The team is not nearly as far away as some of you are making it out to be...but we're also not as close as I'd like us to be, either.

I think the mis-conception comes from this...the two pieces we are REALLY missing are almost impossible to find.

That being a 1C and 1G.

We have the tools to trade for one...but not to attain both...unless one hit's FA that is and we all know how likely that is to happen.

It's the biggest flaw Burke has in his plan...we saw it in Vancouver with his reliance on Danny Cloutier...even though he had Naz, Burt and Morrison (before his knee injury).

Burkie got lucky in Anaheim and this enabled him to do what he does best...insulate talent with talent. His problem was when he came here we literally had nothing to work with.

So instead of getting his core pieces (G and 1C) he took what he could in order to facilitate the build.

Now we're kinda stuck...we aren't going to finish low enough to get an impact player and we aren't going to have the prospects/players to trade for both.

So here we sit...

Luckily for him there's a possibility we have one of the goalies in the system.

you know me too well it seems ....but I hope you get my reason for not wanting to include Kulemin in trade proposals; unless the other GM sees it the way I do...Kulemin is a hardworking, top 6 guys who can play the body effectively and be responsible defensively. He can chip away and get goals, also create scoring chances.

He may have had a career year last year, but hes also having a very poor year this year and it would be foolish to trade him while his value is so low...because quite frankly I think hell be a gem for years to come and we will be kicking ourselves for YEARS if he gets moved and turns things around again...

Getzlaf is not being moved... If he was available, there are other teams who can outbid the leafs i am sure... but come on, can we get over the getz-wet dream
- senstroll

that offer i sugested was pretty fair i think.. i dont think you can get a much better offer then that.. from other teams!

finger isnt a burke signing however

and that doesnt circumvent the cap at all. he got demoted because he is 8th or 9th on the d depth in toronto

- Dozzer

I have been to a few Marlies games at Ricoh and the most recent one at the ACC - Finger is not 8th or 9th on the depth chart - he is clearly better than Komisarek

It may not be a Burke signing but it is a TML contract

Why doesn't Burke just put Komisarek in the minors to go after a big ticket player?
Would that be a good move on their part?

Burke also has circumvented the cap in the trade that brought Kolzig to Toronto from the Lightning

That is such a good point, bang on man... which is precisely why he needs to give up the farm for a Getzlaf or Staal....

1st, 2nd, Schenn, Mac, Kulemin

2nd comes from trading Grabovski

Oh absolutely... He's the guy I target if I'm BB and give up a poop load of assets to get him. If he's not available (which I don't think he is) Then fine go for Carter but he's not the 1st line Center to play with Kess and Lup.
- Mr_Smokey

Id rather just not at all....why?....Id rather keep our assets and wait for something better...why bother unload on assets on the next best choice, which isnt the best choice for us?

Komisarek can't be sent to the minors without him agreeing to it. He has a NMC

Komisarek has been one of the better Dmen in Toronto defensively this year. Not to mention Komisarek has a NMC and can't be sent down.

AND no way has Finger been good-- I see a lot of Marlies hockey. He's one of the worst Marlies as is. Holzer is 1000x better.

Is it just me or are there Leafs fans out there that laugh out loud when Burke says he does not like like to circumvent the cap by signing players to long term contracts with minimal cash paid in the last few years when he has Jeff Finger buried in the minors collecting $3.75M?

Burke is circumventing the cap with Finger's contract

- MTL1

Noe, (See what I did there?) I see your point. Yes his value is low, I just believe that he would be a requested piece in a Getzlaf proposition...

My sentiment is I'd hate to see him go as well, I couldn't guarantee he'd be part of a deal to win us a cup. But depending on the piece coming back our way, I'd do it.

That being said, Burke's lucked out cuz Grabo and Kuli aren't exactly raising their contract value...

I'd rather have Carter for 9 years than Grabo for 5 (assuming that's what he will want)
