You're right, they gave up their first and third round picks for 2016.

it will probably be 4 or 5 years until the leafs are competitive, with how they draft they will probably miss on a bunch of these picks

You forget that they'd dumped their scouts? You miss the draft last year?

the leafs dumped all their scouts and rearranged their scouting department last year, saying they have a terrible record is a bit premature as they've only had one draft to dissect. I think what they picked has progressed nicely. They picked a high skill player in the mid rounds and the leading dman in the whl. Still to early to know how they turn out, but early signs are encouraging.

With hunter in the fold leading the scouting departments, and all the new additions the leafs are believed to have one of the better scouting dept now

By leaf fans, when comparing to past leaf scouting departments .................. but still a little to early to say their peers think along the same lines.

Must admit the leafs looked quicker last night than in the past, but a lot of small fast players that can't all make the team, but can be traded for "role" players that will be needed.

You not paying attention?

Leafs hired Hunter. Several insiders have said he's a top notch talent evaluator. This is not just leaf fans.

They've hired several south that were identified as top notch scouts, including the wings European scout.

Hunter was a good evaluator of players for his Junior team ................. he does not have a track record of evaluating Junior Players for the NHL quite yet, give him a few years before you anoint him as the god of the draft.

Who are these "insiders" you speak of?

Right, which is my point. You just finished saying the leafs scouting department sucks.... I'm telling you they revamped their department and hired a lot of highly thought of and well respected talent evaluators.

I think you are right. The Leafs have acquired some very nice pieces. Matthews is the exception (and a good one) in their drift towards smaller, quick, elite players. A lot of the league is now shafting in the image of Patrick Kane. But, size does matter especially in the playoffs.

More important I think we can now officially declare the decade of "Leaf Agony" as officially over.

Yeah, perhaps the "Agony" is over ........... now it's a long patient 4 to 5 season wait before they become a serious playoff competitor and then MAYBE a Cup contender, if they can keep all the piece they want to, together on the team for a few seasons.

Comments like this from Sens fans make me laugh right now. The Sens core is nowhere good enough to compete. Ever. It won't happen. So, they're going to have to rebuild. So, if it's a 4 to 5 year estimate for the Leafs, if the Sens started to today, it's a 7 to 8 year estimate for the Sens. But they won't. I doubt they do, even at the end of this year, which will undoubtedly be another failure of a season. So, 4 to 5 year timeframe for the Leafs to be a serious playoff competitor, when I hear that from a Sens fan, I just think, "you poor guys, they've got a decade to go, before they stand a chance at doing anything".

the sens rebuild started in 2011..they are primed and ready to soar to the middle of the NHL..maybe a few spots higher

Yeah, well, this is what I'm saying. Turris, Bobby ryan, Derrick Brassard, Mark Stone, Karlsson, Phaneuf, Anderson.

Nowhere remotely close to the kind of roster that wins a cup. Not in the same hemisphere. Compare it against cup winners. Cup winners are better at every single position.

So, they really need a tear down. But they won't. So, they're basically about 3 or 4 years behind the Leafs. And that margin is growing.

TBH, all teams that arent winning cups are technically rebuilding .Or tweaking.Ottawa is just one of those teams

Meh if we were to get lucky, and say one of the two promising centers we drafted in White or Brown .Develop into what is projected for them, then we may be closer to contender sooner.A front line center that can push Turris down in the number 2 slot .Makes us a very dangerous team my friend

Neither Brown nor White project into a top 10 NHL centre. You need something like that, plus another top winger, and potentially DMan too, to become a contender.

White or Brown meeting projections does not make you a contender. I doubt White AND Brown exceeding expectations actually does it.
