No. But here's my follow up, what move has Shelley's cap hit prevented the team from making?
There's not a single trade or move to improve the team that having Shelley signed for that amount has prevented. When that happens, his cap hit will be a concern to me. - Jsaquella
The Flyers can rid themselves of Shelley's Cap hit off the Flyers Cap at anytime they choose. Why that continues to be an issue, I don't know. |

The Flyers have two and both are signed next season as well.
I only mention this because I'd really appreciate if the Flyers thought long and hard before signing/traded players to 3 year deals who are borderline at best NHL players. - Buts16
The Shelley signing is Homer's most baffling move to me so far. I hope it's his last too. |

kinda like blair betts - mydoglicks
Yea the Flyers put betts on waivers only to have him sent back. I'm sure if betts was healthy the Flyers would have him in the lineup, especially now with all the injuries and having to dress all the rookies. |

If the Flyers feel they need a roster spot or the Cap space to make a move they feel they need to make, they will do what needs to be done. |

I'm sure every team might have a guy or two, as meh as Lolja has been, he has had moments where he has helped the team. I wouldn't have minded signing him, but the second year was what I didn't understand. Sean OD is being scratched on the reg in Chicago, he looks shot. I didn't want him back either.
I'm looking forward to see what Gus brings. |

Take Shelley out of the equation period. Could they have signed an enforcer for cheaper who might actually get on the ice more? The cap space hasnt held them back from doing anything but that doesnt mean you have to spend it to spend it. - stveshdy
Possibly. What enforcers were out there that could play a regular shift-or a more regular shift than Shelley? Not many of them around that summer, IIRC. Maybe Shawn Thornton or Brandon Prust were there, but I don't recall.
I do recall the Rangers paying Boogaard about $500K a year more than Shelley that summer.

Exactly. As soon as they need the space, they can easily send him to the AHL and have him off the cap. |

I agree. It hasnt held them back from making any moves and if they need the space they will move him. My only issue is do they have to spend 3yrs at $1.1M cap hit on an enforcer. Now obviously its not our money but you still have to pay Shelley even if he is sent down. So if you can get a cheaper enforcer who will play it makes more sense to do that. |

There is no need in the NHL for goons anymore, I've been saying it for years.
The Wings have proven over and over. Let's be honest, a goon does not stop a player from taking a run at another player.
I appreciate what these guys have done to make an NHL career but I think it's time for the goons to be gone. I don't consider guys like you mentioned to be strictly goons, they can play a 4th line shift and not hurt you. |

Sestito did play solidly in his brief call up. He looked like a mess in pre-season, lot of running around and poor positional play.
But, if the coach isn't playing the enforcer, is it better that the guy sitting is Jody Shelley or a developing young player? If Lava was using Shelley regularly, then bringing up Sestito would be a better route to take. - Jsaquella
I would take sestito over shelley as it seemed to me when he was up here, especially in that Rangers game good lord that hit where sent the ranger flying through the air without a penalty or mention from shanahan was a beauty, that he can actually keep up with the play. On top of that I remember him having a couple scoring chances, then on top of that he's a pretty good fighter if it has to come to that. I just think the experiment with him is too short lived to make a determination. I'd really like to see him over the course of ten games. |

Can they make his contract go away though? Each team has a limit to the amount of contracts they can carry, no? 50 or something like that? Why even waste a contract on him was my thought. I guess Homer had no clue the young guys would perform they way they have. But still, I'm sure there were at least 50 other guys he could have given a contract to over Shelley. Guys that play with an edge, can drop when required, and can actually skate without looking like their spine is fused together. |

agree 100%, If the Flyers can get Gleason or Beauchemin for a good deal, go for it but if the price is too high let it ride. If they do trade for Gleason so thinking will have the Flyers trying to resign the guy after the season is over but that is just me - bigmookalookie
I'd have to think that a guy like Gleason or Beauchemin, if acquired, would be approached to sign an extension. Both are early 30's fairly young, and could still have several solid years ahead of them. If it was a guy like Hal Gill, they might toss a year at him, but guys at his age would likely be rentals only |

My only point is if your going to carry an enforcer maybe they should try and get one who would cost less and be more productive (like playing). I have nothing against Shelley, I just dont understand the need to spend that kind of money on an enforcer. What other enforcers sign for is another issue, the Flyers dont have to follow suit of what the Rangers did/paid. |

The League is rapidly moving towards that. Someone posted a link to an article that the League is going to look at eliminating staged fights somehow.

That's exactly how I see it. You still need team toughness, but you need guys like Simmonds, or Prust who can handle the skating game, too. |

I know Mr Snider has lots of money but if I was him and if Shelley was demoted to the AHL and the Flyers were paying 4 players NHL money to play in the AHL I wouldn't be please.
that's about $5 million in salary right there, absurd. As it is they are at 3 players and around $4 million.
Again not a big deal just saying I'd be pissed if that was money no matter how much I had.

I don't disagree with that. I'd be happier to have the contract slot. As for the money, I'm not signing that check, so it's immaterial to me. The only thing I care about is how it affects the Flyers cap wise. |
