When you build a team, you have to build it with strength down the middle.
Goal should be ok for this team, but center has been a problem. Without strenth down the middle, you will always have a problem with puck possession. Gaustad is the only good center the sabres have and chances are he might be gone at the trade deadline if the sabres don't get him signed up for a couple of more years.
On the trade front, I think from what I have read and I am hearing that
Buffalo should try to get Selanne to help bring Armia along next year.
The question is whether Selanne would like to come to Buffalo and play at least another year. Armia is the read deal, and there is not a Finn out there that does not have respect for Selanne. Could Nummenen convince Selanne to come to Buffalo?
Roy, Miller, Lepold plus a pick may be a deal that has been proposed to get Getzlaf, Hiller and Selanne. Money wise it feels good and it shakes up both teams! Hiller is two years younger than Miller and getzlaf is younger than Roy...so this helps us from that perspective.
A counter offer that includes Myers, may have come back to Buffalo and that is not likey to happen. Murray is not in a position to fleece teams.
Knowing that Armia is the read deal, would anyone deal him with Miller and Roy to get Getzlaf and Hiller plus a pick so that selanne can bring him along in Anaheim instead?....maybe it just ends up being Roy and Armia for Getzlaf....not sure that I would go in this direction either, but its the cost of getting a shake-up done.
Besides Anaheim,
Columbus is definitely a possible trading partner...they desperately need defensive prospects......Buffalo likes Ryan Johansen a lot and two of Weber, Brennan, Pysyk or Person might get us a nice young center in Johansen who played well with Kassian and Foligno last year at the World juniors; Brassard could be had right now for Weber and a pick, but Buffalo cannot fit him in under their cap right now because it may ties us down too much. Vermette would be nice, but ts too much money aginst the cap over the next few years; Prospal could work, but should not cost more than a 3rd pick.
And for whatever reason, NJ's coach likes Roy (who he coached in Kitchener). And after Parise recently made a few comments about his status, you have to figure that he could be had in the right trade (and probably would have followed Calameri if he was in Montreal). What about Roy and Enroth for Parise?
That does not solve our center problem, but it defintely creates excitement.
In Edmonton, Hemsky does not look like he will sign next year, so a pick is what it is going to cost to get him.....Sam Gagner may be a center we could target out of there also for defensive prospects.
Then there is Detroit....they have the cap room and they always like to add a veteran or two at the deadline...Boyes or Hecht could go there perhaps for Miller's brother or Darren Helm or Abdelkader to help create some cap space here.
Montreal is going to dump off a few more players and I bet they would love to get their hands on Gragnani and Gautier Leduc to help appease the clammer for French players. Do Josh gorges or Hal Gill interest anyone?
At this point, I think that Buffalo should be both sellers and buyers....selling to the highest bidder and buying salary and contract term from teams that need a shake-up.
Anyone else have some constructive ideas to suggest for Reiger?
PS. what is the difference between last year's team and this year's team.......veterans Connolly, Grier, Niedermeyer, Rivet, and Montador....replaced by youngsters Leino, boyes, Gragnani, Ehrhoff, Reiger and adam.....somehow we got younger and slower..NO....its puck possession....center down the middle and goal....hope they get the message. - RicoMartin

Rico Martin: good post, some interesting ideas, and refreshing to read about some trades that haven't already been beaten to death, ie Roy and Stafford for X.
Selanne is NOT leaving Anaheim... for anything. He is living like a rock star there, and from what my source says, you wouldn't leave either. Hitting golf balls into the Pacific Ocean from your backyard and driving one of your Lambos to the rink in the Cali sunshine trumps Buffalo any day. His lifestyle trumps pretty much any other person's that has ever lived.
Other than that, I'm all for any of the trades that you proposed. Sam Gagner would be nice, and who would say no to Stifford's homeboy/Garth's mancrush? The Detroit proposals are nice, and haven't been mentioned on here.
As for sending Grags and that other Frenchie to Montreal, do it now!!! Grags sucks and I'm pretty sure the only reason he is on the team is because of his playoff performance last year. He sucks.
Weber and a pick... do it! Like the guy and he is tough, but give aways? Yikes!
Miller- keep him or trade him, I'm ambivalent. Probably has more to do with the fact that I got my official Miller sweater before the season began... concussion and suckitude. Bought an autographed Teppo photo a few years ago. Then he got diagnosed with the heart condition and was out for the year. Bought a Miller autograph photo of ebay, he had that high-ankle sprain against the Pens and was out for a longtime a few years back. Lol, the curse lives on! |

Sorry but your Anaheim and Columbus trade proposals are, quite frankly, a joke. Hopefully you're really drunk and/or high right now...
You'll be lucky to get rid of Roy - his act is old and his value is minimal right now... |

i'm starting to get fed up with darcy to my breaking point. i know he's not going to tip his hand to the news media but he was being a jerk to mike schopp (i know, people that don't like schopp say the same thing about him, he kind of is but his job is to facilitate) and made it seem like everyone was too stupid for demanding the core be broken apart. personally i would have shed some salary last year at the deadline. my debate last year: keep connolly and trade roy?) i know he was hurt, and that killed the debate, but it still seemed like he might have had some value before and around the draft. now, we're in such state of affairs that i miss the days when we had connolly on our team...
who would you rather be paying right now? roy at 4 million or connolly at 4.5? kind of makes you sick? doesn't it?
i really hope someone is bluffing, either darcy with a big trade, or pegula with his unwaivering trust of darcy, something has to give!
last year at this time i was praying for a lottery pick, and i was wrong to want that because this team was damn fun at the end of the year, but this year i see the sabres and lottery picks sound like a fine prize for what we have to watch lately (and i was at the leafs game last night and it was fun!) |

maybe you should actually read the full article and read what he actually said in full
if you do that you will see that parise still wants to be a devil next year and hasnt wavered on that
just a bunch of articles and people taking parts of the interview and leaving out big pieces of the article because they know it would create more buzz and hits

Jesus Christ I know this team is bad but can we please try and keep our heads skrewed on right.
Stop calling people 28-31 youngsters. Some may have kids that are close to being teenagers. They are adults plain and simple. Stop trying to say this team was better off with Tim "I have a vag instead of balls" Connolly, Craig "I now play in the ECHL" Rivet, Mike "If I only had hands I could finish a break away" Grier, Rob "I have special" Nieds, and Steve fvcking Montador.
Does this team have Issues? Fvckin A they do, but last years team was no prize either. A 1st rd loss in the playoffs is only better than not getting in. AKA our tee time was 10 days later than yours. And don't give me that hey you never know bullsh!t because it's exactly that bullsh!t with Miller back there.

RRRRRIIIIICCCCOOOOO
the sun seems a little brighter today just b/c RicoMartin is back and that means the deadline is approaching, which can only mean that we can all get real excited and then get let down by Darcy
and as far as constructive ideas for Darcy, if Darcy wants to really help this team he would have stepped down by now.

Thruth, last years team sucked for 80% of the season then went on an unbelievable run when Miller went down, and there really wasn't that much improvement made so why we all bought into this being a stanley cup contending team is puzzling.
this team looks slightly better than last years team but the warts are still here
