besides his speech impediment he was so indecisive there were times the rest of the guys had trouble not laughing at him. he's always been a stutterer and a stammerer but damn, when you're in a round table format you can't start your answers with 6 or 7 seconds of umms and wells.

i was always amazed listening to his old show for the few minutes that i could stand it. just unbelievable that anyone pays him to talk on the radio.

Charles Harris

Harris looks decent on tape. He has a nice first step. He gives a good effort. I want him to be a nice NFL player, I just don’t see it. College good, but not NFL good. He might hang around as a decent backup, but I fear that’s his upside. He’s too easily blocked by better teams, and his speed on the field is not anything that catches your eye. Has a good first step but if he doesn’t win with that against a blocker he’s cooked.

In his last 15 games, Harris has registered at least one full sack in four games. Only six of those games did he register at least one full TFL. Harris got numbers in certain games and was shut out of most others. He was not a prolific pass rusher overall in college – just in some games. If you ignore his great tally against Georgia in 2016, then his 2016 season numbers would have tallied 8.0 TFLs and 6.0 sacks in 11 games. Not elite output.

I thought the data backed me up on Markus Golden and Demarcus Lawrence, and then I saw totally different people in the NFL. If we have a blind spot in our DE prospect scouting models, then Harris is in that zone…and we’ll have to study the guys like him to find a fix for the error of our ways.

2017 NFL Draft Outlook

Charles Harris is a fringe first-round mock draft projection for most of the mainstream. I think his NFL Combine data will likely push him into the middle/late second round.

NFL Outlook: If we’re wrong, and he’s like Demarcus Lawrence and Markus Golden, then he’ll be a useful-to-very-good pass rusher for the NFL. If we’re right, he’s going to wander around as a backup-level DL/OLB for a few years.

Derek Barnett

The Derek Barnett study is a confusing one. His performance numbers in the SEC say, “Star” for the NFL…his measurables say, “No, thank you” for the NFL.

When I looked at this conflict of data on paper, I went to the tape for more clarity. I gotta tell you…I don’t see it. I think there are enough data and tape concerns here to put Barnett in the “Not willing to pay the price” category of prospect.

Barnett has enough athleticism to get to the NFL. His college performance has warranted a strong look – 10.0 or more sacks the past two seasons in the SEC. 22.0 sacks in his last 20 games. He’s producing. He has something to look at for the NFL, but I would never pay a top 10 overall or even first-round price for it.

You need look no further than his 2016 Alabama tape. You look at the box score from that game – 3 tackles, 2.0 TFLs, 1.0 sacks, 1 INT…looks pretty good, right? It wasn’t all that hot. Not to me. Not from the ‘top 10 overall’ judgment viewpoint. As soon as I turned on tape of Barnett pre-NFL Combine and then downed a bunch of it this week, I saw an ‘it’…a bad ‘it’. I fear Barnett’s just too slow of an athlete to be highly successful as a rush end at the next level. He comes up off the snap far too slow, and when he gives chase to things happening nearby he’s always a step behind/the ballcarriers are not in fear of him. I quasi-hated his tape. I wrote ‘NFL bust potential‘ as one of my notes during the tape-watching sessions.

Sure, Barnett put up numbers. He’s a good football player…he might be a ‘great’ college player and an average joe in the pros. Barnett gives effort to get to the backfield. He has better than average college speed, so he’ll beat a typical college blocker and get to the prize. He has pretty nimble feet to skate past a blocker here and there, but by and large his pass rush is pretty blockable. Offensive tackles are able to get into position by the time Barnett is finally upright and moving off the snap. Barnett does do a good job of anticipating a snap count, so he caught some OTs by surprise – and that’s how he got his sack versus Alabama. But that’s not likely to be an advantage he’ll carry to the NFL.

In addition to my two concerns (slow/4.88 40-time and slow-looking on tape), at the NFL Combine he was ‘sick’ but fought through. At his Pro Day, he talked about a hamstring issue but was going to fight through it. Either he really is a ‘gamer’ or this all seems a little odd…all these stories about him not being 100% but giving it a go anyway. Builds in an excuse for a mediocre performance. I’m not saying to take either side of the story, but if I were a top 10 prospect for people, pre-Combine, and I was really sick or close to it…and I knew I was a 4.88 runner…I’d duck out of the drills. You can only get hurt by a subpar performance at the NFL Combine (when everyone has built you up as a god). Barnett had a subpar Combine performance and now his draft stock is dropping.

