvious the refs get a shorter leash in nationally televised games over all else. The same can be said about games with greater draw, rivalries, division leaders competing, etc. This is the factor that makes it feel like in the pre-allstar season the games are called one way and post-allstar they are called much differently. This time of year, the leaderboards become top story. A game between the Redwings and the Blackhawks is national hockey news. More eyes are on these games and the officials seem to let things happen to reduce the number of game changing calls on the ice.
Don't believe me? Talk to Blues fans. Bottom dwellers for the last several years, you couldn't defend a teammate in a tight spot without taking a penalty if you wore a Blue-note. Even to start this season, calls were finicky, often resulting in petty calls against the team. Now, number one in the league, they are headline news. The NHL has a great story to tell if the Blues make the finals, and the refs are doing everything they can to give them that chance.
It may not feel like it after watching the most recent game vs Chicago, where the Blues were given only one powerplay against six Chicago advantages. I'm not going to defend the Blues penalties because they were deserved. However, the amount of slashing, holding, and post whistle shenanigans presented plenty of opportunities to even up the PP time. But Chicago is one of the pets of the NHL, despite the Blues current success.
Go back one game when the Blues took on Columbus, and the story was 100% different. In an obvious Instigator call, the Blues were given the benefit, with Shattenkirk drawing a 4 minute double minor for roughing, (despite both players dropping the gloves and throwing punches) and a 2 minute elbowing penalty to avoid the 10 minute misconduct the instigator would have required. Columbus is done in terms of playoff hopes, it was a local broadcast, no one was worried about this game other than the two teams and their fans. The result, favors and PR penalties. Give the Blues two points so their storybook gets another chapter.
I am a HUGE Blues fan, but I am not afraid to take the truth for what it is. After years of complaining about being on the receiving end of the F-U stick, I know what Columbus fans felt in that game. The league can make many changes to rules, pad size, and even interactions between players and the media, but the biggest PR nightmare this league is creating for itself is the way the games are called. Small market teams and even middle market teams have enough trouble bringing in new fans. The teams cannot afford the raw talent that big market teams can afford. But when the game is played, the penalties should be called evenly. Standings, tenure, or fan-base should not decide who calls which games, which games get called tighter than others, and which teams get the benefit.
And for heaven's sake, get rid of the instigator AND the diving penalty. The instigator just gives room to the guys that run around looking for the hit rather than the puck, and the diving rule is never enforced. If it were, the entire Vancouver team would have issued this complaint years ago. They dive so much I expect half of them in the summer Olympics every four years. - Soulja183 |

The last 3-4 games have been some of the worst I have seen Alfie play in years. The guy just looks stupid out there, not sure what he has been thinking.
The whole team played bad, but it starts with your best all around player.
Pathetic game really. Yesterday too.
Also, this is a joke when the Leafs come to town; Habs too.
Its an easy fix to start....PUT IN A (frank)ING DRESS CODE, no jerseys allowed unless they are Ottawa's or Team Canada's. Simple. It won't stop the fans from coming, but it certainly won't LOOK as pathetic. And don't say they can't, they totally can do that.
I'd like to hear other ways to lower it down to at least 80/20...please brainstorm. Ottawa loses 6 home games a year basically. Tor/Mtl
- BodyCheckRadio
come on dude, i love trolling and making fun of leaf fans as much as anyone else, but that's just ridiculous. if those guys want to pay money to come to the game, wear any jersey they want. as long as things don't get stupid in the stands (violence and general douchebaggery) then go for it. i'm sure the players love it, makes for a great atmosphere. always loud no matter who's winning, it's awesome.
tonight's game sucked, but it didn't hurt the sens, and it hurt the leafs draft position. so at the end of the day, who cares.
- sensarmy_11
Its not stupid at all. Its a joke watching it and listening to it. And although they pay money, it doesn't give them the right to do anything. Its a private establishment, They will still come anyways, but honestly looking at all those jerseys makes me sick. Bars do it, so do other places - there is nothing 'wrong' about it. Its a joke and likely will deter some people for sure.
Don't know about you, but I'm tired of losing 6 home games a year. There are some buildings where the punishment is being berated, littered on or worse if you wear another teams jersey...this isn't far fetched

I just want to put this in perspective for some people.
