No. Because the NHL, by request of the Ottawa senators, disallowed the broadcasting of leafs games in the senators region, knowing that they would never be able to compete for the English speaking Ontario audience. To this day, they even choose to play weekend games in the afternoon, to avoid competing with the nationally televised leaf games.

The NHL sets the markets, however, the Owners run the NHL through Bettman. When a couple of owners make a deal that is mutually beneficial, they inform the NHL, and situations like the shared market deal between Ottawa and Montreal, are enforced.

Prior to 1992 93 Montreal and toronto shared Eastern Ontario, and we in Ottawa would receive Montreal & leafs "local" or "regional" games, some on the same night.

But that changed when the NHL in it's wisdom, re-admitted the Ottawa Senators, one of the original Four NHL teams.

Ottawa and Montreal share everything East of Belleville/Pembroke right to St. Johns NFLD.


Detroit Shares a partial region with the Hawks and the Blues, the Hurricanes partially share with the Preds just to point out a few besides the Ottawa/Montreal shared region.


Point being that SMART owners know how to sell the NHL in their markets to the mutual benefit of both both or more teams.

Do you not think Detroit would like to have access to Windsor and the surrounding area?
Do you not think Buffalo would like to have access to St. Catharines and Hamilton?

It would be a a money making proposition for sure for Both Detroit and Buffalo.

Well perhaps that’s tied to your first question. Maybe they don’t want to sell too many tickets to Leaf fans, as that is conducive to an atmosphere of Leaf fans outnumbering Sens fans in their own building, and that makes it feel like more of a home game for the Leafs. I can see that hindering many converting over to Sens fans. That, and the Sens have never won a playoff series against the Leafs. Without any major wins over them, I’d think that would keep Leaf fans from switching over.

Interesting though, I’d say the Sens trying to restrict Leaf fans from buying tickets to their games, very closely aligns to them refusing to allow Leaf games to be broadcast in Ottawa.