Barnett is a solid citizen. He’s quiet/unassuming. I don’t think he’s what amped up defensive coordinators will like when they speak to him in meetings. He’s not a super-athlete. He’s mild-mannered and likable. He’s not the cartoon image of what D-Cs look for…so I think he’ll fall some in this draft. For me, there are too many negatives to pay a high price. Weak tape versus top opponents. Weak NFL Combine measurables. ‘Blah’ personality. I’d just pass for the price.

Derek Barnett is so productive, despite the measurables (and my tape claims) that he is grading solidly…and grades like many other DE prospects we’ve been more wrong on. A guy like Melvin Ingram is a great example – analysts say he’s the greatest, we say he’s very flawed…he goes to the NFL is ‘OK’/good. He isn’t great but he isn’t bad either. That would be my argument against Barnett – to not buy into the ‘great’ story line, but maybe price him as his upside is ‘good’.



2017 NFL Draft Outlook

I just looked at the big websites – Barnett is #14 overall on ESPN and #8 on CBS, so he still had top 15 momentum…but he’s definitely lost his top five momentum. In the end, I think measurables will cause him to drop to #15–30 overall range…and everyone will claim ‘great value’ when it happens. I just think there are far better players than Barnett to choose from in the first round.

Scouts, websites, analysts who have Barnett in the top 15 and don’t have Jordan Willis in the top 50 should be arrested for scouting fraud.

NFL Outlook: Will be useful in the NFL. Upside to ‘good’ and downside to ‘possible bust’ (because of draft status).

Gareon Conley

When I first watched basic tape of OSU teammates Gareon Conley and Marshon Lattimore ahead of the NFL Combine, I thought Conley was the better corner prospect of the two. After more research, I’m starting to walk that back a little. They are both legit NFL prospects, but I’d have to say Lattimore is the better cover corner…and is equal to or the better athlete than Conley – and they are both athletically gifted to be starters in the NFL.

Conley is rising up some draft boards after his NFL Combine – nice size (6′0″/195) and excellent speed-agility. Conley is a prototypical NFL starting corner. It helps that he has the ‘Ohio State’ label. I like Conley too, but less than I did at first glance.

Watching Conley specifically against Penn State and Clemson in 2016 started to change my mind a bit. Conley definitely has the speed-agility to keep up with those two teams’ #1 WRs, and top draft prospects, Chris Godwin and Mike Williams. But it was glaring to see how these physical WRs had no issue bumping off Conley and getting open or fighting him off for jump ball passes. Lattimore seemed to be more in control against top receivers whereas Conley showed some weakness.

There’s a place for Conley in the NFL…whether as a #2 corner or a nickel defender. Conley can cover/mirror receivers with his superior foot speed and elite agility numbers. He’s not a corner that will take on Mike Evans or Dez Bryant, etc. Not only is Conley a little weaker covering physical receivers, he’s not much of a tackler either. He makes an effort, but he’s more of a lunging/diving trying to trip up a receiver kind of corner than a corner who can make clean tackles. Conley is a typical, good-to-very-good coverage DB, but he’s not great at getting physical nor does he seem like a fit to move to free safety.

Conley is a very solid player with no red flags for medical or off-field issues. He’s just not a first-round corner in this deep draft. You want him on your NFL team, but he’s not a priority given how many great corner prospects are out there that won’t get ‘reached’ for due to their big-name college push.

Conley made just 26 tackles in 13 games last season, and it wasn’t like he was on an island where he never saw action. He had a dominant corner on the other side of him. Conley had nearly double the tackles back in 2015, but fell off in 2016 – I think Conley believes he’s a touch above tackling/hitting in some senses.

I’m surprised Conley only had 8 PDs in 2016, his career high. He was picked on a decent amount. Conley lost some head-to-head battles and also floated around in a zone-like coverage a lot as well. It doesn’t seem in his purview to be in scrums with receivers or ball-carriers. He likes running with receivers, not so much scrapping with them – my opinion. There’s a value to that with his foot speed. But a #1 corner he is not, at this stage.

The comparison list is mostly made of good-to-very-good NFL corners. The computer sees Conley as useful, not as a likely superstar.

Conley is trying to sneak into the first-round projections in late March. He may just do it on draft day, but I’d bet he’ll be one of the first 10 picks in the second round.
