Ran it 31 times. Sens won 6 times, (frank)ing Minny won 3 times, Toronto won once.

It actually makes sense for the league to give it to Ottawa though. At least Toronto has some star players.

How do you think they should run the "new" lottery? Should it be behind closed doors and revealed at later time, as in the past? They can't do the count down thing when any team, in the lottery can now win.

Won't be done in the open, but it should be.

I'm still not a fan of how the lottery works. They should have a system in place where a high finish(in terms of picks) reduces your chances at winning the lottery in the future.

So a team that end's up picking high in a couple of drafts, and still sucks enough to finish last overall, gets a lesser chance of picking first overall, because they've had their chance(s) and should not have another?

The way I'd see it, you have a weighted lottery, with the weighting the inverse of the final standings.

Lets say the worst team gets 50 balls, the best non-playoff team gets 34.

If you win 1st overall, you lose 10 balls in the next 5 drafts. winning 2nd you lose 9. 3rd you lose 8, etc. No team that finishes outside of the top-10 loses anything, and no team can have a negative amount of balls. Any team that makes the playoffs has the counter reset for the next time they win.

This way, teams that suck one year have the greatest chance of winning the lottery, less opportunity to game the system, and an incentive to get back to the playoffs ASAP

So this season let's say the Sabres win the lottery, and have a "milbury moment" and trade their pick for whatever reason..........do they lose 10 balls (for the next 10 drafts) or does the team that traded for their pick, lose theirs?

I said 5 drafts, not 10.

And I'd say they take the penalty, since they traded the pick after winning the lottery.

If they were to trade the pick before winning the lottery, the team that winds up winning the lottery with that pick would take the penalty

Yeah, 5 drafts, my mistake.

So could teams trade all or some of their balls, to another team, even a playoff team, that wants to increase their chances of winning the lottery?

Do you remember the Crosby Draft?

They changed the rules for that draft, after the lost season, and every team had a shot at him...............but he ended up in a failing market, with one of the oldest arenas in the NHL, and ownership looking around for another market to move to as the City was not cooperating with them in their attempts to build a new one.

So why not hold the lottery up front in full view?

While every team had a shot, not every team had an equal shot. Crosby went to the team that was tied with only 3 others that had the highest % chance of getting him.

And as a consequence, the NHL survived in Pittsburgh, as the franchise was close to moving at the time. Quite a coincidence eh?

The problem with a "public lottery" is that (a) you have to start with the #1 pick and work down, which is less dramatic and (b) since The worst team will have 40 of 200 balls (20% chance) if they win the top pick there is a possibility that the next 39 balls to come out could be theirs. While the next 39 is HIGHLY unlikely, theirs would remain the most likely ball to come out for much of the draft; hardly dramatic, or even interesting.

The key is having a reputable accounting firm conduct and certify the draft; perhaps with the video of the entire thing made available after the results are announced for anyone who wants to watch to confirm nothing was rigged.

This is a good point. Nobody wants to watch somebody fish out a bunch of balls from a cage after every pick

They had the best shot at winning. In fact, one of the big reasons they got Crosby is because the year prior, they lost the Ovechkin draft despite finishing 30th overall.

No conspiracy, things just worked out very well for them.

They didnt play a season ,how do we know Pittsburgh would have been the worst team in the league. You are nuts if you dont think the league works the draft according to need ,Arz has cost the league millions ,they cant get out of the lease .And they need to drum up support ,not to mention help those brave new owners that just bought the yotes.Teams like ott, tor, edm etc dont need the first overall and a potential franchise center to make money

What are you talking about?????

Having the Lottery run in public, on TSN, would be so easy.

You have a representative from each team (GM) walk up to the Drum, dump in their teams balls, and after all the balls are in the machine switch it on, wait for 30 seconds and then open the hatch (or whatever) to allow one ball to exit to reveal the winner of the lottery.

Don't know how that could be explained any easier.

What I meant was, in the 03-04' season, Pittsburgh finished 30th overall. But they picked #2 instead. Due to this, they did not lose a ball in the Crosby lottery. Had they won it like they statistically should have, they would have lost a ball and had 2 in the Crosby lottery.

And you just said Edmonton doesn't need a first overall pick. They just won 3 first overalls in a row.
