I watched all his playoff games and some of his regular season games yes. Decent 2nd pairing dman.

$33M for a guy that's only had one season that you could argue was worth $5.5M is risky as hell though. Total Toronto type move. On a 2-3 year deal it'd be nice but 6? Damn.

only way this bites the habs in the ass is if the cap goes down, but even then they haven't had a solid 2nd pairing d-man since Roman Hamrlik left, and he was making 5.5 as a much older guy, when the cap was much lower.

i'd say most big money long term deals end up sucking eventually outside of the superstars

someone else will always be willing to offer term so teams don't really have a choice if they want to keep someone like petry though i guess

someone else will always be willing to offer term so teams don't really have a choice if they want to keep someone like petry though i guess

the habs have almost 0 depth at RD in the system so petry fills a very pressing need. and the majority of those big contracts that do end up sucking are also surprisingly tradeable (clarkson, wizniewski)

if petry signed a 10 year deal and became a cokehead with a bad back, i would be worried, but as far as i know none of that has happened as of yet, so i'm ok.

I am here to give you the COLD HARD FACTS regarding how well Bergevin did with the Petry extension. Here goes :

Petry would have gotten FOR SURE these numbers on the market, therefore the term "overpayment" cannot be applied in any way to this situation.

I'd say they're around par. Petry was as bad as Phaneuf under similar circumstances, ie #1 guy on a terrible defensive team.

Take salary into consideration and yeah, I take Petry too. Phaneuf's not as bad as people say, he's just overpaid and more suited for a #3 or #4 role.
