I just noticed that he has a full NTC (2012-13 through 2014-15); modified NTC (2015-16 through 2021-22). Wonder why it didn't start when the contract started. - rockychocbill
You have to be 27 years old or have 7 years in the NHL to qualify for a NTC, I believe. |

You may be simplifying the situation. Sure it was a risk. But when you sign a long-term extension and when management has told you that you and Richie would be the future, a trade is the *last* thing you would expect. It is what it is, but anyone that doesn't feel bad for him is simply jealous of his success and is not looking at the situation with any human element. You can feel bad for the guy and still be envious of him..... - steelydan
Yup. But I don't feel bad or envious. |

You're right, he expected to stay, but it wasn't guaranteed. So, he knew the risk.
And of course I am jealous. Aren't you? He gets paid millions to play hockey and nothing else. |

I'm not jealous, the amount of money he makes or what he does has no bearing on my life whatsoever.

It has no bearing on my life either, but I would like to be a professional athlete and get paid what they do. It wouldn't eliminate all of my problems, but it sure would take care of a few. |

I dont think there is anything wrong with openly stating that you would love to have their job and pay. If someone approached me today and offered me Carters pay and job, but I would have to move to Columbus.. I would do it in a heartbeat. Why? Because my dream would be to play in the NHL. Hell, Id do it for less than I make now. |

I don't think anyone here would say no, including me. But that is so not the point. This is like comparing apples to watermelons.
Would you take a $5 a hour raise to move to Columbus doing the same job you are doing now?
Or more accurately, would you take a $5 an hour raise at your current job with the understanding you were going to move up, but then be told the only way you are getting that raise is to move to Columbus, would you be happy about it?

Braydon Coburn has shown that he can be a much better offensive player than Gleason. Coburn is also a much better passer, a much better skater, is 5 inches and 10 lbs heavier than Gleason. Also 2 years younger. - jak521
Braydon Coburn fits perfectly to the description you gave for the type of player Gleason is. There are many defenseman in the NHL similar to both players making in the 4M range. Coburn and Gleason are similar players in terms of ability. |

It was perfectly reasonable to be pithed in JC's case getting traded to Columbus but in the end it's also expected that he remains professional and reports to the team and gives it his all.
He still doesn't have to like it but like someone said earlier play the best hockey you ever had and quietly behind the scenes ask to be moved.
Sure everyone here would love to be in the NHL making 6 figures but it doesn't work that way with a lot of athletes.
Some people would kill to have my job. If I got transferred to a poophole city in regards to my job I wouldn't be happy either.
I would do my job the best I could and try and find another job elsewhere.
I liked JC here but I like JV and Couturier more. |

JvR and Briere both left the ice before practice ended, prior to the "battle" drills. Guess they're not fully cleared. |

I would make that move getting a $5 hour raise then after a year or two look to move elsewhere for more money.
If you want to relate it to JC's situation and I couldn't move again for ten years then I kill myself to be the ultimate worker than say to mgmnt that would like to be relocated here here or here or be released.
It's hard to compare hourly waged workers to salaried. |

Good points made on both sides of the Carter issue. Can't blame a kid for wanting to have fun even if it means being an a-hole occassionally. But I think mgt. had the expectation that there would be personal growth eventually. Perhaps they felt that Carts was too comfortable. But then if they were worried about comfort they never should have given him a long contract. Me, I always thought that Carts had a 5th gear that he'd show glimpses of then it would disappear. The one thing that struck me about him was his lack of personality during interviews. After the trade I could see that he was crushed because he loved it here and felt blindsided to boot. Never got the sense that he loved it here before that though. He's a very good player that could be great someday. Fred Shero once said that "success is not the result of spontaneous combustion; you must first set yourself on fire." If Cater ever sets himself on fire, the sky's the limt for him. |
