Why pose that question? Look no further than our actual #1, Pronger, being out. Though our defense suffers, we are still able to compete and stay in 4th for the conference. I'm not saying Giroux is more valuable than Pronger or vice versa, but JVR+Schenn+draft picks for Weber is an overpayment. Both of those guys are future 1st liners; no reason why you would trade all of that for a Weber, who although is a top defenseman, is showing that he doesn't want to stay in Nashville. - steelydan
You dont know they are furute first lines... They could be busts, injury prone, etc...
You KNOW Weber is a Norris Canidate and not just a top line D-man, but one of the leagues best.
There are 10 forwards of the same calibur for every 1 defenseman like Weber. That is why you trade 2 possible 1st liners for a d-man of his calibur... |

My point is that Pronger is our #1 until he comes off the books. Then the conversation can be played differently. But if you ask me: "Would I rather lose Pronger and Timonen, or Giroux", its a no brainer.
Truth be told, Pronger's future will likely be decided in the off-season. From there, we'll know if he's going to retire (or rather stay on LTIR for the remainder of the contracT), or if he'll be good to play. From there, we can readjust the team and have a new number 1 defenseman, or number 2. - steelydan
Sorry dan I cant agree.
Pronger isnt our #1. Timonen is. Pronger isnt even skating right now.
I believe if you have a chance to get a guy like Weber, who can be here for the rest of his career, and is a Conn Smythe kind of player, you do it right now.
If in the unlikely case Pronger comes back next season then you adjust accordingly. |

I don't think the Flyers make a move for Weber (someone that will cost 6mm +) until they no definitively that Pronger is not coming back. |

I don't want him going anywhere. He looks close to taking it to the next level. - funmaster18
He often looks like the best skater out there for stretches.
He has been a little unlucky in the goal scoring department.
Plus he is a big dude and can protect the puck very well.
I'm thrilled with the return for Carter, and I hated that trade at first. |

This is what I'm telling you.
The season before Pronger was traded here, Lupul was made expendable by Claude Giroux. Giroux wasn't a full time player when Lupul was still playing here, Giroux was being worked into the line up and playing on the 3rd line. By moving Lupul, Giroux was able to move up.
You have to consider what was going on at the time. - Schenn2shine
And with Read and Couturier, JVR and Schenn are becoming expendable... |
|
|
|
Because some people think getting a bonafide perennial Norris candidate in his prime is worth those losses, and sets the team up better over the course of the next 5+ years. Well, I can't speak for them, but that's what I'm assuming they're thinking. - eayost
I'm all for getting Weber if you find another way to do it. JvR and Schenn projected as being front line players. How will you feel once Weber is 37 and in the position Pronger is now and JvR and Schenn are on other teams putting up Giroux points? Mostly against us like Patrick Sharp, all because we dived head first into a Bobby Clarke type of trade. |

And Weber could be injury prone too......
These ifs and buts are always fun to discuss. However, when it comes down to it, those 2 guys are looked at as part of our core future. With Pronger likely playing or going on LTIR at the start of next year, it opens up a good 5M+. Why trade away this young potential when we could always sign a Suter in FA, etc. ??? |

actually I 'd love to see this, Shelley chasing Grabner around.

For what its worth I think if you are leading with a package like JVR and Schenn you will have to include two firsts.
Nashville wont be trading a top 3 dman in the league for a bunch of maybes unless you overpay. Which in reality is what JVR, Schenn and picks really are. |

The difference is Lupul is like 27-28 and just now breaking out. Moving Lupul in favor of Giroux was the right move in terms of skill and talent. If you want to pick up Weber, do it in a smart way. |

It's relative. Pronger is our number one because he is getting paid to be our #1 and his status for next year is undecided. I'm sure it will likely be decided in the off-season. At that point, we can say: "Pronger is coming back and is our #1"; or, "Pronger is LTIR and Timonen is our #1, but we have 5+M to spend on someone like Suter, etc., so we may have a different #1".

There is no way of knowing if we'll win a cup just by trading for Weber. If we trade for Weber and suddenly Weber gets a head like Crosby because of his rough style, then what? We could have handed Nashville a number of Cup because we sent JvR and Schenn the other way. Look no further then the Eric Lindros deal from Quebec. |

You are downplaying JVR's stature. How is the guy a maybe? Because he's struggling with groin issues? He showed us in the playoffs what he can look like at full health and ready for the playoff run... |

I think about it this way. The team who gets the best player usually wins the deal.
When Pronger was traded for people were freaking out because we just lost depth, and quality young players along with solid picks.
Pronger nearly brought this team a cup. If the Flyers dont make that deal they damn well arent making it to the finals. You have to take some risks, and JVR/Schenn, as promising as they might be. Have really proven jack poop when compared to a guy like Weber. |
