I want them to win as well, but more importantly if they are to lose, they need to stand up and be counted. - Hextall271
Getting into fights is not the only way they can stand up and be counted. Hit everything that moves, score goals, make sure that you make the Bruins work their asses off would also be standing up and going down hard. |

It may not have had a bearing on the game the last time. But having Chara in the box for 5 minutes gives the Flyers an opportunity to try and take advantage of it. - MJL
I understand that aspect of it. However, a fight can give both teams momentum, and Boston seemed to get more out of that fight than the Flyers did, regardless of not having Chara for five minutes.
I mean obviously, trading Shelley for Chara for five minutes helps the Flyers. But don't ignore the impact that the Bruins got, seeing their captain and best defenseman, beating the crap out of the Flyers tough guy. |

Things went from bad to worse in the Bruins 6-0 loss. Giroux wasn't playing and then Giroux's replacement (Couturier) went down. These are key players. Obviously we're even more banged up now but we do have our best player and I think as long as nobody gets hurt at any point in this game, we can stay with them. I felt losing Couturier against Boston was a huge blow. Losing a key PK guy and the guy who was centering the top line wasn't a good thing. Now, because Shelley's and Chara's fight had nothing to do with the outcome of the game, Chara should feel comfortable doing it again. |

Would be a great addition for the Flyers. But he's a real value for his Cap hit, so I don't see why the Jets would deal him. - MJL

Well an article that was written in the NY Times was just about that subject, was talked about today. And it dealt with the statistical evidence that pretty much concluded that winning or losing a fight, has little to do with giving a team momentum. No matter which way you spin it, getting Chara off the ice is a positive. And would be a good move by Shelley if he could get Chara to drop the gloves with him. |

Yeah, I want them to compete in every way. How do you like their chances today with all of the injuries? I'm a little worried they may not have the horses to win it. It'd be an ideal game for our tender to steal. |

I guess my point is, if the Flyers don't play better than they did last time these teams met, it won't matter if Chara fights Shelley anyway |

It's a daunting task. Boston is +70 in terms of goal differential, so they win goalies' duels, shootouts, you name, they have the horses.
I just want a good, honest sixty minute effort from the Flyers. I want them to be physical, and work their asses off. If there's a fight or three, fine. But more importantly I want them to try and win the game. |

Nobody can argue with that. In a 6-0 victory, how much of an effect of Chara beating Shelley in a fight, have on the outcome of a game? Not much. Now if the Flyers could take advantage today, of Chara off the ice for 5 minutes. That could have a big effect on the outcome. It's all in theory. And the Flyers have to play much better then they did the last time. And if they don't, Chara could sit out the entire game and it probably wouldn't matter.

This is bullpoop. Momentum is a unmeasurable thing. Just because you don't score doesn't mean momentum didn't shift during a game. You can't have a stat or stats that show momentum has shifted.
If I'm on the bench and I see say- Briere- drop the gloves, it's gonna pump me up. That's a leader that hardly ever fights and seeing him do so is going to light a fire under my but.
On a similar note- if I see Rinaldo absolutely destroy someone, it's gonna pump me up. The energy level will go up and the team will play with more grit and determination.
That's a momentum shift. Maybe my team won't score- but that doesn't mean that fights don't change the game. No statistical observation can prove or disprove a change in momentum. The only thing that can prove a change in momentum is actually watching the game and "sensing" that momentum swing.

Yep. You know it's going to be a challenge going in. If they put forth the effort the entire game, and play smart, they can come out of it with two points.
I can handle a loss if they give it all they've got. |

The article gives some statistical evidence that's pretty interesting. It also give some evidence that an enforcer is really unneccesary. It's an interesting article.
How do you explain situations like in a Flyers playoff game, where Carcillo won the fight against Talbot, but the play turned better for the Pens? |

Exactly. If they play like crap and fight 6 times and lose 6-2, what good was the fighting? All that says is that when you get frustrated, you are willing to drop the gloves.
Now, if they are out there banging bodies and working their asses off and the fights spring out of the game, that's fine. I just don't want the obligatory, "We're losing 3-0, I have to go fight Thornton" BS |

So do I. I need Schenn to Shine today. Enough of the baby steps, time to step up and be a player today on both ends of the ice. |