Remember when the Leafs made the playoffs? I know it was a long time ago but think about. We have to go back 8-9 years back when Sundin, Domi, Roberts, Tucker and Cujo were leading this team. Not to mention, Wendel Clark was in his twilight in that time period as well. Hell even Jeremy Roenick was playing in the league!!! *Shiver goes down my spine*
Damn, that seems so long ago. Again, let it sink in.
I was watching a video the other night when the Leafs were playing the Senators in the playoffs and Gary Roberts won the game in 3OT. Again, another faded memory. Good times though!!
So where am I going with this?
Well I noticed a young Chris Neil playing for the Senators. Then I looked harder and I saw a Zdeno Chara making a minimal impact mind you, trying to stop the aging Leafs. We all know how that ended.
Where are those guys today? Obviously Neil is still contributing to a successful Ottawa club at the age of 32 and Chara is amoung the leagues best defensemen, although we all knew he was chosen over for Wade Redden at the time. In hindsight, it seems completely absurd but these are the realities. Not to mention, Chris Neil and Zdeno Chara still likely have another half decade of hockey left in them.
Again, let it sink in.
I know Burke publicly believed in his team, beyond their abilities, but please don't be upset about it. I know Cox, Simmonds, and a lot of posters on this site will have you believe that EVEN IF the Leafs kept their current team for years upon years, they'd still never make the playoffs. I know it's a common theme that people don't believe anyone good will ever sign or re-sign (Kessel) here ever. Again, please don't take it to heart.
Think about how long a career is and how much can change. Case in point, Kessel is 24 and for all intents and purposes has another 10+ years of hockey in him. Hell maybe even 15.
That can be said for a lot of guys on out team too.
So just give it some thought, really. Think about it.
Let's see what conclusions you draw since you think Kessel should just go to a contender since we'll never be one. Really? - Holy_GM

Ill just do it straight up:
7:Sens vs Yotes... Sens tougher more offensive even goaltending phoenix better d.... Sens honestly do take that but Phoenix is a team that can pull off upsets with good defense and clutch scorers like Doan and Vrbata. Still Spezza Karlsson... and all around better talent. 1 point EAST
8:Washington Vs Colorado... Obviously Washington talent wise, but i will say Colorado is definatly on the rise... I think the Johnson trade was a poor one although i think Johnson will be good for the Avs they gave up too much... But Duchene is a beast and Stastny a real smart and talented passer and they have some great prospects, just hope for there sake Varly becomes a # 1... another point EAST
9:Buffalo vs L.A... Los Angelas easily takes it, they have some of the most talent in the NHL although Buffalo should have good goaltending a strong defense and an average offense which should put them in the playoffs. I must say from a guy who dislikes Buffalo and Vancouver, Vancouver really really won that trade at the deadline... I believe Hodgson is a 2a center in his prime, which is not bad but i think Kassian is a 1b winger like a little less tough version of Lucic with better hands... I would LOVEEE Kassian in blue and white but that would never happen. Dumb trade he was your future you coulda signed a 2A center... Also Ennis and Gerbe will not be top line players. L.A has so much more star power and an all around skill and toughness, also better goaltending... Better in every way except maybe depth in skill. Buffalos 3rd and 4th liners might have more talent but L.As are tougher. WEST 1 point
10eg Vs SJ: SJ is much better but the peg will by the time Marleau and big joe start slowin down. Pavelski will still make them a good team but peg has a really really skilled young forward group. They need to add a corner stone d man and let Enstrom and Bogosian develop and they will be great. Byfuglien is good off the rush but he makes soooo many defensive mistakes... Honestly i have NO clue WHY HE IS ON D... It makes no sense he doesnt even hit that much on D he should be a forward 100 percent... It makes 0 SENSE to me its the biggest mystery to me i honestly can understand it... When he goes to the net there is no stopping him, i mean he scored a lot of goals last year on D but he is pretty terrible in his own end... He should be on the first line with Kane and Schieffle next year NO DOUBT. They would work the cycle and play a shoot and crash the net game that would work VERY well. Even Little could play that style... They get a number 2 shutdown d man and they will be so set... Enstrom and Bogo can run the PP on the points they are both good up and coming d man. Enstrom is the next Karlsson, he will break out soon. Bogo has tons of speed he can hit and hes got a rocket, he will be at least a number 2 d man. Someone like Dan Girardi or Marc Staal or Shea Weber or more reasonably Mark Giordano. They could trade Burmi to land him and run Little Wheeler and Ladd on the second line and also play a rough and tumble go to the net type game. Thats a great top six...anyways im guessing no one took the time to read that rant on the peg... 2nd point to west though.
