To Oilers Fans Everywhere:

We all thought this was going to be the year the Oilers turned the corner. Obviously, that hasn't happened, and it hurts. It's frustrating – for all of us. For our fans, for our players and staff, and for everyone in our community who shares a common bond around a game, a team and a city that we love.

I know this will almost certainly be the eighth consecutive year since we made the playoffs. I hate that fact as much as anyone, but the reality is that this is only year four of the rebuild that started when we drafted Taylor Hall. The good news, if you can call it that, is that other teams that committed to fundamental rebuilds went through the same kind of droughts over the same kind of time frames, or longer. That doesn't make it fun for anyone; it just means we have to stay the course.

Yes, we hoped and expected to be better this year – there's no question about that. But we've also been more active than any team I can think of in rebuilding our organization from bottom to top by supporting player development in OKC and Bakersfield, revamping our scouting organization, naming a new GM and a new coach, signing free agents like Justin Schultz, Boyd Gordon, Andrew Ference, Anton Belov and Ilya Bryzgalov, and trading for players like David Perron, and now Ben Scrivens and Matt Hendricks. And we're not done.

But I can also tell you that we are not going to sacrifice the future by doing something short-term. Those days are over and they're not coming back. If we're going to rebuild, we want to do it right and we only want to do it once.

I hear a lot from fans about accountability, so let's be clear. We are all accountable. That includes me, Kevin, Craig, Dallas, every player who wears our jersey, and every member of our staff. I know Kevin is the target of a lot of personal attacks right now, and that's really unfortunate. Kevin is a big part of our organization, and it's not just the Oilers that value his knowledge and perspective. He is consistently chosen, year after year, to play a leadership role with Hockey Canada. But when it comes down to it, this is Craig MacTavish's team. He is the GM. He makes the calls, and he is accountable for building a team that can compete for the Stanley Cup -- year in and year out for years to come.

That's our vision. We are committed to it -- and we're confident that we are on the right track.

Our fans have been incredibly patient and supportive. At the same time, we know there's a lot of frustration and we are asking you to hang in there while we fight through this and put the next few pieces of the team in place.

I'll tell you this, despite everything, we all wear our Oilers colours with the same pride now as we ever have, and as we will when we're back on top. We hope you'll do the same.

We value our fans, we hear you, and we appreciate your support.

That doesn't make it fun for anyone; it just means we have to stay the course.

Yes, we hoped and expected to be better this year – there's no question about that. But we've also been more active than any team I can think of in rebuilding our organization from bottom to top by supporting player development with the Phantoms, revamping our scouting organization, naming a new Assistant GM and a new coach, signing free agents like Vincent Lacavalier, Mark Streit and Ilya Bryzgalov, and trading for players like Steve Downie and we're not done.

But I can also tell you that we are not going to sacrifice the future by doing something short-term. Those days are over and they're not coming back. If we're going to rebuild, we want to do it right and we only want to do it once.

You've been inCalgary too long....your brain is turning into mush!
Anybody that is stupid enough to blame this teams woes on the 4th line ...especially a 24 yr old kid that is shaping up to be one of the best scrapers in the league should flat out FO and die! First you get some....at least 4...real live NHL defencman....then some forwards that can actually play hockey ...that are over 200lbs -authenticated pounds! And a goalie....let them play for a while...then if Gazdic is still glaringly costing us games (as you see it) we'll do something about. Until then......your still and idiot!

In the Kessel V Ryan thread:

It warms my heart to know that where once we had divisional championships and even got to watch the Stanley Cup be awarded from ice level, now we have a bubble team hoping that our rebuild doesn't end in the middle.

Just like it warms my heart that on this board, where once we had a great many intelligent and objective Sens fans, we now have one voice spouting nonsense and embarassing the rest of us to the point where we Sens fans can't even talk hockey on this board anymore.

Whichever Sens-hater who invented the Doppleganger character, well done. You've pretty much silenced us. No dignity remains.

