I think you misunderstood. I was saying you show more gratitude to the people that allow you to have the franchise you're a fan of.

I bet Kansas city would be more grateful.

The leafs did not want Hamilton to have a team, so they blocked them over twenty years ago from getting an expansion franchise, and would have done so, for the Ottawa group, but could not.

The NHL saw the wisdom of bringing back Ottawa, along with their past Stanley Cups and History, to the present day NHL.

To bad leaf fans, there is another NHL team in Ontario, and one that has, hands down, been the better of the two for the past decade.

BTW, the real leaf fans in toronto are the ones you see standing out in front of the ACC watching video screens, while corporate big-shots and their clients buy up all the seats inside. You should thank them for keeping the leafs in toronto, as the average fan could not afford to pay the seat fee, league high season ticket prices and the league high concession prices.............otherwise the leafs would have priced themselves out of toronto years ago and moved to Seattle or Cleveland.

If the leafs didn't want Ottawa there, they wouldn't be there.

You're avoiding the the point. Sens fans should be more appreciative that the leafs enable them to have a team.

Quite a few other stupid comments there. You assume many of the corporate people buying tickets are not leaf fans. In reality they are leaf fans with money. I understand why you might not equate a hockey fan to a successful person as its not the case in Ottawa, but I assure you a lot of those in suits are big leaf fans. But I find it funny that you somehow prefer having not enough fans to fill a building over fans in suits.

The leafs did NOT want Ottawa to re-join the NHL and bring with it, it's Stanely Cuo winning history.

The leafs wanted ALL of Ontario broadcast rights, but it was NOT within their power to block the Ottawa expansion bid, only Hamilton's.

The leafs have blocked Senator midweek broadcast's into the GTA and Southern Ontario for over twenty years now, in fear of losing market share to the better team.

Clearly.

I don't even understand the whole "leafs didn't want the sens to bring their stanley cup history back to the NHL" even means. Delusional much??

And considering the Leafs don't control broadcasting, the League dictates where the regions are and what can and cant be show where....... saying the Leafs tried to block Sens games from being broadcast into Toronto and Southern Ont is just clueless stupidity.

I remember it clearly, as if it happened yesterday.

When the Senators re-joined the NHL, they set up a deal with broadcasters to air their weekday games in the Ottawa market (Eastern Ontario) and in Montreal's market, and Montreal were allowed to air their weekday broadcasts into Ottawa's market..............this made business sense as it increased each teams broadcast revenues (more eyeballs for advertisers).

The Senators tried to set up a similar broadcast deal with the leafs who promptly rejected it.

This ended weekday leaf game broadcasts into Eastern Ontario and all the local leaf fans whined about it assuming it was the Senators who blocked the leaf games..........BUT it was the leafs who did want to allow Senator games into the GTA and Southern Ontario.

The leafs did not care about leaf fans in Eastern Ontario, and cut them adrift.

Notice how Wikipedia has a separate entry for that team, and how many of those cups were "won" prior to the existence of the NHL... And how at least one cup they kinda just awarded themselves?

Sad when you need to rely on a team that doesn't exist anymore, and hasn't exisred for 8 decades to talk up about the current poop show. Guess it's better than facing reality.

Edit: only one cup since the NHL took over the competition.

The league controls what region is what and who can broadcast where.

I guess the NHL figured if they didn't give the fans a choice, the sens might actually be able to stick around this time.

It was because toronto did not want to do the exact same deal Ottawa made with Montreal, that forced the NHL's hand into dividing Ontario into two markets.

I can view ALL Ottawa and ALL Montreal games right here in Ottawa, and can't watch ANY leaf regional games, even if I wanted too.

I have a diehard leaf fan that I golf with, who lives in the Perth area, and he can't even get leaftv from Belltv, since it's inception. (don't know about this season)

Honest Question – if the Senators can’t get a proper audience in Ottawa already, why would opening up to Toronto help?

You ZERO clue of what you're talking about.

I've lived and worked with Montreal and toronto fans for over 35 years in Ottawa.

When the Senators rejoined the NHL they made the deal I described with the Canadiens, and were turned down by the leafs when they were offered the same deal.

Then that is when the NHL stepped in and separated the Ontario market in two, Eastern and Southern, ans it's been that way ever since.

The leaf fans I worked with read the accounts of this in the news media, and have been whining about it for almost 25 years now.

Hab fans in Ottawa are happy, their team's games, all 82 are allowed in the Ottawa market.

You have no clue of what you're talking about. I've been talking about the reciprocal rights deal Ottawa and Montreal made, and what the leafs refused.

Get this through your head, ALL 82 Montreal games are STILL allowed on the Ottawa air waves, even to this day.

Blackout of Sens games in Toronto - why?

NyQuil 11-24-2006, 09:21 PM
In the early days of our team, we claimed, under the terms of our Expansion Agreement with the NHL, exclusive mid-week broadcasting rights in our Franchise Territory (the boundaries of the Corporation of the City of Ottawa plus 50 miles).

Montréal and Toronto were obviously affected by this—they had been broadcasting their games into Ottawa for many years.

We did a deal with Ron Corey, then President of the Canadiens, to permit reciprocal rights—Montréal could broadcast their mid-week games into Ottawa at no cost but Ottawa could broadcast Sens games into Montréal, again at no cost. This obviously favored the 1992/93 eventual Stanley Cup Champion Canadiens who, you would have to say, would have had a lot more fans in Ottawa than the Sens would have had in Montréal, n’est-ce pas? Whatever.

Well, do you think the Leafs would do the same deal? No way. They not only refused a deal on reciprocal rights, their broadcaster (not to mention any names but I’ll give you a hint—it’s a global enterprise), backed by the Leafs said they would ignore the Franchise Agreement and continue to broadcast their games into Ottawa, so there. One might say this was a bully tactic. Their broadcaster used the excuse that they couldn’t break their over-the-air broadcast signal, so it was just a little technical glitch but overwhelming in its complexity. Sure.

With the help of the NHL, this tactic amounted to zip—they did have to break their transmission so instead of Leaf fans in Ottawa watching their team, they got The Mating Habits of African Beetles and other such interesting documentaries throughout the Season. You can imagine the furor that caused amongst Ottawa-based Leaf fans.

Of course, we got blamed for it—Toronto-dominated media interests never seemed to be able to point out that Montréal games were still on the air and that hockey fans in general were benefiting by the approach taken by those two clubs…

You've proven nothing that repudiates what I've been saying all along.

- Senators and Canadiens struck a reciprocal rights deal to allow each others mid week games to be broadcast into each others markets starting with the 1992-93 season.

-Canadiens mid week are still allowed in the Ottawa market

- Senators approached the leafs with the same reciprocal rights deal, and the leafs refused, and that's when mid week leaf game were no longer available on tv, in the Eastern Ontario market

-leaf midweek games AND leafsTV still not available in Ottawa market.

the leaf mid week games back before the 1992 93 season used to be carried on Global............I know I saw them with my own eyes, can't see them now as they're not available.

These are the facts, and if you lived here, Ottawa, you would probably know this. Anyone else here in the Nations Capital can tell you the same thing.
