then why trade? you're contradicting yourself. - flyers20032002
Because guaranteeing you have an unstoppable one two punch on your top line for years to come is invaluable to the continued growth of a hockey team. |

Too early to give up on JvR being that guy. So you want to add a forward before a defenseman even though we cant stop any team from scoring? I dont see the need for the winger when scoring hasnt been the issue. We have different opinions I guess and theres nothing wrong in that. - stveshdy
The only way i trade JVR is for a good Dman but i dont see that happening .. so many young guns at a low cap hit could pay off huge 2 years down the road |

Any chance they wait until the off-season and possibly try to make a move on Suter because I agree that carle will walk. - flyers20032002
I think if Suter is indeed available, they will be players in that market.

Getting a scoring winger to play with Giroux is not high priorty as of today. The Flyers should be looking for help on defense. I dont disagree with getting a scoring winger but that is something I would go after once my defense is sured up. - stveshdy
I agree. I also think that one of JVR, Read, Schenn, or even Voracek could become that winger, and at a much more reasonable cost than mortgaging the future to sign a guy like Nash. None of those guys may develop into the total package that Nash is today, but they also won't cost nearly as much and we'll still be able to pay the rest of the team.
I like Nash. I think he is a great player (and overall better than Gaborik, fwiw). If he was more affordable I'd love him on the Flyers. But he's not, and players of his caliber never are, and for that reason I don't think I'd try to acquire him if I was Holmgren. Between the cap hit, and the assets that we'd almost certainly have to give up for him, I don't think it's the right move for this team at this time. |

You build a team up the middle. Goaltending, defense, Center. Wingers are the least important position on the ice. The Flyers have a number of very good young Wingers. They need to focus on building the defense up. |

I couldn't disagree more. This team has a wealth of talent at the forward position. With the age of Timonen, the age of Pronger, and his health in question. Carle potentially leaving as a UFA. And the lack of top prospects at the defensive position. As well as the biggest current need being a need for help on the backend. The defense is clearly where the priority is. That's a no brainer. - MJL
I don't see how anyone can 't (edit) say that defense is the team's first priority. With the Flyers ranking near the top in offense, and the balanced scoring that team enjoys, offense should be an afterthought. This team NEEDS to find a long-term solution at a 1-2 defenseman. |

Agreed. I don;t want to trade JvR unless I'm getting a very good young defenseman that projects to being a top pair guy |

Nothing is guaranteed. See Pronger, Chris. Or Gomez, Scott. Or any number of other high profile moves that have not gone as expected.
Nash is a top end talent. No doubt. But imo he is not what's best for this team right now.
Patience is what's best for this team right now. |

I'd throw him in a deal for Suter if an extension was signed before-hand. |

How many years do you think Carle and the Flyers would each be seeking at the negotiating table? |

This word is not the organization's vocabulary, I find it hard to believe we will just see some minor move before the deadline. Not saying it is right, but it is always gas pedal to the floor.

Very hard to say. If I was Carle, I'd be looking for stability at a fair price, and I'd say the Flyers the same. So I would say 5 years to guess.

I wouldn't. Why bother? He's going to be a UFA in July. Why trade an asset for him? |

No guarantee you get him in the UFA market and you might be able to get him for a better price on the extension end as well. You also address the need this year, so I think it might be worth it if the numbers lined up. |

It certainly has been in the past. But I'm hoping the trades of Richards and Carter this past summer are a sign that the organization is changing its strategy and will not turn around and squander the picks and prospects they just acquired just to make an ill advised splash at the deadline. |

It also leaves Suter with the an advantage at the negotiating table. The Flyers would already have given up assets for him, they're more or less all in on getting a contract done at any terms. |

There doesn't need to be a bidding war. You just gave up a big piece to trade for him. He becomes a UFA on July 1. Who holds the leverage? He can name his price. I'd say give me 7.5M a year or I walk. The Flyers are in a position to have to do the deal, or give up what they traded for him for nothing. How is that a good negotiating position? In Free Agency you can say no thanks to his demands and lose nothing. |

I am saying he already signs the extension and then the trade happens, if the numbers make sense I think it would definitely be worth it as the Flyers would have him for the rest of this year.
