Do we, or do we not know whether or not Laviolette suggested against this? - Schenn2shine
Your just turning a blind eye to the fact that Shelley gets paid to protect his players/teammates. Whether he goes after Clutterbuck or any other Wild is the issue. You have to stand up for your teammates when thats your role. You dont let opposing players take runs at your teammates. Shelley isnt here to score or assist on goals.

Did Laviolette have to suggest that Giroux and Jagr try to score? That Coburn and Meszaros play defense? Shelley's primary role is to stick up for his teammates and protect them. He's not here to score goals.

Nope, skate up to him, get into his face and goad him into fighting. Deliver a shove, taunt him and tell him if he doesn't fight, then his star player is going to get to meet your shoulder pad, face to face.
He may not be willing to fight-happens a lot nowadays, which is why I think goons will be extinct in another few years or so-but at least make the effort. - Jsaquella

Shelley broke into the league with Columbus.. and was often a healthy scratch during his 7 years there. Playing 80+ games one...
Here's his career... mind you how BAD columbus is.. and he still couldn't stay in the lineup there...
2000-2001 - 1 game
2001-2002 - 52 games 3 goals 3 assists +1 206 PIM
2002-2003 - 68 games 1 goal 4 assists -5 249 PIM
2003-2004 - 76 games 3 goals 3 assists -10 228PIM
2005-2006 - 80 games 3 goals 7 assists -4 163 PIM
2006-2007 - 72 games 1 goal 1 assist -6 125 PIM
2007-2008 - 62 games 1 goal 7 assists -2 135 PIM (Year he went to SJ)
2008-2009 - 70 games 2 goals 2 assists -6 116 PIM
2009-2010 - 57 games 2 goals 7 assists +5 115 PIM
2010-2011 - 58 games 2 goals 2 assists +0 127 PIM
These are not the stats of an NHL player. These are the stats of a guy who only fights. He plays against other teams 4th lines, and plays poorly against them.
He's an enforcer. Nothing more, nothing less. - archion113

The only person making any kind of sense to me right now is Jsaq. I'm not going to fight with everyone because it's not easy but I'll say this.
Anyone could have went after Cutterbuck last night. Anyone. This doesn't fall on to the shoulders of Jody Shelley (Especially when so many recommends team toughness). Jody Shelley is an easy target for criticism because he's the enforcer. The same way Ilya Bryzgalov is an easy target when he doesn't get a win because he's the number one goalie and many on here don't know how team defense works. We don't know if Laviolette recommended that Shelley do not fight Cutterbuck or not. We have no idea. Shelley could have said something during a commercial break or in a scrum. What if Shelley wasn't in the line up and someone still didn't say anything. So where is the team toughness? I'm going to say nonexistent.
If many are offended with me not agreeing with their point of view. By all means, insult me. Get mad. You're doing a great job already. The Fact is, Shelley's on this team and all the whining over it means nothing.
He played a solid game. Got better as it progressed, especially with his rebound control, despite a fairly weak goal. Needs to build on that effort. - Jsaquella
Im expecting big things from the Bryz from here out. Lavy better call on him Thursday night against the NY Islanders. Ride the horse and enjoy.

i highly, highly doubt it, but do you think he's purposefully giving up those big rebounds to test his defense to start the game? they are so bad they almost look intentional to me.

The difference is, Shelley is running the risk of possible suspension. Cutterbuck has to agree to a fight. If he doesn't agree, he can skate off and continue running guys.

Giroux should have went after Clutterbuck.

Is this the first time you've actually echoed? - bodiva88
actually, no. i initially named my first dog Echo, but then after calling him a few times, I realized how absolutely awful that was. "come here echo, echo, echo." so i changed his name to wilson instead.
