my kids used to read this one about a cat going to the beach and eating cupcakes and leaving sand all over the place. great stuff. (frank)ing cats always win. A Center Valley man tried to commit suicide in a Lehigh County courtroom Tuesday afternoon after being sentenced to jail for having sex with an underage girl last year in a cemetery.

When Jordan Dean Wenhold starting gobbling prescription pills from a bottle he took out of his pocket, the families on both sides nearly came to blows, causing Wenhold's mother to hyperventilate. Allentown paramedics arrived to help Wenhold and his mother.

The drama started when Judge James T. Anthony sentenced Wenhold, 23, to nine to 24 months minus a day behind bars for having sex with the 14-year-old girl. By shaving one day off the maximum, Anthony kept the sentence a county jail term instead of one in state prison.

"Wait, I'm going to jail?" Wenhold said. "OK."

Wenhold, who had been free on $20,000 unsecured bail, reached into his pocket for the bottle and started chugging. He then tossed the pill bottle behind him.

When his mother, who was seated in the back of the courtroom, started screaming and asking what he was doing, Wenhold replied, "Suicide."

Sheriff's deputies surrounded Wenhold and held him up while he appeared dazed and about to fall. Meanwhile, his mother started yelling at the victim's family.

"I know your daughter sleeps around," she said.

The victim's father strode aggressively toward Wenhold's mother and another man, calling the mother a "b----."

At least one deputy sheriff ran toward them, breaking up the argument, while other deputy sheriffs forced Wenhold to spit out about a dozen orange and yellow pills.

More deputy sheriffs then stormed into the courtroom. One collected the pills Wenhold had spit out. Several controlled Wenhold — a large man — as he began to sing loudly while others attended to his mother, who was slouched on a bench in the back of the courtroom hyperventilating.

Court personnel strapped an oxygen mask to the mother until paramedics arrived to assist her. Wenhold was taken to a courtroom holding cell. On the way, he told a deputy sheriff he swallowed "depression pills."

Anthony said he'll have to re-sentence Wenhold because he was cut off while tacking on five years of probation after the jail term.

Wenhold pleaded guilty in August to statutory sexual assault, a felony.

According to court documents:

On April 16, 2012, Wenhold and the teenage girl went to the Friedensville Cemetery on West Saucon Valley Road in Center Valley where police say the victim "was made to give" Wenhold oral and vaginal sex.

The girl was interviewed by police May 1, 2012. Police took her underwear and sent it to a state police crime lab where it was tested for DNA. Police also took a DNA sample from Wenhold.

They said the sample from the underwear matched Wenhold's DNA.

"This has just shaken the whole foundation of our family," the victim's father said when the hearing was still calm.

Chief Deputy District Attorney Matthew Falk said Wenhold blamed the victim by saying she came on to him and insisted it was consensual. He was 21 at the time.

"I turned 21 and couldn't put the bottle down," Wenhold told the judge. "I developed a drinking problem … Jack Daniels can really mess you up."

Public defender John Baurkot said Wenhold is "low-functioning" and has mental health issues.

"I don't think he'll ever let this happen again," Baurkot said.

"Oh, hell no," Wenhold replied, just minutes before swallowing the pills.
