I have never been so digusted. What happened to our top players? How does a team that has the very best group of forwards, the best group of defensemen, a top five goaltender and the very best NHL coach not destroy a fragile, low talent and two decade long losing team? I believe a lot of this lost goes back to March 26, 2019. One of the darkest days in franchise history. The day they disrespected their NHL coach. The winningest coach in NHL in franchise history. A coach that has not been the same since that contract. Did anyone notice him during the series? No emotion, no drive, no change to strategy, terrible with the media. March 26 made me question my allegiance to the Lightning. My family has elected not to renew our season tickets because of this decision. With the Kings and Flyers hiring new coaches and paying them quite handsomely, Cooper is now outside of the top 10 list of best paid coaches. It's abhorrent. The coaching decisions in this series have been questionable at best. I believe this is directly related to March 26th.
I believe it is time to make significant changes to this team. Point with one single goal in 4 games I believe should be traded to the highest bidder. Miller, Palat, Killorn... ship them out. Stralman, Coburn, Girardi and Rutta... let them walk.
I know this may not be popular but I believe Julien BriseBois should be fired. He had so many assets to deal at the deadline. Looking at Duchene dominate in the series, there is no way the Bolts should have let him go to Columbus. Tampa could have sent more to Ottawa.
I hope that in the face of this loss, Jeff Vinik will consider selling the team. At the end of the day, he is directly responsible for this humaliating loss.
In the face of all the nasty messages and bullying directed towards me, this will be my final post on hockeybuzz. - Gramps28

Nothing good from the Leafs thread?
Canucks thread used to be a goldmine after Chicago dominated them in an elimination game for the 84th time |

(about the possibility of Duchene re-sining in CLB)
While I am hoping you re-sign him for the extra 1st rounder Ottawa will get, I am not hopeful you will be able to retain him or Dzingel either. After watching his PR schtick for the last couple of seasons and the way he played for you, I would not expect much in terms of commitment and here's why:
1. Before he was traded to CBJ, he said the exact same things to the media about Ottawa as he was saying about Columbus, just saying these things less effusively (it's a word, look it up...) about Columbus. He said when he was in Ottawa that the locker room itself was the tightest group he's ever played with, like a brotherhood and he couldn't wait to go into battle with that group every night. Even with the great personnel, that wasn't enough to convince him to sign here on an $8M * 8 year contract even with two years of pandering by the team. You guys sold the farm for the next 2-3 years to get two rounds of playoff hockey, and there will not be much coming up the pipe after this year. What incentive does he really have to stay?
2. The departure of Panarin and Bobrovsky will have the same impact on Duchene considering resigning as what the trading of Stone and Karlsson had on him here. No one wants to resign for a team where all the big fish are jumping ship even if it does mean more money coming your way.
3. You won't believe me on this but this last point probably matters the most.Ohio is an anti-abortion state that will be a HUGE disincentive to having younger players sign here just given the extra hassles their WAGs will have to put up with in the event of unwanted or unexpected pregnancies. Despite what your political indoctrination might lead you to believe, this is a HUGE consideration about where people choose to play - the values the area you play for puts out politically. Duchene was, based on what I've seen him be involved in, a pretty progressive and liberal thinking guy with a very kind heart who would want to avoid these types of considerations as much as possible.
There is no way as a pro athlete you want your brand tarnished by having to touch issues like this with a ten foot clown pole, and the idiocy being put out there in states like Ohio, Tennessee, Missouri, Alabama, and the rest will impact the willingness of some people to play for cities in those jurisdictions. Values matter a lot, guys, and this is a much larger consideration for players and their families than a lot of fans want to acknowledge.
Duchene is a player who now has the power and ability to choose where he wants to go. My prediction is it is more likely he signs with a new team or resigns in Ottawa than stays in Columbus because it is a) closer to his hometown and family b) he was more complementary to Ottawa's players and staff in his public statements than CBJ outside of Uber-gate, and c) there will be a deeper pool of prospects and future growth potential than in Columbus given the fire sale that's happened just to make it to where CBJ did this year.
Sorry, all, I know the truth hurts, but it would be in your interest to just let him walk and keep your pick next season than to have him in the fold. You don't want to end up like we did when we acquired him with no potential top-6 forward or d man being drafted to your team after the basement tire fire that will ensue next year after losing your top 3-4 players

oh my. players don't want to play in anti-abortion states. That's.... the first I've heard that one.
I could swear I came across an article recently that Duchene is a bible thumper too. He may not be as pro-choice as that guy seems to think. |

because going to a neighboring state would be too expensive for a pro athlete |
