I've heard that LA is trying to dump cap space and the return on Johnson would be a First rounder and a Prospect. It thats true and the Prospect is like Gus or MAB, then its a steal. I have also heard Voracek, but Read would make more sense because of the cap hit. If its Read and a First for JJ, I do it. - RooNosHockey
I'm really against trading Read. If that is true, the issue is that I'm sure LA can get a better prospect then MAB or Gustafsson along with a 1st round pick for Johnson.

am still hearing noise about a Flyers/Leafs deal centered around Luke Schenn and James Van Riemsdyk. Brian Burke also wants Matt Read in return but it does not look like Paul Holmgren is going to go for that.
Burke is drinking the juice - Scottie Upshall
So the names so far is JVR and Read (both Flyers) and Luke Schenn (Leaf). Either Toronto is severely lacking on their end, or it's ridiculous..... |

I dont move JVR straight up for L.Schenn, yet throw in Read too. JJ is better and would be cheaper if the price is Read and a First... |

Possibly it was Chess or Checkers. Not sure what game Holmgren prefers.

He's 25. It's not uncommon for a player to have those question marks. As an example, Voracek had that same reputation in Columbus. Is it proven to be true? Don't by into the hype. 98% of it is BS. - MJL
My fear is they are bringing in a guy who will be as inconsistent as Carle, Mez and Coburn are.
I cant bring him in with the money he makes.
Maybe in FA but to also give up something to get his ass in Philly? I couldnt do it.
Only way Id be willing to do it is if they go out and sign a Boychuk for example.
Either way, bringing in JJ basically means Carle is out the door. Is he really that much better? |

It pains me to say this, but JJ makes Carle look like Kimmo defensively

No Johnson isn't better then Carle but he could be in the future. Carle is extremly consistent as a defenseman. And I have no issue with Coburn or Meszaros really. I think this defense core is underappreciated.

Carle is a strong defender, so it's not an accurate comparison. |

My reasoning as well. That's why I believe it may be Read or Voracek. They are trying to make room to bring in Carter... Bernier, Stoll, and a First to Columbus for Carter, but they would still have to drop cap space... LA has prospect defense they can also call up better then MAB or GUS so they dont need them to replace JJ.
My theory is this. Is Read a nice player with a great contract? Yes. When JVR comes back will he be playing on the 4th line? Most likely. Is our defense hurting for some youth and Depth... Yes. If Read and a 1st is what it takes... I do it... Then I try as hard as I can to get Gill from Montreal... |

If it's true that LA is looking to clear Cap space and wants a prospect and a 1st round pick for Johnson. They won't take Voracek.
Can't have tunnel vision and just look at this year. Read is going to be a 30 goal 2 way forward who can play in a lot of roles and lot of situations. I don't trade Read unless it's for a return that I just can't pass up.

To be honest I think the opposite.
Just for curiosity, I have to step out right away anyway, would you say the defensive game of the forwards is the biggest issue on the team? If not what is?
Personally I think they need one more big horse to be a solid D core, and an actually physical 6th d-man. I think the biggest thing this team needs is a guy who brings a great defensive game on the back end. A d-man that can play DEFENSE first and foremost. I dont think JJ is that guy, and he is more of a puck mover. Not what this team needs to be spending its money on imo. |

So if in the new CBA there is a clause that lets a team get out of one contract. Who will the flyers pick? At this very moment I would say its a clear cut 3 candidates. Pronger, Briere, or Bryz. Not sure if the Flyers organization can stomach paying out Pronger's contract for no production whatsoever. However Briere's is really cap binding, and the Flyers are deep at center. Bryz I would think gets a pass this year from the organization. - Just5
If Pronger is injured, they don't need to get out of it, he's on LTIR.
I guess the answer was yes. |
