Defense, goaltending and depth wins Championships...fact! The 80's have long since past. Look at the standings, Nashville has just as good a shot at the Cup as the Canucks at this point. Weber and Suter aren't going anywhere until the summer, if at all?

1 Detroit 47 31 15 1 63
2 Vancouver 47 28 15 4 60
3 San Jose 44 26 13 5 57
4 St. Louis 46 28 12 6 62
5 Chicago 47 28 13 6 62
6 Nashville 47 27 16 4 58
7 Los Angeles 48 23 15 10 56
8 Colorado 48 25 21 2 52

Centres, too. Ususally the Cup team has 2 star centres. Nashville, not so much. Nashville has no where near the chance that Vancouver has.

Yes and no...sure the great teams had two very good centers, Gretzky/Messier - Sakic/Forsberg - Yzerman/Federov - etc etc.

But 50% of teams do it with just two good centers, last year Boston had Krejci and Bergeron as their top two centers. Krejci had 62 pts in the regular season and Bergeron had 57, not star caliber centers but two good centers.

In 2007 Anaheim had Andy McDonald (78pts) and Ryan Getzlaf (58pts) as their top two centers, DEFENSE - goaltending and depth won for them.

In 2010 Chicago had Toews and Bolland as their top two centers, Toews had 68 pts in the regular season. They just had extreme depth, defense and goaltending going for them.

Anyways it's not a MUST. Don't get me wrong though...I really like our situation with Hank and Kes!!! But we need more depth and better defense.

Morrow can fetch a lot more than Raymond and some plugs.

The deal would need hodgson and tanev involved for sure. Plus Raymond.

For Hodgson and Tanev, you'd be giving up Jamie Benn.

which is laughable I know.

Chicago had Sharp as their 2nd guy and were deep at centre with Madden playing on the 4th line. Toews won the Conn Smythe, so his good but not great regular season wasn't really an issue. Also, their goalie was pretty average. Their D was very strong, though I'd say their forwards were stronger.

Krecji finished tops in scoring in the playoffs. And their depth at centre certainly trumped our when Henrik and Kesler were playing hurt. But yes, their D and goalie were their stronger aspects.

Still, without getting Chara or Weber or someone like that, our forwards and goalie will be the key to winning. Our D is capable but not otherworldly.
