So there aren't any moves that can be made between now and then to add to the defense? So I don't see, unless you can look into the future, that the Flyers will be in the same situation. Look at the difference between last year's and this year's team. - MJL
You forgot that after Timonen leaves... there is ZERO shot of us winning a cup. |

I think you're undervaluing Suter. - bradleyc4
I don't think I am. He's a finesse offensive defenseman who is solid in his own end. Very good on the PP. But he is not at Timonen's level defensively. |

I thought Ike Reese did a credible job breaking down the intricacies of the penalty kill.
Listening to WIP for informed hockey talk, is like going to Trenton State Prison for a course on etiquette. - PLindbergh31
Dan Klecko filling in for Glen and talking hockey the other day made me want to punch a wall. I'm came close to calling in. He talked about how much Ottawa stunk and the fact its horrible the Flyers lost to them. |

No.
EDIT:
Prepare the onslaught - jak521
I think the 3 year age difference in the players is what would make me lean towards no. If they were the exact same age, I would have to lean towards doing it. |

There is a large consensus that feels Suter has made Weber look better than he is.
Justsayingisall - jak521
They're just a perfect match. Suter is the puckhandler who can easily bring the puck into the offensive zone and set up a PP. Weber is the big cannon on the other side.
Suter is every bit as good as Kimmo Timonen in every aspect of the game, if not better. |

In trading JvR for a top dman, I am concerned about now AND the future. We have a boatload of young offensive talent in Giroux, Schenn, Couturier, Read, Simmonds, Voracek.
JvR has the kind of value that can bring in a dman of the future for this team and in the current and long term we have the depth offensively to make such a move. |

I think your overrating Suter. Suter would be an upgrade over Carle. He isn't as good defensively as Timonen is. - MJL
i'm with you on not giving up valuable assets for a pending ufa, but i am much higher on suter than you seem to be
i think upgrade on carle is a bit understated. and (as i believe i've made clear here before) i'm a big fan of carle |

I didn't say that, but the state of the Flyers defense is such that if Timonen were to leave when his contract is up, they are in some serious trouble on the back end.
Adding a guy who can pick up that slack when Timonen leaves and adding him to Timonen right now is a win win situation in my book. It is giving you a better shot to win now and ensuring yourself a legitimate top dman presence in the future. |

Keeping JVR and signing Suter in Free Agency is a bigger win win. |

And what we are saying is why Trade JVR? They can get a top dman in free agency.
This is not the year we win the cup. We all knew this heading in to this season and we all knew that Homer is finally doing the right things and developing a long term contender from within. We all decided we were sick of them dealing away good players.
There is no reason in the world they cant keep everyone and go out and get a major d-man in the off season. They don't need to trade anyone...and they shouldn't trade anyone. |

Check out how "good" Shea Weber was when Suter missed those dozen games or so last season. |
