So us fans who watch and see just how useless Raymond is are just "average". While you say Raymond is playing well just because he throws pucks at the net from the side boards. Interesting. - hertzman
Didnt you know...KB is the most elite Canuck fan....
I doubt Gillis disregards everything else that happens in a game like KB does simply because the Corsi stats say otherwise.

Corsi is a touchy subject around here. It's an advance stat that most hockey managers, including Mike Gillis, primarily now use to evaluate players and teams. Advanced stats began to be compiled publicly over the last 4 years. The teams that led the league in corsi percentages the last 4 years all went to the cup finals.
It's a touchy subject around here because advanced stats expose the average fan for what he really is when he attempts to evaluate a player. An average fan.
That's hard to for average fan to take, so advanced stats are made fun of so as to save face and convince yourself you know more about hockey than you actually do. - K-Bomb
I don't mind Corsi stats and see it as a more accurate reading of +/-. That said, I would never say that you could build a winning team solely with a more accurate reading of +/- as your only guide. It's a stat and one of many. It has a place in the discussion but I think it's foolish to think it's the only stat that matters.
Corsi leaders for the 2010-11 regular season (who played a minimum of 50 games), in five-on-five situations.
1. Mikhail Grabovski (TOR): 21.3
2. Dustin Byfuglien (WIN): 20.7
3. Clarke MacArthur (TOR): 19.3
4. Ryan Kesler (VAN): 18.2
5. Mason Raymond (VAN): 17.5
Just as a comparison, Steven Stamkos had a 0.8 Corsi Number and Martin St. Louis had a -2.2. |

I'm a huge baseball fan. Most of my friends don't watch until the playoffs. I can watch every Jays game... we understand the game, most people have no clue what's going on. - Scooby_Doo

Actually I love playing ball, did so competatively all my life. However many sports are Awsome to play but horrid to watch, such as golf, curling, badminton and billiards.
- Whiskey-Tango
My favourite sports to watch are hockey, golf, baseball, NFL and tennis.
Golf is a great spectator sport. Might be the only sport I could watch continously from 7am to 3pm.
Baseball is like a game of chess, if you don't know what moves are being made, you'll have no clue what's going on.
Heck, most of my friends don't even know what they are watching when they watch a Canucks game... they see puck go in net and they cheer. |

I don't think people on here have an issue with corsi stats alone.
I think more people have a problem when someone claims a player like Raymond is playing well, simply because of his corsi stats. Raymond may be playing well enough defensively, as well as throwing a few useless pucks towards the net, to have decent corsi, as you say, but that doesn't mean he's playing effectively. |

I'm a huge Jays fan too. They were a Prince Feilder away from being a scary team this year. Now teams will just keep pitching around Bautista. - hertzman
Would have been nice, but not with that contract.
Their bullpen is stronger than ever, but a big bat would be nice. |

Scooby I tend to agree with you more and more with each comment you make. I'm a Braves fan myself and pay for MLB Extra Innings every year to watch the games. Most fans who call baseball boring have never played or couldn't play. Look at soccer and how popular it is everywhere besides the US and Canada...now that is a boring sport. Hardly any scoring, games could end in a tie at 0-0, guys get kicked by a 120 lb. guy soaking wet and they act like their leg was ripped off, talk about diving. - CanUSA17
Wow...slow down there Delgado...as you said earlier people don't nessacarily understand the game of baseball. Which obviously you don't understand the game of soccer. The game of soccer in this country has more people playing it than any other sport. And in the US it is massive, I'm not sure of the numbers but I'm sure it would rival most of the top sports (membership wise).
Soccer is a game of strategy, skill and athleticism. Both my kids played provincially until they were 18 and my wife played on a premier womens team until she was 45, and I coached for over 20 years at the premier level on the island here.
The only reason it isn't bigger here is because it is relatively new on this continent, as the US gets better on the world stage, the level of play will increase down to the clubs level, and soon more world class players will emerge. |

I was gonna say the same thing but couldn't be bothered until you stuck up for the beautiful game there are so many nuances of the game that go unnoticed on the pitch. It too is like a chess match with continuous motion. By far the most popular sport in the world bar none! |

I've played soccer for about 20 years (VISL), coached a few years, as well, and love it.
Favourite sport to play, but, for some reason, I can't stand watching it .

And your point is? Usually the most exciting games to watch in any sport are playoff games. I hate to tell you but hockey has quite a bit of non-exciting games played during the regular season as well. - CanUSA17
My point is baseball is boring - unless there is a championship on the line. Got it now? |

From my understanding, Corsi just gives you a general sense of a players 'general offensive skills'. Kind of like % of time spent in the offensive zone in football. Naturally it's different because it revolves around shots, but it can be useful to look at the pressure a player creates in an opposing teams zone.
That said, it's hockey...corsi don't mean jack if it doesn't lead to goals.
And Carter would be a disaster. |

Ya. I can't stand baseball and football cause of the stop-start nature of them. I understand everything but for some reason it doesn't do it for me. Much prefer, hockey, basketball, rugby, soccer, etc.
But no hate for players who enjoy those sports. For some reason I've always enjoyed curling and figure skating, which is like watching paint dry for most. |

I still love watching the Euro and World cup matches. I'm an England fan. I actually was a soccer fan before hockey. People think I'm crazy when I say it takes more skill to be a star in soccer than it does hockey. It's just easy to overlook what these guys can do with their feet. I found it much easier to play hockey.
I'm only a sometimes soccer fan now but I use to hang with the soccer crowd at Varsity Stadium(Toronto) in the old Blizzard days and we were very well known...police hated us but the Blizzard players would all come to our section at the last home game every year to give us a bow. The stadium was pretty quiet without our songs and chants. We had some huge brawls during the international games... The old crew still hangs out at the same pub(the duke of gloucester).
The Whitecaps entering MLS have brought me back round again. I do find it hard to see the diving these days but I don't consider soccer anything like hockey so it's not a big deal for me. The countries that speak Portugese dive the most imo. Their fans also fought like a bunch of pu$$ies when Benfica came to Toronto. It was a close call getting out of there alive none the less.... there was rarely over 150 of us and you may as well of called it a home game for Benfica. All of Kensington Market was there. |
