As I write this both teams are just now hitting the ice for warmups. I am not a huge believer in trying to get a read from warmups, but sometimes it is interesting to note the subtle differences you can see.
I like to look at the sharpness of the passes mostly. The little passes players make to each other as they circle and go to flick puck into an empty net. How well the passes are made and received. The general speed at which players are moving can sometimes be telling...
This may mean nothing, but here is my take.
I can better judge the Flyers since I have seen this team take warmups hundreds of times. The Flyers passes are very crisp tonight. They do appear focused and more confident than usual.
The Canadiens are much quicker however...they are doing their drills at much more uptempo pace. However the general skating players, the guys who do mini-laps from side board to side board between the blue line and center line are all Flyers.
Guys do this usually while the general "shooting gallery" line takes its slapshots at the goalies. Only a few Habs are doing these laps.. Hamrlik and Spacek mostly, for the Flyers, Leino, Briere, Giroux, Krajicek, Carcillo and Coburn.
I am not sure how one would analyze this, but it feels more like a release of nervous energy. Players who don't want to wait for their turn in the shooting line.
I have noticed often the team who needs the game generally stay out longer. In game four of the last series The Bruins were almost completely off the ice before any Flyers players had left. In general the Flyers stay out longer than most teams who visit here. But not tonight. Tonight the Habs stayed out longer...
Anyway...it all might mean squat! who knows?

Rick Rude was ahead of his time. today wrestlers talk to the audience to try and get a reaction and its obvious but Rick talked because he just wanted the men to "keep the noise down while he showed the women what a real man was supposed to look like". Combination of true tough guy with the pornstar look and charisma to back it up !!! Rick Rude Deserves the honor and Seriously he deserves A hall of Fame Induction! Hit Da music! If you did not grow up in the 80's, you won't understand. Talent like that was so underpaid at the time . I actually got a thread on him when he died somewhere on this site! - dellio

Being a fan of the most storied franchise in pro sports isn't being arrogant - It's a choice. You're the one who's arrogant if you refuse to admit that the Canadiens are different than other clubs.
I never said that we (Habs fans) are any better than other fans or that our team is better - I merely said that our team is different because it's the only one in the history of the sport with such a rich history.
Get over yourself. - Discofunk

I'm going to answer the more pertinent points of this debate in another post, but I wanted to specifically talk about your claim of the Tour of California being a "warm up" to the Tour de France and that it was the end of a leg. You might not be interested in this, but here's a cycling education for you [ ]
This race used to be in February, but consistently poor weather and the lack of high caliber riders willing to participate at that time of year caused them to move it to May for the first time, putting it in direct competition of the Giro d'Italia (Tour of Italy) which always got the best riders and was essentially a "warm-up" to the Tour in France. So, the fact that three of the top four finishers of last year's Tour de France are competing at this year's Tour of Califonia speaks volumes to the quality of the race and how highly regarded it is in the world of cycling.
As far as it being a "warm up"...isn't the regular season just a warm up to the playoffs, don't we as hockey fans care about what happens in the regular season? Aren't we interested in the pre-season to see how a team gels together? if they can find chemistry together? As much as cycling is an individual sport it is also a team sport as each member fulfills a certain role on the team to achieve success. Kind of like in hockey when a player might not score the goals but they do all the little things right to give others the opportunity to score and achieve a team victory. Tours like this are a wonderful opportunity for teams to gel together and figure out what works best for them so that when the Tour (playoffs) roll around, they're firing on all cylinders.
Finally, each stage in a cycling race is a race in and of itself. The top three finishers are all awarded a signifigant monetary prize for their efforts and while there can only be one winner of the Tour of California/Italy/Fance/etc, there are several riders who ride with the intention of just winning one stage. For example Marc Cavendish, will NEVER win a Tour, but he is a heck of a sprinter and it's his goal to win every sprint stage possible and rack up as many sprint points to win the sprinters jersey (Each Tour declares a an overall winner, a sprint winner, a climber winner and an under-25 winner and each leader wears a special jersey to designate it during the race.). So yes, stage victories can be just as gratifying and satisfying as tour victories. |

Yea, it's a bad contract, but again, if you can get what you feel is fair value for taking on that contract, you do the deal.
Kaberle for Campbell, Beach/Buff, and a 1st might be enticing enough... maybe a bit more... it is a (frank)ing bad contract
7.14M for Campbell really is madness.
actually, thinking about it, there's no way Burke trades for him... he's made it clear that he doesn't like long contracts or big contracts unless it's for superstars. - Feeling Glucky?

your point?
Phaneuf is a far better defender, signed for less time at a lower cap hit and is younger... just because the nucks fan tried to be smart doesn't mean he is.

You proposed one of the worst trades ever proposed on hockeybuzz, it's actually rather impressive. That was my point.
Campbell and Phaneuf are both overpaid but you can try and justify your Burke point if you want.
That's fine, you have your opinion, others see it differently. |

I know you are happy because this magical time of year is upon us. That time when you can take the time to tell us how great the leafs will be via some intangibles like "gelling" or "pushing each other" or "competitiveness" and there is absolutely 0% chance that the team will step on the ice tomorrow and prove you wrong.
Fans like you did it last year when the team you described as "vastly improved" sold the future only to see themselves plummet even further in the standings. Did you make mention of how Kessel would see his goal production drop (but I thought he was young and only getting better? I thought he was NOT a product of Savard?) What about your captain-in-waiting who has gone from 60-45-30 points and from a lock for team Canada to a spectator at the Olympics? Shall we attach some intangibles to them too?
What about a year ago when every possible name was being thrown out for that #7 pick except for the guy who was actually chosen... now he becomes the chosen one. Like I said, it just goes on and on.
Laugh at the Habs if you will but consider this. These last three seasons will appear nowhere in the Habs history as great teams. Yet somehow they did something the Leafs have never done - finish first in a conference - and this post season they matched the crowning achievement of winning two whole playoff rounds; crowning in that it represents the most rounds the Leafs have ever won ....ever.
When a little patch of Hab mediocrity represents what would be historic for the Leafs it is probably time for you to stop chirping. But meh, who am I to rob you of this - the greatest time of year for leaf fans!

it's nowhere near a bad trade for Chicago. Buff has never hit 40 points in the NHL, the 1st is 29th/30th, and Campbell is a massive overpayment without being as good as Kaberle. The Leafs are taking on over 10M in salary while giving up the best player, and allowing the Hawks to actually ice a team next season.
yea, horrible trade. |

For the record, I wouldn't trade Byfuglien for Kaberle straight up. It's not all about points. |
