He defended by coming up with a bunch of dumb, obscure stats that wouldn't matter one iota if a bunch of people were sitting around BSing about this sport.
If it's not clear that he makes his linemates better and that he doesn't get muscled off the puck anymore and that he's just a remarkable talent, I don't know what to say. And, like you said, for him to write another blog defending his reasoning was just about as bad a job at grasping for straws I've ever seen. Espn sucks for hockey, but this guy is going to lose his job over this. It's clear the guy has never held a hockey stick in his life. - potvin05

November 30, 2005: Traded to San Jose by Boston for Brad Stuart, Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau
ya think? LOL - BringBackBalky
Maybe....but lets look a little closer.
Sturm played 4 seasons for the Bruins scoring 23, 27, 27 and 22 goals before he was salary dumped to the Kings for future consderations that amounted to zero.
Brad Stuart and Wayne Primeau played parts of two seasons for Boston before they were traded to the Calgary Flames for Andrew Ference and Chuck Kobasew.
Ference has been a mainstay on the Boston defence for 6 years now and was a rock in the playoffs during Boston's run to the Cup last season.
Kobasew played 2 full seasons with the Bruins scoring 22 and 21 goals and 2 partial seasons in which he was acquired and traded that only amounted to 17 games. He was traded to the Minnesota Wild for Craig Weller, a 2011 2nd round draft pick and the rights to Harvard (now a junior) forward Alexander Fallstrom, who was Minnesota's 4th round pick and #116 overall in 2009.
Weller was a career minor leaguer.
That second rounder turned out to be #40 overall and Boston used it to pick Alexander Khokhlachev, a highly regarded prospect who scored 32 goals and 44 assists in 67 games for the Windsor Spitfires last season and has 20 goals and 34 assists in 43 games for the Spitfires this season.
In essence, Sturm and Kobasew scored more than 20 goals every year they played in Boston.
The Bruins still have Andrew Ference as a mainstay on their defensive corps and have won a Cup with him.
They still have a blue chip forward prospect in Khokhlachev and another prospect in Fallstrom. We do not yet know how these two guys will pan out.
Joe Thornton has not won a thing in San Jose. Thornton has scored a total of 147 goals since he has been in San Jose. Sturm and Kobasew scored 142 goals their combined 6 seasons in Boston. Yeah, Thornton is known as a set up guy and has a ton of assists but the Bruins got Sturm and Kobasew to be goalscorers and Thornton had basically worn out his welcome in Boston.
Not so one sided as it seemed originally......is it? |

I agree, I never called it a great trade, but let's face it, we didn't lose anything by trading roloson. He got hot for them last year but look at him this year. We didn't trade anything that would have warranted a better return - Isles_since_6
exactly!!!
jethro, dont confuse what im saying, im not saying wishart is great, im saying the trade (IE the fact we have something that came of the 41 year old goalie that was leaving after a last place finish year, wisharts potential, his size, hes a dman, he has a few years of development) is why its a great trade.
islanders got POTENTIAL value for basically nothing.
islanders were gonna finish in last with or without roloson in net. |

Good writeup of the assets coming back.
There was a well written hockey news article on this as well and basically said that by elminating Thornton's contract, it allowed the Bruins to makeover their team the way they felt they had to in order to be successful. Ultimately, losing Thornton's deal allowed them to sign Marc Savard as the forward to build around and Zdeno Chara as the D to build around. In the end, they have a cup to show for it so I guess it all worked out int he end?
Sometimes it isn't all about what you get, I guess. |

I will say this I have respect for Roloson for the comments he made about the team last year that being said the Islanders did not need him anymore and got the best offer they could get and at least they got a player. If I remember correctly alot of Lightning fans thought we got that best out of the trade |

A) Your a stats geek
B) You really are THAT guy who lives in his mothers basement and tries to pick up girls at Star Trek conventions.
C) I'm afraid of acknowledging that what you said was very well put together so instead i'll make fun of you. - BringBackBalky

You do know you are siding with a Ranger fan right? He usually knocks the Isles. I mean he dont bother me but I think that is where Balky is coming from |

Look at the history of 9th overall picks. You'll be surprised at the lack of stars. If you get an NHL regular, you have done well.
http://www.mynhldraft.com...-picks/9th-overall/90509/ - isles10289
Maybe you are young and just don't know.
If you start with Cowens....who has played every game for the Senators in this his rookie year and maybe not yet a fair assessment, an go down to the bottom of the list there are 29 players. I left the top two guys off as they are still in junior hockey and Europe.
Of those 29 players only 8 were not "regulars" although some of them were for brief stretches of time. Lee (160 games), Tatichek (3 games), Krahn (0 games), Lundmark (295 games), Petrov (208 games), Slaney (268 games), Fogarty (156 games) and Duncanson (38 games) were not "regulars" in the truest sense of the word although some of them spent some good time in the NHL.
Stars? Quite a few and a couple of hall-of-famers.
Maybe you don't remember a guy like Mike Bullard who had seasons of 51, 48 and 41 goals or Cam Neely who scored over 50 goals three times.
That was not a bad draft spot at all.

Untrue. Show me where I knocked the Isles.
I only knock things I believe are not true or far fetched.
Show me where I called someone a name.
I make my argument and support it with facts...and maybe some opinion.
If I said John Tavares was a superstar in the making would you not side with that because I am a Ranger fan?

I just find it odd that someone who is not a fan of this team would come into this board and do that much research on a post. |

Of all the places Bryan Fogerty had to get drafted... Quebec City. Never had a chance. Honestly though, he was probably one of the best players I ever saw play in junior. Unbelievable game changing defenseman.
...oddly enough, John Slaney is also there... who'd be another incredibly talented junior D. Never tranlsated well to the pros though. |

him being a ranger fan has ZERO impact on whether his argument is legit....should i call him an illogical poop head just because he roots for the rangers? his facts are facts. cant deny that.....i never had a run-in with him either but if we did disagree on something and then he came back railed me the way he just did to whoever said that trade was one sided, quite frankly, id feel stupid and cut my losses.

No, I actually have been going to hockey games for a long time...probably longer than your parents are old!
I have owned my own home for 35 years and a summer home for 25 years so I certainly do not now, or never have, lived in my parent's basement.
I am not a stats geek.
I usually know whats up when I read it based on my familiarity with the game of hockey, but I do a little research at times to support my argument. There are too many people on Hockey Buzz willing say your full of crap if you don't post the facts. Better to post them and not have to take garbage and then repost a supporting argument.
I play nice here!

ill agree with that.....never did i say he is always right, in fact this is the first time ive publicly been in his corner, however in this instance i totally agree with him.
btw, being the "CBA king" isnt cool if thats what he calls himself....if its a name he was given, i cant get on the guy for knowing information |
