i'm beginning to think "goofball" just doesn't work in this town, regardless of sport, for key positional players. fans are way too serious about winning. i can't think of any goofball that's won something though, so it's hard to say if fans would embrace that attitude even with a championship being delivered. my gut tells me no. - hammarby31
I don't agree with that. The fans here loved those goofball 1993 Phillies before and after they failed to win a World Series.
I think the media blows his personality way out of proportion and the sheep that actually listen to them feed in to it like leeches.
I love players like Bryzgalov, I root for him even more BECAUSE he is an interesting fellow who gives better answers then the standard "ya, no question, i mean, we just hafta werk haerd oot there shift to shft."

i'm talking about now. the environment in which athletes have to operate with 24/7 wall to wall coverage of everything they do (including what time they take a poop) has changed substantially. when bernie won those cups, the flyers were still in their infancy. 35 years later with no other hardware has a way of changing the fans' mindset. |

I look at things like this... DEFENSE wins championships. Not offense.
Get Weber. Win championship.

i understand that point of view - and there have been a handful of athletes that were beloved here who were goofy/different etc....i guess i'm thinking more about the recent past and current day. a guy like bryz has little room to be a personality if he's not winning. not in his position. not with the cup drought. not with the stigma of "no goalie since bernie". not with his contract.

Cant argue that. Goaltending and defense is what matters come playoff time. |

This is true. I just find the disliking him b/c he's unique totally frivolous. He doesn't say anything derogatory to anyone he just makes silly jokes that and the guy barely has his bags unpacked. But you have to agree if he had Bob numbers all this stuff would be overlooked even in Philly. |

The problem is, is when idiots blame the guy's on ice/field/court/diamond performance on his personality. Two separate things.
But If they win a Stanley Cup with Bryz, the jokes about "The Universe" will become he's a quirky goofball, but he's OUR quirky goofball. |

Whats the boards consensus regarding which new players are likely to be in a Flyers uniform come trade deadline? (besides Gleason...)
Bryan Allen, Ladislav Smid ?
What will it take to get Ryan Suter deal done ?
any forwards on the radar ? |

if Rinaldo is healthy and Shelley is a scratch, perhaps it could be a concourse entertainment activity? |

i agree that D wins. it's why falling short in 04 still burns me because they were so close, and i firmly believe they would have won the cup had their blueline been able to stay healthy.
get weber, sure, but at what cost? it's a fine line. |

If he were winning people would LOVE him. I still think he will win here, and win a lot. He will be a beloved figure here by the time it is all over.

Roenick was and is still a goofball and fans loved him here. Once Bryz plays up to his capabilities, I'm sure everything will be fine. |

Yea but Weber hasn't won a whole lot of championships either. However You are right about the defense but when we say defense we shouldn't be referring strictly to the defensemen because the forwards play a role too and I see more of the forwards screwing up defensively than the actual Defensemen. |

Does he have to be a Philly goofball? Jim McMahon...though you could argue that that teams D won that Superball for him. Come to think of it he was a Philly goofball for a while ... albeit as a backup.
