A Letter To Caniacs

My Fellow Hurricanes Fans,

Our precious hockey team, the one we agonize over, fight over, and commit so much time to defending the attendance figures of, rests on a precipice.

On one side lies the dark, unforgiving pit of watching this hard-working and extremely well-coached team struggle through 2-1 losses to the tune of a bottom 5 finish in the NHL once again. The other, a scoring breakthrough that finally sees the team reach the glories of the postseason for the first time since 2009.

The team has faced many trials so far this year. An injured Jordan Staal, the Annual October Goaltending Catastrophe, whatever the hell it was that Justin Faulk was doing for a while there. But the team has largely persevered and currently sits 5 points ahead of where they were last year through 25 games. A marked improvement, but unless a significant run occurs soon, as it historically has for this team, it won't be enough.

We have seen the scoring woes we were worried about before the season come to pass. A tremendously high volume of shots has, so far, not resulted in a reasonably equivalent number of goals scored. One hopes that the improved offensive talent (and luck) will turn these results around, but nothing is guaranteed.

Have hope, though, my friends, for all is not lost. The team is but a few inches, a few meager bounces from success and a run to the playoffs. It can happen. It has happened. It will happen again! Probably.

And even if it does not, look forward to the future, my friends. The World Junior Championships are coming, and the Hurricanes could have as many as three prospects on Team Canada alone. It's rare enough to have one player on that squad, let alone three. And two of them are even forwards!

The day is coming, my friends. It may be this year, or next year, or in Quebec City, but the day the Hurricanes finally get over that next hump IS coming.

In Ron We Trust.