11: Calgary Vs Carolina... This is a close one, Iginla and Staal i would call even... Ward takes the cake on goaltending... Carolina has better prospects considering Calgary has none and Carolina has Ryan Murphy. And Skinner is one of the best pure goal scorers in the game behind Stamkos and probably Kessel... but i dont think he will be behind Kessel for long which sucks to hear myself say. So EAST a 3rd point.
12: Anaheim vs Toronto: YIKES... Anaheim has us beat in goaltending and forwards... and im looking past Ryan Perry Selanne and Getz... Im thinking of Smith Pelly Holland and Palmieri... Pretty sure i spelled that wrong but im not looking him up, he is a slightly less aggressive bigger version of Brad Marchand. Him and Smith Pelly both remind me a lot of Marchand... Quick gritty players under six feet who just have good hands and are really quick in every way. So yeah they do have us beat in scoring although we ripped them in a trade last year. Im not being bias when i say we have a better defense then them... a lot better our defense is quite good... and they get ripped on to much, there good on paper and off paper its just the RW system was really rough on rough defenders who didnt have great speed like Schenn Franson Komisarek... We do have a great defense though, Gunner is solid Phaneuf is actually very good this year and doesnt get enough credit as he doesnt make many mistakes like years past, Schenns still developing and had a great year last year, he will get back to that... Gardiners a beast... Liles is having a bit of a rough year but a lot of guys do when they first move to there 2nd team. Franson is still young and shows lots of promise... Komi will do a lot better under Carlyle, Holzer and Blacker and Percy coming up... We are looking good on D.. I just hope we dont get rid of Komi Phaneuf or Schenn because they are our only really physical d men... Holzer and Blacker hit but not like them. Although the Ducks have Fowler and Shultz a deadly PP combo but they may lose Shultz... And besides that they have poop all on D... 3rd Point WEST
Tie Break Tampa Minny... Tampa takes it just because they have the best pure goal scorer in the game and better vets... Minny has them in goaltending and they both have weak defense but at least tampas got Hedman and Aulie who are up and comers... Minny doesnt have much going for up and coming d men. So east wins but it had to go to tie break and if i used the 6th place team West woulda won so its really close.... Well im sure no one read this but i was bored so i did this... - Bar-South

We have started a movement to push for ZERO attendance at the Maple Leafs final home game this year vs Tampa Bay. We as die hard, life long, Leaf fans have finally had enough and we want OUR say as to the product MLSE is shoving down our throats. We are upset with the way the team is being run and how the team has been playing. Not just this year... for years! At the moment we have a Facebook group (see below) and adding notes everywhere we can. We are emailing various news & sports sites. We do realize the fact that the game is already sold out via season ticket holders. That is not the issue. We cannot control or hurt the pocket book of MLSE so we want to get at them the only way we can and that is through the embarrassment and humiliation of having no one attending the final game. Put your ticket aside and lets show MLSE that we DO CARE what product they put on the ice!!!! Leafs Nation has had enough and now it is our time to have a say.

How in thee blue sweet Jesus can ANYONE with even a 1/23rd of a brain be "happy with most of the core" of this LOSING, NON PLAYOFF team that after being completely rebuilt from when Burke got here til now, still sucks, still has no conceptual clue how to PK, has no clue how to take advantage of the bazillion powerplays the leafs are gifted with on a nightly basis. Your Core.......hmmm...
Phanuef.....will only fight midgets not named Tootoo, has no leadership skills whatsoever, and is a defensive liability as big as Kessel....Captain FOREHEAD is what he is....
