We've had a flicker trying to dominate the feeder but the resident pair of cardinals aren't having it. Their current brood, actually just becoming juveniles as they begin to molt out of their fledgling feathers, aren't even fazed by the bigger bird. Not even two weeks ago they were just leaving the nest, learning to fly, and having both mom and dad still feed them. And now they are already mastering how to maximize perch time at the feeder themselves. I can already tell one of them will be a male cause the red breast is coming in. It's also cool to see how fast its adult beak is growing outwards.

But I like the visits by the little wren. Clearly it's taking a break from its normal bug diet, like the woodpeckers. But it has perfected how to get in and out without bothering any other bird and somehow effortlessly manages to get the biggest seed only to spend many minutes struggling to eat it piecemeal. Usually it's a peanut or sunflower seed that it can barely keep in its beak.

flickers are typically shy aren't they? cardinals have strong personalities lol, it's too much for some birds. i've seen 'em try to chase chickadees away but those little buggers give no (frank)s

Unfortunately, all the feeder birds have been scarce here the past few days. But I think that's because we've had a red shouldered hawk hanging around in that time. Granted, those hawks are too small to go after other birds (mostly, except for maybe the smallest birds we have besides the hummers—the palm warblers), but it will keep the rest of the feeder birds from coming out.

The hawk instead was going after all the small lizards here. Mostly the anoles. I wish it could catch the big peeping-tom anole that keeps sitting at my kitchen sink window and looks in on me when I'm there. That damn anole doesn't even have the common courtesy to give a dewlap display show.

At least the wren today was brave enough to be out in the open. He was sitting on our patio's decorative fence and singing away. He was loud enough to awaken me from my nap just in time for the Flyers game. I wish he would have let me keep on napping.

I have no problem with this. Especially if you do a different kind (Carolina, St. Louis, Memphis, Texas, etc.) each night, which means you're doing it correctly.
