In his first 12 NHL seasons, Matt Cooke's perseverance and dedication to ice hockey were rarely questioned. His sportsmanship, to understate it, wasn't worthy of a Masterton Trophy nomination.
On Saturday, though, after overhauling his style of play for 2011-12, Cooke was named the Pittsburgh Penguins' nominee for the award, which goes to the NHL player that best exemplifies those three qualities
holy (frank)...unbelievable that Penguins would nominate that (frank)...dont know if NHL has any say in this, but what poop....

Bruins trade Yury Alexandrov to Islanders

The Bruins have traded Yury Alexandrov to the Islanders for future considerations. The phrase is a polite euphemism for nothing.
Alexandrov was the 37th pick of the 2006 draft. He was one of the club’s two second-round picks. The Bruins had considerably better luck with their later second-round selection, which they used to draft Milan Lucic 50th overall.
Alexandrov played for St. Petersburg SKA and Omsk Avangard of the KHL this season after playing for Providence in 2010-11. The 23-year-old defenseman had fallen on the club’s depth chart and did not figure in the organization’s plans.
Alexandrov becomes the third fringe prospect to head to Long Island in less than a month. On Feb. 27, the Bruins traded Yannick Riendeau and Marc Cantin to the Islanders for Brian Rolston and Mike Mottau.

Too early to cancel the parade?
Alexandrov was horrid in Providence. He was so bad, he'd have a hard time cracking the current lineup of dud defensemen. Maybe Chiarelli and Snow made a bet that if Rolston scored a goal, Chiarelli would give him Alexandrov
Frees up a contract space, which in itself holds more value than Alexandrov ...

He was my darkhorse pick to make the team a few years back when he came over ... boy was I wrong.
Too bad to blow a pick like that, but at the time he did look like a solid prospect, just didn't translate to the North American game very well.
