Why on Earth would Hutton have signed with us to compete for a 1A/platoon gig when he was clearly going to get offers to be a starter (who has to fend off a promising youngster and may eventually cede into a 1A/platoon role)? Being the highest paid and more experienced goalie in Buffalo is an objectively better situation for him than being paid less than Allen and trying to take the job. We weren't re-signing Hutton without offering substantially more money than Buffalo. If I were Hutton's agent, I would have strongly advised him against signing in St. Louis for a penny less than Jake Allen. Otherwise, any promise of open competition for the 1A spot here is just talk. Money talks in pro sports and contract status matters to some degree in every single organization. Guys making more money are going to get more opportunities than those who aren't (for better and worse). If an organization won't offer you the same amount of money as someone else at your position while you are a UFA, then you are not on equal footing when competing for ice time 4 months later. Hutton would have been insane to take a 3x3 deal with us instead of 3x$2.75 from Buffalo. And he would have been equally foolish to not test the free agent market in order to take a 3x3 extension here.
Nilsson didn't start a single game for the Blues and was acquired as insurance in a year where Binny and Cop were playing marginally in the AHL and the team was competing for home ice in the toughest division in hockey. 3 of the NHL's top 5 teams were in the Central that year and we were one of them. Top 5-10 teams should absolutely be prioritizing winning over seeing what they have in young goalies who aren't excelling at the AHL level. Home ice advantage in the 1st round helped this team win a game 7 against the Hawks and get closer to the Final than it has been since the playoff format was expanded to 16 teams. Allen and Elliott posted .920 and .930 SV%s that season and one of them was healthy for every single game. Nilsson was acquired at the trade deadline after Elliott got hurt for insurance down the stretch. No team in the NHL would have started spoon feeding starts to Copley or Binny in March while in the middle of a dogfight for playoff positioning while carrying one of the best records in the league. Similarly, no team in the league would have been spoon feeding starts to Binny/Copley prior to that acquisition when we had 2 NHL goalies playing damn good hockey. That team was 4th in goals allowed. You don't screw around with that and bring in a 3rd goalie just to see what you have in a couple long shot prospects. Acting like this organization did anything wrong with their goalies in 2015/16 is absurd. No NHL team would have been handing out chances to Binny/Copley at the expense of winning games that year and claiming otherwise is revisionist history.
I agree that Husso/Binny should have been given a look last year, but the very first chance would have been February. Hutton stole a ton of starts from Allen and was playing like an absolute monster. Allen had a .913 on the year through the Dallas game on 12/29/17 that was the beginning of the "Hutton as #1 run." Going into smaller sample sizes, Allen posted a .907 through the end of November and a 13-6-1 record. He had been great in October (7-2-1 with a .921) and mediocre-to-bad in November (6-4-0 with a .891) and then turned it on again in December (5-6-1 with a .922). I vehemently disagree if you contend that the Blues should have carried 3 goalies during this stretch and prioritized starting Husso/Binny at any point over a goalie who was playing like an actual NHL starting goalie or our backup who posted an astounding .946 through December. Turn the page to the new year and Allen only got 2 starts in the month of January because Hutton continued being historically good (.943 in Janurary, bringing his season long SV% to .945). Again, I will vehemently disagree that we should have been carrying 3 goalies and given Husso/Binny either of Allen's 2 starts or any of Hutton's.
February is the first time where carrying 3 goalies would ave made any kind of sense base on goaltending play. However, at the start of February, we were 3rd in the division and Dallas/Colorado were in striking distance. On February 20, this team was 4th in the Central and sitting in the top Wild Card spot. This team was very much in the business of winning games and not prioritizing prospects over winning games. Every other NHL organization would have been as well. I don't believe any NHL organization would have even considered bringing in a 3rd goalie based on the first couple weeks of February. Hutton was great in 2 of his first 3 February games and Allen had a great start and a decent start in his first 2 starts of the month. There was essentially a 2 week window from 2/11/18-2/27/18 where Hutton and Allen both struggled. That is really the first time where a 3rd goalie stealing starts would have made sense, but I think the vast majority of teams would (and should) have given their 2 NHL guys a few games to figure it out. Hutton had 2 quality outings coming out of this stretch and then got hurt during a morning skate. Allen started the game that night and stopped 34 of 35 in a loss. Husso then sat on the bench behind Allen and watched him go 8-2-0 with a .926 over the next 10 games. The team made a playoff push and every game was essentially a must win. Again, not a good time to prioritize seeing a prospect over winning. By the time Allen cooled off, there were 5 games left in the season and Hutton was back in the lineup. Realistically, 2-4 starts is the absolute most that any organization would have given Husso based on how last season unfolded.
Anger was probably a poor choice of words by me. I also discuss/argue passionately and really enjoy goalie conversations with you on this board. I think you and I disagree pretty strongly about how teams should handle goaltending, but we always have good discussions. We absolutely agree about Maroon, although I do see the merit in playing him until we can trade him. |
