It wasn't a poke check attempt. Bryzgalov was guarding against a cross crease pass. The shot hit his paddle and rode up and over it, under his arm.

Given the number of times that a cross crease pass has hit a Flyer skate and gone in, I can understand what his rationale was. But he's got to worry about the puck and let the defense take care of the rest.