- Mr_Squeaks

I'm sorry you find it embarrassing that I express my opinions, and defend them when challenged by the many posters who seem to wearing blinders.

I suppose you think it's nonsense when I point out the Senator's top scoring Center could easily find a roster spot on the leafs roster.............but the leaf fans hear think otherwise.

I guess only a Sens hater would point out that a Norris winning, top scoring defense man is huge asset to the Senators, even though the leaf fans here claim they would not make a trade to acquire him, if they were the leafs GM.

I find it strange that you have not found the ongoing discussion (in a few threads) about a teams chances to make the playoffs, when they fall behind early in the season, intelligent enough for you.

I've pointed out for years now that teams have a hard time climbing back into playoff contention, even thought they've "only five or six points back" at the end of November. Many posters just can't believe the stats that back this up. For the past SIX seasons, there has been only 3 of the 32 teams that were 4 or more points out of a playoff position by the beginning of November, who beat the odds against then and went on to make the playoffs.

I guess you did not find my Opinion objective enough for you taste, when I predicted that both the leafs and the Senators would be challenging for the two wildcard spots, at the beginning of this season.

I'm sorry I don't meet your high expectations.

It's pretty easy for me to say this now, but there's so many reasons it was hard to watch the Flyers from mid 2011 until December of this season, because I knew Laviolette's coaching scheme wasn't working and wasn't going to work. The Flyers had the best record in the NHL mid-season in 2010-2011, then had a terrible, plummeting second half of the season and limped into the playoffs. They beat Buffalo in the first round and got swept by Boston in the second round. We all remember that, eh? I remember telling my friends towards the last 1/3 of the season that Laviolette needed to go because the team had quit on him. I lost all faith in him that year. I know the goalie carousel and Pronger getting injured didn't help. I also realize they lost to the eventual champions. But to go to from the league's best record, to almost getting upset by Buffalo in the first round, to getting embarrassed by the Bruins;....that plummet was Laviolette's fault. So the next season Carter and Richards both shockingly got traded in the offseason and they brought in Bryzgalov. Flyers had a decent season and had a hell of a series against the Penguins, upsetting Vegas' Stanley Cup pick. They lucked out the next round and got home ice against the Devils. But Laviolette was horribly outcoached that series. He refused to adjust his game and the Devils exposed the heck out of the Philly D. The Flyers should have at least made it to the conference finals that year. That whole offseason I was so upset because I wanted Lavvy gone so bad. At that point, everyone was sick of hearing me complaining about Laviolette for two years. In my opinion the Flyers were huge underachievers since their run to the finals in 2010 and Lavvy was the one holding them back. Last season they failed to make the playoffs and I became blue in the face, putting all the blame on Lavvy. I couldn't stand him as Flyers coach. Coming into this season, I loved the Flyers group of players, but I knew they weren't going to be contenders playing for Laviolette. When they came out slow, I was the only one out of my group of friends that didn't wanna blow the team up, because I liked our players. Then three games into the season, they finally fired Laviolette. First of all, I was almost dancing naked in the streets because I was so happy he was finally gone, but secondly I was so excited to watch the games, because I knew they had the players to be a championship style team. It was just a matter of getting some good direction. I watched almost all of Berube's games when he played as a Flyer and I really believed he was born to be the Flyers head coach and he'd be such a good fit for the team and the city. My point to this whole post is that this season has been one of my favorite Flyers seasons ever, because I knew that once they got rid of Lavvy, these players would flourish under Berube and the Flyers would rise again in good old Flyers fashion. Look at all these young players turning into legitimate superstars and look at how the Flyers are built from top to bottom. Berube is getting the most out of his players and his team is built for a championship. One scary thought is that coaching is a strong suit of the Flyers now and on paper, they're built to rumble with the best. Sorry to clog up the feed, but I'm Flyered up and I knew this team was better than settling for Laviolette's mediocre seasons. The sky is the limit now.