Kessel......Afraid of EVERYTHING, hit him once his game falls apart, is fantastic as scoring with NOTHING on the line, bring in pressure (see any playoff game implications, any BRuins game to redeem his honor against Sequin), and he wilts like a daisy.....
Reimer......had the making of a decent starter UNTIL ALLAIRE decided he sucked and has tried to completely remake his game into his image, something HE CANNOT DO.....good luck with that....
Kommisarek.....probably the best actual leader you have....but can't lead from the press box all season....
Macaurthr, Kulemin, Schenn, Connolly, all thrown under the bus never to be seen or heard again......
Gardiner...the savior....is about 5 years from being a COMPLETE dman, while...
Gunnerson.....your actual BEST dman is given crap minutes on a nightly basis...
Colbourne.....Downey soft and will not see another game under this regime....
Blacker.....oh yeah why have a version of Alex Edler when you have captain Forehead????
Now you have an offensive team, with a defensive ONLY coach......hmmm....and Burke's still da man right???? [ ] Marc Crawford shoulda been this teams coach, they're built for him.....Of course If Burke really had a clue he woulda shipped out everyone LAST year, and rebuilt properly, and had Eakins as his coach but alas, Until DUDLEY gets the reigns in 5 years from Now after Nonis has been Burke's equivellent to LOwe's finger puppet, Tambellini, I mean my god what a disfunctional mess....The ONLY team NOT to have made the playoffs since the lockout....and everyone still believes one center or one goalie will fix this clusterf&^$% [ ] I NEED some of what you guys are on!!!!!!!!!

" As I posted in Becketts blog:
This is absolutely the lowest point in Toronto Maple Leafs franchise history.
Reasoning:
1) Burke is not interested in a 5 year rebuild
It is the closing of year 4 and his Leafs are in a lottery pick position. He just fired his coach that he so adementaly bragged about for so long and his new coach seems dumbfounded by the lack of confidence in his roster and the inability to play a tough style of hockey...oh yeah and the ability to keep the puck out of the net AND get shots on goal at the same time appears to not be an option.
2) Longest Stanley Cup drough in NHL history
Yup, whether you want to lump LA and St.Louis in that title to make youself feel better, it doesn't change it from being true. The last time the Leafs made the playoffs they were at something like 38 years....they're now at 45 years and will most definitely hit 50 years.
3) On the verge of being the only team in the NHL to not have made the playoffs in the post-lockout era.
Yup, even the Florida Panthers are about to make it...the FLORIDA FRANKING PANTHERS!!! I recall myself saying at the start of the year when people were pumping up the Panthers saying they might actually make it...my response was "Put a Maple Leafs uniform on that roster and they will finish in the bottom 5" I still think I would be right if that were the case...but it goes to show what an experienced goalie and fantastic coaching can do for an average team. Both of which are something the Leafs have had none of for the past 4 years.
4) Longest home losing streak in franchise history
Toronto has been apart of the NHL since it played it's first game on December 19th, 1917....and of that 95 year history they are in their longest home game losing streak RIGHT NOW...in the peak of Burke's "not interested in a 5 year plan" plan.
5) No Franchise Player
They have no cap space, no franchise player, no #1 centre and Burke's highest draft pick as Leafs GM (Kadri) is being called "the worst handled 1st round draft pick I've ever seen" by Don Cherry...whether you like Cherry or not, he's partially right in saying that.
Burke is in a position where he will have a high draft pick that would be a major factor in a trade to get that #1 centre....but isn't it time the Leafs actually held on to a high 1st rounder and perhaps drafted a potential franchise player? Some of you will say there are no franchise players in this draft to which I say "Cool story bro, can you pass over your crystal ball when you're done with it?".
It's not that I think Burke should be fired, cause I don't, but I do think he needs to put his cocky attitude and "principals" aside and worry more about building a competative hockey team and less about talking to the media on why they should and shouldn't write certain articles or call players moms.
Whatever pick the Leafs end up with...why is it that of the top 5 picks; I have this sinking feeling the Leafs will draft the only one from the top 5 that doesn't turn out?
This is by far, the lowest point in Toronto Maple Leafs history...and it's in year 4 of Burke's "I'm not interested in a 5 year rebuild" plan."
