Dozzer I can't believe you are saying that it is ok for Bettman to screw Toronto constantly as well as other |Canadian markets so that they can open the Nashville's of this league..
Sorry but we need a Euro division or Conference and then you would see major US networks fight for a deal.. Moscow vs New York or LA is much more interesting to people from Nashville than Nashville versus the Edmonton Oilers. - DoctorNHL
i didnt say i agreed with his growth plan, just acknowleging that was what he was hired to do.
a euro division is interesting, however travel would be a big problem, to extreme of a time difference.
some markets have done well.. carolina for instance, of course playoff success help pay the dividends there
and toronto isnt hurting for cash at all..not one bit.. whatever they lose to the league they make up in merchandise sales.. the fraction of a percent of their profits that they pay into the league coffers to keep the league afloat while it attemtps to expand is honestly a reasonable price to pay.

Giving the appalling conditions of the KHL with its widespread corruption and disregard for player safety, I'd prefer that the NHL stay as far away from Russia as possible. - Leeman4Gilmour
So Toronto vs Columbus is better than the Leafs vs Stockholm or Leafs vs Berlin.. or Leafs vs Moscow.. the truth is if the NHL went over there it would be under our rules... any sport could be corrupted and a couple of posts ago I stated how Bettman has corrupted the league in hopes of a big US TV deal and that is ok.. but some foreigners that don't twitch do it and you get your panties in a bunch.
I prefer Russians to some twitchy bugger that cheats all Canadian teams.. |

Dozzer has gone to sleep but this is the exact mentality that I talk about since Bettman took over.. Toronto makes huge money and the building is always sold out .. so they don't need any bounces.
The Refs which there are two now on the ice.. have helped many smaller market teams over the years that I have watched.. everyone has half chances but we are not talking about that we are talking about glaring mistakes.. that just so happened to favour certain teams in need of it.
During the lockout Pittsburgh managed to get drafted when they never played.. Crosby as well as a few other years of prime selection that took them from a team that was moving to Hamilton to a team that won a cup... in the mean time they got a new favourable rink deal and a few other perks.
Boston's fans were fed up as were Chicago's after years of being tooled.. attendance dropped in a couple of original six markets.. all of a sudden miraculously some good draft picks.. and some help along the way led to two stanley cups and some good attendance.
We in Toronto are screwed.. because of our loyalty.

Yes, it is. Because you can watch the Leafs play Columbus at the same time in Columbus as you would in Toronto.
You don't have to watch the Leafs and Columbus play at 3 a.m. So much TV revenue would be thrown away it would be incredible. Sure, some Euro networks might gain some viewers, but please explain to me why, oh why, 30 North American markets are going to throw away a pile of cash to support a hypothetical European experiment?
The league had enough trouble just aligning the 30 teams into 4 new divisions (and it didn't even pass the NHLPA's vote) over concerns about travel, and there are only 4 time zones between the extreme East and West franchises. Try adding another 8 hours difference! |

Well if there was a whole division.. or conference which would be better.. it would just mean a longer road trip and one or two ten hour flights.
Maybe you are missing the fact that lots of people in europe actually stay up to catch games or wake up early when it is on the west coast. That is passion.. the sing at their games.. where you can barely even hear a pin drop in the south NHL.
You should re-evaluate .. I have lived in Europe and have traveled scheduled properly it is no worse than the trips out west.
You definitely wouldn't be having a back to back in New York and Prague...
Think... outside the box.. Gary hates it. |

I have Football/Soccer for years.. I know the time changes.. clearly you don't know GMT time.. the games would be at 4PM.. so you would get off work with all you buddies early and hit a bar.. you are sounding lie those Americans that think Toronto is inundated with Polar Bears... and igloos.. a Moscow game would be a couple hours earlier.. so we are talking mid-afternoon games...
As for TV deals which ones would we be losing out on..? We would lose would CBC? TSN? Sportsnet? those are the majors.. the US markets bring very little to the kitty if they are no big locally.. there is NO MAJOR US DEAL..
Yet we could gain huge deals all over Europe.. that pay huge money.. and as the first professional league to go international.. we could actually call our trophy the World Series and not by short-sighted tools...
Now I will write in caps so you can understand... WHAT USA NETWORK WOULD NOT CHOKE ON THEIR OWN TOOLS TO SEE THOSE HUGE WORLD BATTLES LIKE MOSCOW VS NEW YORK... the reason the NHL is failing under Bettman and is not growing is because of their lack of MARKETING KNOWLEDGE.

This is too hard of a concept for people to understand that can't see out of the box... if you are a rule follower, if you like things in neat piles.. if you scrub your hands for 5 to 10 mins to get the dirt off.. you will not get it.

Stockholm is 6 hours ahead of all the big-market Eastern teams. Moscow is 8.
A game played at 8 o'clock in Stockholm (the latest practical time to begin a game) would begin at 2 in Toronto. For Moscow games, noon.
You're losing that revenue, no doubt about it. People don't watch afternoon games during week-days.
As for the other way around, people in Moscow will be watching their team play the Rangers or Toronto at 3 in the morning. This arrangement works for nobody.
I'm sorry, but all the "marketing knowledge" and creativity and vision in the world can't change the impracticality of trying to create a league that extends across the entire Western hemisphere. |

Mr. L4G you make some fine points.. but the difference is some fans already stay up in Europe till the wee hours to catch their favourite players play.. or DVR it.. being a euro football fan.. I watch lots of games during the afternoon.. sneaking a stream in with some headphones when it is tight.. real fans do that...
and that is what we are talking about here REAL fans.. the difference is in the south the weather is too good to waste indoors watching a hockey game.
You will never score a huge US TV the way the NHL is going about it.. there is no demand for it nationally.. regionally there definitely is.
why should all the Canadian teams be supporting teams in the south through the profit sharing plan.
If you want to add some excitement and meaning to the game.. take it to Europe.. because they actually love the product in northern Europe.
As for travel it is 5 hrs 37 mins to go from Miami to Vancouver 4 hrs and 11 minutes from Toronto and it is only 6 hrs 30 mins from Montreal or new York to London once inside Europe it is short trips.. so road trips would be a little longer to economize but Berlin to Moscow is only a 2 hr flight.
I think in the long run true fans support their teams and will still watch games.. no matter which times they are on. Maybe we can get a siesta type deal where during game times we can all coral in the workplace around a tv on break and résumé work after the game is over.
Anyways I am tired of Bettman's league..
