when i saw him smiling in the dad/team photo the next day i thought there was a good chance he's not going to be out long. good sign anyway, although concussions often like to take left turns at albuquerque. - hammarby31
Yup, that was a good sign, as well as him traveling to Florida for the Dad's trip. If he was in bad shape no way he would been allowed to, or would want to be on a 3 hour flight.
Briere did take a beating in that Devils game though, he got crushed like 3 different times, as well as taking an Elias punch to the grill while likely already concussed.
The only guy I would consider buying out is Pronger. If he's going to be a 5 year deadweight on off season spending, plus a LTIR carry all, I'd lean towards buying him out. - Jsaquella
My biggest worry with Pronger is that he won't stick around and pretend to be making a comeback, a la Lappy. I think he would just retire, in which case we'd be screwed. So I also agree that he's the best guy to buy out.
But here's another (crazy probably) thought. Assuming he waived the no trade, could the flyers trade him to a team that needs help getting to the cap floor, along with enough cash to pay his salary next year. He can then retire and the team gets a 4+ mil cap benefit.
Assuming that would fly with the league, the Flyers might actually be able to get a pick or something, since it would be highly valuable to some franchises.

The NHL allowed the Devils to trade Vlad Malakhov in a similar deal, so it's not unheard of, but Malakhov had only 2 or 3 years on his deal.
Who ever negotiates the Canes contracts or what a guy like Gleason is worth in a trade, they should fire that guy. - Schenn2shine
Dont get me wrong.. Gleason is a heck of defensive d-man. He has pretty good wheels, can chip in offensively a bit (not much but hes about a 20 point a season guy), and hits and blocks shots very well. But those guys dont make $4 mil a year
I understand that things can be missed. When you have a world class athlete involved you would hope the team treating him wouldn't miss things such as fractured vertebrae. Sounds like he may not even have had the tests that would be required to identify such an injury. - PLindbergh31
The information I've seen said abnormalities in the Vertebrae, not fractures. These could be, to speculate, something that only a top specialist in the area would be able to identify on tests.
I'd guess. JvR was the first guy that was reportedly back on the ice, among the inured. - Jsaquella
Well, I hope he doesn't return sooner then he has to but if we could have a full line up tomorrow night, that would be truly amazing.
As for standing pat. I want an upgrade on defense. I don't want anything crazy but something. Bryan Allen is still out there, Sheldon Souray. I just don't want anything drastic. If Shea Weber or Luke Schenn are really in the cards, I'm sure that can wait until the summer.

May not be applicable in Carter's situation, but what is winning? Making 50K a year, living in smaller house, and sending your kid to public school while being at a job that makes you happy; or making twice that, living in a larger house, and giving your kids the best opportunities to succeed at a job where you aren't as happy?
That's a no-brainer, if you ask me..... - steelydan
I hope you mean it is better to be happy and comfortable, and modeling for your kids that you can accomplish much without being spoiled. Because being miserable is no legacy to leave your children.

I just don't want to overpay for a guy who isn't and likely never will be a difference maker. Tim Gleason's not going to be a guy that I'd want to trade a 1st rounder & roster player for.

Sure they do. The Flyers have a similar player in Coburn who is going to make 4.5M next year.

If Gleason were a Flyer today and we had to re-sign him, I could live with signing him to the money Matt Carle already makes right now or the money Beauchemin just signed. Four million is over doing it. Gleason isn't a young player with a high upside, he is what he is. In my opinion the Canes were asking for too much for him and signed him to too much.

Yeah, see I don't get this. The object of playing a sport is to win, at least in my life. All things being equal, I would rather win.
Now I wont defend the way Carter acted after he got there, but saying you cant understand why he was pissed, that after signing a cap friendly deal to play in hockey heaven, he was sent to hockey hell, makes no sense to me.
Millions of people also take less money, to work at a place they love. It goes both ways. This was Carter....
I guess I just don't understand the Jason Werth mentality, or the mentality that seems to pervade this place, that you would rather take more money and lose, or that you cant feel bad about making lots of money, playing a game where the object is to win, going to place where you know you will lose constantly.
I would rather win. I would rather enjoy my job. I would rather like where I work. Money is secondary.
I guess Ill never get the other side of this. Hey I have all this money, but I hate what I do, hate where I do it....believe me, it wears you down. - MBFlyerfan
hard to compare us regular folks to athletes. 5 million a year and playing on a losing team is drasticaly different than our lives. I think if someone paid you 5 million, you should be able to find some way to be happy about playing in columbus. there's being happy and then there's being spoiled.

agreed because the only appropriate text for animated sunglasses slowly descending from the top of the gif to cover the subject's eyes is "deal with it".

I don't see how sending your kids to a school that gives them a better chance is considered spoiling them. And work is a part of your life; not your whole life. Many parents take sacrifices and work at a less-than-desirable place if it means giving their kids an advantage in life. If the parents can separate it from home life, and still manage to be happy in life; i see nothing wrong with opting for the more well-paying job. It may be a concept that is lost on the younger generation, but making sacrifices for your kids is not brave or even commendable; it's expected.

Pronger would not have to try and make a comeback to stay on LTIR. Also, why would he retire and give up the moeny owed to him?
