2016 NFL Draft outlook…

You cannot find an NFL Draft analyst that does not have A’Shawn Robinson in the first round of their mock drafts. I guarantee that he will not wind up in our top 32 prospects overall…I don’t know that he’ll end up among our draftable prospects in our top 200 rankings. Be that as it may, I have no doubt that he will go in the first round of the 2016 NFL draft because ‘Alabama’.

If I were an NFL GM, knowing A’Shawn Robinson is going in the first round, worst-case early second round – I have absolutely no plans of selecting him. I am just sitting around waiting to laugh at whoever does take him.

NFL Outlook: A’Shawn Robinson’s NFL career will likely be irrelevant. At best, he is a warm body that can take up space in an emergency…for a team beset by injuries to their starters. Outside of that, you’re not likely to hear much from this guy, nor is he going to help turn a defense to the next level.

Laquon Treadwell:

Most football analysts project Treadwell to be the #1 wide receiver taken, and to go in the top 20 overall. However, I hear whispers that most NFL personnel departments don’t see Treadwell as a first-round wide receiver either…but they’re keeping up the chatter hoping to suck in some other team to make this silly pick. And make no mistake, many NFL personnel decisions come from general consensus of national analysts – groupthink…safety in numbers of being wrong together. Most national websites get the draft prospects ranked pretty correctly versus where they get taken, because they are the tail that wags the dog in the NFL. So as much as I am flabbergasted that anyone could see Treadwell as a first-round pick, I have no doubt that some team is going to fall for it – Los Angeles Rams at #15, I’m looking at you.

If I were an NFL GM, I know Treadwell is going in the top 40 overall. I definitely don’t have him as a top 40 Prospect. I doubt he’ll even be a top 150 Prospect for CFM. I’d rather make a trade for Jeremy Butler than draft Treadwell. Hell, if you think he’s the next Anquan Boldin…I could sign Anquan Boldin in free agency right now, and have a proven and experienced version of this.

NFL Outlook: I would project that Laquon Treadwell goes on to have a very mediocre, if not disappointing NFL career…from the perspective that there will be so much hype, and he just cannot live up to it. In the end, I think he has closer to a disappointing Rueben Randle-like career than he does anywhere approaching a successful run like Alshon Jeffery.

Emmanuel Ogbah....

I’m stunned to see Ogbah with as many second-round mock draft projections. It’s insane. ESPN has him #43, and behind Kevin Dodd. CBS has him #30, fifth among all DE prospects. How Jadeveon Clowney drew such media attention, and Ogbah gets none of that…it’s criminal. However, the media usually runs the draft, so I expect Ogbah to be overlooked to some degree. In the end, I have to believe someone in the NFL wakes up and take him in the top 25. He should be in the top 10 overall.

If I were an NFL GM, I’m having serious meetings about how to acquire Emmanuel Ogbah in this draft. In the world desperate for pass-rushers, here’s a very high-end prospect that’s likely to fall past pick #20, possibly into the second round. The value is fantastic. Some NFL team is going to trade around to snag the Ogbah middle-to-late first round, and it will go down in history as a terrific maneuver.

NFL Outlook: I think Ogbah is going to start pretty quickly in the NFL, jumping right in as a pass-rush specialist. You want him as your 4-3 scheme defensive end. Just let him attack the backfield at will. I think Ogbah will be a 10+ sack per year guy for most of his prime NFL years.

Here are Bosa’s performance numbers versus upper-level opponents:

3.5 tackles, 0.50 TFLs, 0.25 sacks per game = in 4 bowl games/playoffs (Clemson, Alabama, Oregon, Notre Dame)

2.6 tackles, 0.40 TFLs, 0.20 sacks per game = in 5 career games vs. Michigan State and Wisconsin

4.2 tackles, 1.60 TFLs, 0.82 sacks per game = in all his other games less the ones mentioned above



Bosa has 26.0 career sacks. Over half (13.5) of them have taken place in his games vs. Illinois (5.0), Penn State (3.5), Rutgers (3.0), and Maryland (2.0).

In the 2014–15 season national title run for OSU, from the Big Ten title game to the two playoff wins…in that three-game stretch, Bosa averaged 3.0 tackles, 0.33 TFLs, and 0.0 sacks per game.

Keep in mind with all these performance numbers…Bosa is working the easier side of the D-Line vs. the lesser blocking, and is rarely double-teamed (there’s not need to).



Bosa had the 12th-fastest 40-time among the DE prospects at the NFL Combine. He would have been 20th in the 2015 class. The 2016 class is pretty slow by comparison, top to bottom. The saving grace for Bosa is that he ran the second-fastest three-cone drill in 2016…fifth-best if looking at the 2015 NFL Combine DE prospects.





The NFL DE prospect that Joey Bosa most compares with statistically in college, within our system:

Joey Bosa compares to several good, but not great NFL players. Guys you’re happy to have as part of the team, but when it comes time for major contract renewal they won’t be top priorities for a team to bring back. They are very good, useful players, but none of them are deserving of a top-five overall draft pick status or ‘franchise player’ moniker.

I saw someone debating Bosa as a J.J. Watt-type of prospect…I don’t even have words for that. It’s apples and hand grenades for a comparison.

You rarely find a mock draft that doesn’t have Bosa in the top five overall. Analysts had Bosa as their top guy two years ago, and they are not letting go of that without a fight…facts, data, and videotape be damned. With all his prospect momentum built over two years, I cannot see how he won’t be a top five overall pick on draft day.

If I were an NFL GM, I would see Joey Bosa as one of the main reasons to trade back out of the top five overall…a sign of just how weak this draft class is for top prospects. There was nothing about Joey Bosa that screams ‘franchise player’. He’s good. He’ll be fine, I’m sure. Is he going to radically change an NFL defense for the better once he joins it in the NFL? No way.

NFL Outlook: If Bosa is a success in the NFL it will be because of his tackle numbers/run-stopping efforts. However, I am rattled by what I’ve seen on tape with him even in the run game. Too many times against good teams do I see Bosa just shoved away from the play easily. I think his NFL career will be him as a starter right away, a guy with a lot of expectations, but then he will slowly disappoint, and in the end will be seen as a guy who never lives up to the hype. It’s unfair because he shouldn’t even have this hype to begin with.
