Timonen is going to retire after this year and play at home for the club he owns.

hunch, nothing more.

Not that I want to loose Timo, but that would be probably the best scenario that could happen...team gets cap space without pissing off the collective. I am assuming your theory includes Timo retiring with some new jewlry!!!

He is still under contract for 5 mill for 2011. It would really help the Flyers cap situation but I can't remember the last time a player retired while making that much money that wasn't caused by medical issues?

Yes of course.

Too be honest the day he signed and I saw the contract I mentioned on here that I bet he retires after this season because it's front loaded like a football contract. Now look at how front loaded everything is, the Flyers were ahead of the game somewhat.

He'd still be leaving lots of money on the table but Timonen made a ton in these 4 years and I have a feeling there is a gentlemen's agreement that he walks.

Again no basis whatsoever for this, just a hunch I've had from day 1.

I thought it went down more then that, maybe it is after next season I was thinking when it went down to $3 million?

I doubt he walks from $5 million, got my years mixed up.

They almost need him to go if they want to sign everyone next year.
If carter gets 6.5, say Leino/Giroux get JVR's 1.6M and Carcillo/Powe/Zerdev average out to 20% raises, they will be over the cap and still need to sign a goalie.

Next off season is going to be rough

I think Giroux getting 1.6M next year is a pipe dream. If he has a solid year, he's looking at double that. At the very least.

I don't disagree, but in a perfect scenario for the flyers, they are already screwed in terms of cap space next year.
If Leino, Giroux have regular seasons like this post season and Zerdev lives up to potential.....it could be really bad this time next year.

It certainly looks like one of Leino, Carter, Giroux, or Zherdev won't be signed. Hopefully the Flyers can figure out who they can't sign and trade them for something before the start of next years free agency.

Agreed. I have him penciled in around $3.5 million. We'll see what kind of year he has and what kind of contract he's looking for.

I'd try to get him signed now.

Point at Fillpula's contract at 5 years and $15 million.

Or Parise's who makes $3.2 I believe. Sooner the better before Giroux blows up, because he's going to. I think he'll have a good year this year but next year will be his true step to a very high level.

Well Leino and Zherdev are UFA's so they have many options.

Of those 4 Carter and Giroux are the two to keep if a decision has to be made.

Biron?

I personally think we should try to go after JSG this season. Trade carter and Hartnell and the cap will work!

- jak521

Wasn't he a salary dump last season? He may have been an upgrade in net for the Leafs, but then again even Ron Wilson could have put on pads and been an improvement over Toskala.

It was sarcastic.. he just said Marty (instead of Turco). Id be the last person to want to see Biron back in net... hell he is shakier with the puck the Michael J Fox.

Imagine if Carter puts up like 100 points, 45+ goals. We either pay big, or get rewarded big.

think Timonen or Briere would be willing to waive after this season is over?

I think both would. I share Butsy's hunch about Timonen "retiring" from the NHL next summer and either way, I expect both he and Briere to be shopped next summer.

Briere is a good player but in this cap world he's holding us back. If both were moved, then our cap woes would be solved and then some. I'd rather keep all our young kids than Briere and Timonen

I want that! The animals are kind of odd, but the beer sounds amazingly interesting.
