The existing Northeast division would be expanded to include the league's two Florida-based teams, making a conference of: Boston, Buffalo, Florida, Montreal, Ottawa, Tampa Bay and Toronto.
Meanwhile, the existing Atlantic Division would gain two teams for a seven-team conference including: Carolina, New Jersey, the New York Islanders, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Washington.
The Central Division would be modified to form a conference of Mid-Western teams including: Chicago, Columbus, Dallas, Detroit, Minnesota, Nashville, St. Louis, and Winnipeg.
The three Canadian teams from the Northwest Division would join a proposed Western Conference including: Anaheim, Calgary, Colorado, Edmonton, Los Angeles, Phoenix, San Jose and Vancouver.
The realignment is aimed at evening out the travel schedules for all NHL teams with each team playing teams outside their conference twice per year, once at home and on the road.
In the seven-team Conferences, teams would play six times -- three home, three away. In the eight-team Conferences, a bit more manoeuvering would be required.
Teams in the conferences of eight would play either five or six times per season on a rotating basis; three teams would play each other six times and four teams would play each other five times. This process would reverse each season.
The top four teams in each Conference would qualify for the playoffs. The first-place team would play the fourth-place team; the second-place team would play the third-place team. The four respective Conference champions would meet in the third round of the Playoffs, with the survivors playing for the Stanley Cup.
The division winners would be re-seeded for the Conference Finals based on regular season points totals. This opens up the possibility that two teams that are currently in the same conference could conceivably play each other in the Stanley Cup Final.

i would have swapped the islanders and rags for the two florida teams.
almost makes it a bit unfair to have the rags, isles and devils in same conference when they are all driving distance. |

i think with the parity of the league that they should have taken this opportunity to add 2 more teams to the playoffs
nothing will be perfect but I like that teams in the same conference can play in the finals like they used to |

Boucher is fine ... The goaltending down there is much more problematic, IE, Yzerman moved the wrong goaltender and now Rollie and Garon are sh!tting the bed.
Still ... 5 points out of a playoff spot isn't too worrisome 1/4 of the way through the season, is it? |

Smith definitely played his way out of town last season, but him playing so well this season stings a bit.
If they had good goaltending (like when Rollie first came to Tampa), they'd be a different team. |

Theo Fleury discovers his lost Stanley Cup ring on Craigslist
By Greg Wyshynski
Former NHL star Theo Fleury has led, shall we say, an eventful life. Losing his Stanley Cup ring while playing in an outdoor hockey game, and then having it miraculously appear on an online classified site's lost and found section, is the latest surreal chapter.
Theo Fleury discovers his lost Stanley Cup ring on Craigslist
Fleury was part of the Cagary, er, Calgary Flames alumni team that faced the Montreal Canadiens during the Heritage Classic back in February at McMahon Stadium. At some point during the weekend, Fleury's 1989 Stanley Cup ring — the alumni game was a reunion of sorts for that Flames team — fell out of his pocket and disappeared.
Fast forward nearly 10 months, and the ring apparently has reappeared — on Calgary's Craigslist site under the lost and found header.
From Eric Francis of the Calgary Sun, who broke the news:
The poster of the message had a Craigslist email address for the site's users to respond to — something Fleury suggested in a brief text exchange he was very likely intending to do. "We're on it," Fleury wrote. "I lost it at the Heritage Classic. It fell out of my pocket."
Fleury's only Cup win in 15 years of NHL service came in 1989 when he was a rookie with the Flames.
The miraculous part of this tale isn't that the ring was found, wherever it might have been dropped. The miraculous part is that it ended up on the lost and found section rather than the "for sale" section; or on eBay for that matter. |
