Let Kaberle go: Good move
Sign Pouliot: Good move
Corvo trade: Good move

All good moves, I like the Corvo trade the most, but not how I hoped or projected this would go down. Nothing great but nothing bad.

- gforce

All in all I have no strong emotions either way on the off-season. Get Marchand locked up and it will be a success, but so far I see it as about even. Nothing great, nothing terrible. I'll reserve judgement on Pouliot for now, and as for Corvo, I guess it could have been Pursesnatcher O'Brien.

im not losing sleep either about this...basically a salary dump to not sign Kaberle and Ryder and got some cheap players in return...

freeing up $ for next year UFA's and $ needed to sign our own guys...I wouldnt like $8 million tied up long term for Ryder and Kaberle (although always liked Ryder)

Yeah, exactly. I think it's a good and more than fair trade for us. Was hoping against hope that he'd find a way to get a major talent for the available cap space for this year but I guess it's not there to be had right now.

Still some room for a big talent through trade after things shake out I guess. A little disappointing, I thought we'd do better on the back end to start the year.

Ever read the Avs blog on here? Poor Hunwick is getting the #6 treatment in Denver.

Bridge-gap moves ...

Pouliot and Corvo are rentals, more or less. Pouliot with the more obvious potential upside.

Not really liking that we go from having a Recchi in the room to a Corvo

I hope the guy plays well but from past viewings, he sucks balls and is a huge defensive liability.
He is a mutation of alberts and wideman...skill.. and dumb as a a (frank)ing shrub

Yeah, you're right, I had the count wrong.

Had in mind a couple big big acquisitions, one long-term and one short.
Still time and money left for later, just hoping it gets used for major talent at some point. I want domination goddammit.

I haven't heard that he's a trouble maker in the room, despite what the incident would imply about his character. Could still use a vet F and leader in the mold of a Doan, if its out there to be had. Don't really see an obvious Old Balls replacement out there at the moment though ... unless you count Owen Nolan.

why?

i wasnt aware of that restaurant issue which obviously is not great...issues about him off ice since that time?

dont know tons about him, but always seemed decent on ice with shot from point (which we need)...not bad puck mover...have to admit I didnt watch enough games of him to speak about defensive game, but if anyone can improve him, perhaps that is Claude...

- busher

The fact that he likes to shoot will be a much welcomed change and improvement over Raymond. And you're right ... If anyone can bring out more defensive responsibility, it's Cloooooooooode.

Chiarelli being very responsible about keeping space open to start re-signing the core after next season, which is good...

Bad thing is that to me, at least, we look worse on paper right now ...

Just need to re-up Marchand now and the rest will sort itself out ...

I hope it works out, he has the talent and maybe playing with better players will make him less of a (frank)ing idiot with the puck.

No way I wanted Kaberle back for the $$ and term Carolina gave him...good move on letting him move on.

Need to count on / hope for some improvement from within. Seguin, Caron, Marchand, Kampfer, McQuaid, Boychuk. If we get some growth there we'll be at least on par. Peverley full season replaces what Ryder brought. We didn't have Kaberle for most of the season and he wasn't that good anyways. Old Balls is a hole in leadership but let's face it, production wise him gone and someone who can actually keep pace with the play and not make random blind passes to the opposition may actually be an upgrade on the ice.

a 40 pt dman for a 4th rounder making only slightly north of $2m?

Good deal imo. It's probably as good as it gets under those circumstances for a PMD, PP guy. He will make his mistakes in his own end, but hopefully he can be hidden or incorporated into our defensive structure. Kaberle was a (frank)ing disaster at twice the price and we won the cup. I think this will turn into a decent deal for us.

All good points ...

And there is little doubt that Corvo will make our powerplay a lot better than Raymond made it ...

Anyone else concerned that bringing in guys like Pouilot and Corvo is changing the character of the team for the worse?

For (frank)s sake ... Pouilot is a piece of poop and Corvo is a wifebeater.

WTF is going on here? What's next, trade for Carcillo?

I think there is enough leadership and character to keep the team mentality together without Rex. Bergeron, Thornton, Ference and Chara won't let a dippoop like Pouliot ruin the room. They are both marginal players on this team and shouldn't be to the forefront to dictate anything besides being passaengers on the ride.

Yeah I don't think Recchi's shoes need filling in any form personally. Can't think of any leadership combo I'd sooner have than Z and Bergy. I think if your top guys have quality character then the team will follow. Z, Bergy, TT, Thornton, Kelley, Seidenberg, Campbell, Ference -- all veterans who set the standard.

Hopefully the core and leadership group is strong enough to get them in line.
