I think the Sabres were seeing Leino as the missing piece of their cup winning team.

This deal is great IMO. We get a play making center and his CAP hit is not all that bad. Yes it is high but it is only for 5 years at 7.3m, slightly less than all the pundits that wanted Lecavalier plus 6 years less.

It sets up tomorrow signing a UFA winger to play with him. I can see Gaborik, Havlat or Hossa on his left with Kovalev on the right. To me that would a very legit number 1 line in the NHL. Supporting cast with 1 or 2 bigger buddies and we are good to go.

Losing Komisarek and Higgins is not that big of an issue. McKee is out there now who can easily replace Komisarek for what he does on the ice and for much less. It is unfortunate to lose Komisarek though and most will criticize Gainey for not negotiating with him earlier but when Komisarek signs with a team for 5 plus million over 5 or more years you will be thanking Gainey for not caving.

This is a great deal.

The barbs by hab fans at the penguins doctors have been ridiculous.
- habby

As long as they are not saying how good the habs doctors have been i don't see why not.

It's not like they are leaf fans bragging about how close they are to being a contender with their wonderous 500 record since the end of October.

Bottom line is our team is better with Gomez than Higgins. Will it cripple us later??..only time will tell, but as of today it's good.

Ryan was developing slower than normal, could potentially still never make the jump. The only way this makes any sense to me is if T. Timmons has eleveated another prospect above him on the depth chart.

We'll have Scot for 5 years now, can we sign two more reasonable forwards to play with him right now?

I really wanted the twins, and I feel this will have nixed that idea, unless we can package Hammer off someplace and sign some cheaper D.

Although his cap hit is what concerns most of us here, I do agree with Gomez being a very effective player for the Habs. Can't deny that the kid's got talent.

stop for a minute and evaluate this. this is not the worst trade ever. you give up higgins...a player whose confidence is broken, who hasn't scored as many goals as his potential makes us believe. losing McDonagh isn't a huge deal. gainey was critized for giving away a young prospect (balej) for kovalev....where is that prospect? you gain a better player in gomez, just at a highly inflated market value. the vinny deal is a dream, just like the lotto, which many players hit having just one great year.
